There's so much shit everywhere

There are so many feral horrible dogs pissing on front doors or prams or shop displays and barking terrifyingly at kids

I am sick of them!!!!! Is this it or will people learn their post COVID lesson and only get pets they can actually handle in the future?

It seems to be an attachment problem English people have. Perhaps English people just don't have the social skills to get on with other humans properly?
LOL.
I've just an immensely social morning, entirely unconnected from dogs. As has DH, separately from me.

Yeah, but obvs a lack of social skills is endemic amongst the English and no one else.

sunglassesonthetable · 25/07/2024 15:09

*Only because they breed on the streets due to lack of neutering.

England has just as many, if not more, unwanted dogs by the way. We just put them in 'animal centres' for months/years instead.

England is not a nation of animal lovers. Just animal hoarders and wanters.*

oh my god where do you even get your statistics?!!!

What rubbish.

what's so interesting is that this thread consists of anti dog posters accusing dog owners of all these social failings yet coming out with hysterical illogical nonsense themselves.

It's totally fine to hate or not like dogs, not want them around etc but please don't just chuck out nonsense.

RedPony1 · 25/07/2024 15:09

This thread is hilarious!! The vile unrealistic statements of people that can't comprehend love & life outside of humans is laughable.

I don't know anybody at work or in my large social circle that doesn't have at least one dog. We pick up our 3rd dog in 11 days time and it will slot in to our very busy super social life just like the others and have a great life walking the farm and coming out in the horse lorry with us 😁

Look up some actual real numbers on dog ownership etc throughout Europe.

Gosh, I must have mistaken the 100’s of dogs on leads with owners in Paris, for pets. Silly me, I see how now that they were the feral dogs you refer to.

Don't need to thanks. It's my line of work.

The English are the biggest dog owners in Europe and also have the largest number of unwanted dogs housed in animal centres. There are more registered pet dogs per capita in England than anywhere else in the world bar the USA/South America.

In vast areas of the Europe there are hundreds of thousands of strays.

England has a problem with too many dogs, too many amateur breeders, too many people selling puppies in the friday ad, unfettered imports and stupid people getting dogs only to give them up as soon as they aren't puppies anymore.

It's pathetic and it needs a lid put on it.

Our parks and wild places are covered in the dog shit of 12 million dogs.

NRTFT · 25/07/2024 15:59

France has a horrific problem with abandoned dogs.

Over 100,000 per year and growing.

sunglassesonthetable · 25/07/2024 16:03

Don't need to thanks. It's my line of work.
Hmmm. But still chucking out these very odd 'facts '

The English are the biggest dog owners in Europe

Do you mean the tallest ? Because that's not true. There's much higher % of dog ownership in some other European countries.

and also have the largest number of unwanted dogs housed in animal centres.

Great. Would you prefer them as strays or roaming around eg Romania?

There are more registered pet dogs per capita in England than anywhere else in the world bar the USA/South America.

Glad you're taking a look at google though.

In vast areas of the Europe there are hundreds of thousands of strays.

Agree.

But you don't like refuges. Dog hoarding '

Agree.

sunglassesonthetable · 25/07/2024 16:06

We all know there are many stray dogs on the continent 🙄

Don't really see what your 'gotcha' is there tbh ?

This is a thread talking about pet dogs. Pet dogs you inferred are only a “problem” in England. I pointed out I saw many pet dogs in Paris, which not in England. Not a single stray, though I’ll take your word for it that they exist.

Yes, there are feral dogs on the continent. There are also many, many millions of pet dogs.

There's nothing odd about these facts

The English are the biggest dog owners in Europe

Do you mean the tallest ? Because that's not true. There's much higher % of dog ownership in some other European countries.

There are 12 million dogs in Britain. Germany have the second biggest dog population at 10 million.

and also have the largest number of unwanted dogs housed in animal centres.

Great. Would you prefer them as strays or roaming around eg Romania?

Nope. But it shows we have a glut of dogs and no-one wants them. Therefore - 'too many dogs'.

There are more registered pet dogs per capita in England than anywhere else in the world bar the USA/South America.

Glad you're taking a look at google though.

I don't nned google to know that - it's been that way for many, many, many years.

In vast areas of the Europe there are hundreds of thousands of strays.

Agree.

But you don't like refuges. Dog hoarding '

Just pointing out that we have exactly the same problems of too many unwanted dogs and of abandonment, if not worse - yet ours is hidden from public view as we put dogs in little cells out of the way rather than letting them roam.

England has a problem with too many dogs, too many amateur breeders, too many people selling puppies in the friday ad, unfettered imports and stupid people getting dogs only to give them up as soon as they aren't puppies anymore.

Agree.

At least we agree on this. That's a start.

Yes, there are feral dogs on the continent. There are also many, many millions of pet dogs.

Most abandoned dogs were once pets dogs or were the product of unneutered once pet dogs.

So pet dogs is still the cause of the problem.

It's still about people wanting dogs - then not wanting them.

sunglassesonthetable · 25/07/2024 16:23

More than these 100,000 etc stray dogs in say France?

The entirety of Europe?

What did you say your job was again?

Bewareofthisonetoo · 25/07/2024 16:23

OonaStubbs · 10/07/2024 21:35

Bring back the dog license and make it strict.

Inspectors should inspect your home before a licence is granted to make sure it is suitable for a dog.

Only a certain number of licenses should be granted within each area.

Excellent plan!

Both you and @ICanNeverRememberPasswords are missing the point that people go out with their dogs who would otherwise not get the exercise: their obligation to walk the dog gets them out whatever the weather. They meet people out walking and strike up friendships. For people who live alone, a dog can provide company.

If you don't like dogs, you're going to struggle to understand how much a well-trained and happy dog can enrich your life.

I must remember to tell that to my friend's mum, who was an active lady in her late seventies until she was knocked over by an off-lead dog, broke her hip and now barely goes out at all.

sunglassesonthetable · 25/07/2024 16:52

*Most abandoned dogs were once pets dogs or were the product of unneutered once pet dogs.

Or political regimes - see Romania
But don't let facts get in the way of an argument.

It's still about people wanting dogs - then not wanting them.

What is? Stray dogs ( how many generations would you go back on that one ? Since dogs have been owned for 1,000 s of years.

Dogs in refuges - yes

People abandoning dogs is another symptom of irresponsible owners. Always the issue.

I said 100,000 plus pets abandoned in France each year at the moment since covid.
A major proportion of these are dogs, pretty much on a par with the 100,000 plus dogs in animal centres in UK.

There are too many dogs. It's clear. I'm not sure how anyone can argue with that.

There is an excess of dogs, as the OP says, and something needs to change.
