Tea and fags, very British. 80 years on and we still put the kettle on in times of trouble. I wish we could all go put the kettle on and support one another.

I don't drink tea - or smoke. Is it really that British?

Nor do I but yes it’s definitely a British thing in my area.

I’ve never been called a bot and I’m not sure if I’m offended or impressed with myself 😂
Everyone is different, everyone has wants and needs that are not the same as others.
I like debate, I don’t like people trying to suppress other people’s opinions and branding others racist/bigoted etc.
If someone is genuinely being racist then it’s absolutely not ok and should be dealt with because it is an actual crime.
Branding all Reform voters as racist is really not okay. In my own opinion, it takes away the seriousness of what racism actually is.

I haven’t called anyone on here racist. But Farage is racist adjacent if not directly racist. See above excerpt from Hope not Hate. Look up what he’s said if you want to know for sure.

TinklySnail · 30/06/2024 21:33

@Weenus
It’s a tad strong for my tastebuds. I drink tea if there’s no decent coffee but I like mine milky and lukewarm 😬

TheHateIsNotGood · 30/06/2024 21:33

Watch out Weenus as there will be another irony-challenged poster who'll point out the bleeding obvious about where Yorks Tea comes from.

TheNoonBell · 30/06/2024 21:34

rainingsnoring · 30/06/2024 21:16

This is a very foolish post on several levels.
Do you really think that, over the years/ decades that Hitler and the Nazi party were gradually gaining power in post WW1 Germany, that they had an 'evil' sticker on them so that normal folk knew to avoid them? Of course not, they promised change, better times and Nationalism in a country which was struggling from great economic hardship. Does this sound at all familiar? I'm not suggesting that Farage intends to murder millions of Jews but there are certainly some parallels in terms of the messaging and politics.

An interesting factoid:

The British Union of Fascists leader was an MP for both Conservative and Labour prior to his foray into fascism.

TizerorFizz · 30/06/2024 21:35

So many tea estates in Yorkshire. The hills are covered with them!

That’s not going to happen. The vote was put to the people, and the people voted to leave. Why bother having a referendum if you can just keep challenging til you get what you want??

The people voted in too. By that logic, we shouldn’t have had the Brexit referendum at all. Best reverse it all immediately.

The tea yes.

In WW2 a huge proportion of the world’s tea was being shipped to Britain just to keep them in the war. If tea was rationed the British public would start to think the war was going badly and the government would lose support. They could cope with everything else being rationed but tea would have been a step too far.

Which is an interesting lesson on manipulation I think and perhaps one the two main parties could learn from if they want to reduce support for reform.

TheHateIsNotGood · 30/06/2024 21:42

@TinklySnail yes be impressed with yourself for being branded as a bot, a Russian one to add a bit of kudos too. If it was a Judo competition it's like getting an Ippon instead of just a Waza-ari for general insults such as racist, thick, lacking in critical skills, etc

justasking111 · 30/06/2024 21:44

Amused that anyone thinks Mumsnet important enough for bots to try and influence a sack of fighting ferrets 😂😂

I only really like Lady Grey... <slinks away>
And I have never smoked.

That is interesting. I don’t think people really understood the horrors of going down that route. Or I hope they didn’t. Looking back it’s clear that the signs were there but its a slow creep.

cardibach · 30/06/2024 21:47

Trouble is, @TinklySnail , enough reform candidates and members have shown themselves to be racist that at this point anyone still voting for them at best doesn’t care about racism.

Another mind blower, is that all of the Italian creators of fascism were former professional communists or socialists.

Goldenbear · 30/06/2024 21:49

Or alternatively, go and ‘read’, literally read and you will find all you need to know.

Horseshoe theory, innit.

TheHateIsNotGood · 30/06/2024 21:51

I'm a double espresso with a couple of rollies kind of person, me. And I also do love a cup of tea too. Also with fags. Rollies mind, not those sawdust filled ready made stuffed fall of salt petre to kill me quicker cigs.

Fighting ferrets 😂 Love the image that gives me.

I think Russia are trying to influence things in lots of ways and on lots of forums. I’m not certain that there are bots on here, but some posters seem to be very extreme and deliberately goady. They could just be dreadful people of course. Who knows.

I just think we all need to be aware that every time we all end up in these ferret fights then it’s a point to Putin and his plan to create division, unrest and to destabilise us. And every time we read something goady, extreme, emotionally triggering, too good or bad to be true, we should fact check it.

Silviasilvertoes · 30/06/2024 21:51

From the Independent this evening: Reform candidate defects to Tories as there is a “significant moral issue” within Reform.

“In a small crumb of good news for Mr Sunak, however, the Reform candidate in Erewash, Liam Booth-Isherwood defected to back the Conservatives. “Whilst I have campaigned alongside many decent, honest and hardworking people during the course of the General Election campaign in Erewash, the reports of widespread racism and sexism in Reform have made clear that there is a significant moral issue within certain elements of the party,” he said.”

Fungkew · 30/06/2024 21:52

No, you are not unreasonable. You don’t see many red squirrels these days…

Extremes at either ends of the political
spectrum are unhelpful at best, dangerous at worst.

I can’t argue that some don’t care about racism, but I feel that that isn’t exclusive to Reform.
I do think that currently Reform is giving racists a platform. I’m pleased to see that Reform are not standing for it.
