The post person entered my house.

I've just seen it on my Ring doorbell.

17yr old DD had left the door unlocked for her friend so she didn't have to come down to let them in. Not uncommon.

Post arrived, including a parcel, during this time. When no one answered the door, the post person tried the handle, opened up the door and came into my home.

Granted, DD shouldn't have left the door unlocked, but it doesn't make what the post person did ok.

Just me who thinks it was completely unreasonable for them to have even tried the handle?!

Ah tbf I'm not thinking of legalities, just whats the done thing. Can't imagine postie would feel good in that situation either.

Maybe it's just different norms? It's genuinely just not the done thing in the area I live to have a delivery driver or postie open your door 😱 I'm really surprised when I read about this on MN.

Yeah, it happens all the time here, it's really common for people to have a double door system, so the front door (to the street) is left unlocked, and then you have an internal (locked) door just after it to secure your house.

Ultimately though, as the home owner, you're the one with the control over whether your door is locked or not, not your postie.

I don't want people coming into my house so I lock my door.

Yippiddy · 30/06/2024 18:25

It wouldn't bother me. He won't have come in he will have just popped the parcel in.

Kelly51 · 30/06/2024 18:25

Despite being asked repeatedly OP continues to evade the question; did the postie actually step in or just open door and chuck parcel in?
Could that be because she has realised she's being an arse?

She's 17 ffs!

Do people seriously lock their doors during the day when they are at home??

Yes, of course. Our front door just locks behind us. My parents were broken into while they were sleeping because they forgot to lock their door.

I do have the back door open for the dog in the summer, but if I was going upstairs for any extended period then yes, I'd lock that door too.

Trying the handle (and there’s a ring camera), instant loss of job. I’m not sure i believe this sorry!

It's quite normal to leave in doorways, porches and on the step!

diddl · 30/06/2024 18:28

I don't but it can't be opened from the outside without a key.

So, yes.

A door that can't be opened without a key is locked.

VeryStressedMum · 30/06/2024 18:30

A delivery driver tried our door but it was locked. I had never had that before so I was surprised.
Would I mind? Not really if they just left the package I probably wouldn't care that much but I have two dogs that are in the house and when one hears the deliveries he goes nuts he does not like people knocking and it's dangerous for him and the delivery person (he is a small dog).
So no I would not be happy

DerekFaker · 30/06/2024 18:31

MasterBeth · 30/06/2024 18:23

Yes. Of course. Why wouldn't you?

Because I don't see the need. What do you think is going to happen?

Mrsknowitall · 30/06/2024 18:35

I’m baffled at the responses on here and the amount of people that wouldn’t mind them just walking into their home, say the op daughter had been in the shower so didn’t hear the door and came down just wrapped in a towel just as he was coming in! I’m with you op i would be fuming too and tbh i would put a complaint in, i would rather a trip to the depot them have a stranger walk in my home.

DerekFaker · 30/06/2024 18:31

What happened to my parents - two men entered their home while they were upstairs, stole mum's handbag, all her bank cards and the car keys, plus the car off the drive.

This was in a safe, chocolate box town in Cumbria, so hardly a crime hotspot.

Would you rather he'd left the parcel outside or taken it back to the depot and left you a re-delivery card? He was being helpful. Say thanks next time you see him. He did not come into the house ffs.

DerekFaker · 30/06/2024 18:31

Probably nothing. But possibly someone coming in and stealing something.

It only has to happen once.

Why risk it?

Well not exactly as I can open it from the inside.

I expect Op would rather he had left it in the place requested it be left when no one answers the door.

I should hope you can.

Wontletmeusemynormalname · 30/06/2024 18:42

Our safe location is the workshop to the side of the house which has £1000s worth of tools. Every single parcel is left in the porch. I don't have a neighbour so I'm thankful.

The only one that actually rings the bell is a new evri driver because he has a dog phobia, if the dog is in the garden he will call us from the van. If we're not around we just tell him to drop it at the front gate (and remind him to close it)

Hankunamatata · 30/06/2024 18:43

Did they actually enter your house? Or open the door, put parcel in and close the door whole standing on doorstep?

Threeboysadogacatandakitten · 30/06/2024 18:45

That’s quite normal here. I’ve only started locking the front door these last few weeks as my indoor cats now have the run of the house and I’m worried they will escape if anyone opens the door. We have put a bin out with a note to put parcels in there.

No, sorry I don't think this is OK. You don't enter anyone's house without being asked.

Are you a vampire?

Just asking.
