Is this supposed to happen this often at nursery?!

I admit I am a bit of a clean freak. If Dd ever soils her vests I throw them out rather than wash them. She is now 20 months and ar nursery the last 6 months. Once or twice a week without fail I am given a plastic bag with her vest and trousers in, which have got a tinge of poo on the seams or at the back of the nappy. When I’m with her I change her as soon as possible/immediately and I wonder if they are not changing her frequently or something? Is this just normal nursery stuff?

In my experience, normal and yes happens frequently. You need to stop throwing them out and wash them. They'll be fine honestly.

Smartish · 27/06/2024 21:03

Just wash them, why on earth would you throw them out????? So wasteful.

RockAndRollerskate · 27/06/2024 21:03

Normal in my experience. I definitely wouldn’t throw them away though, just rinse and wash.

I gave up on vests long before most people… are they tight on her and pushing the nappy out of place while she runs about?

Misthios · 27/06/2024 21:04

How wasteful. Have you never heard of washing powder and stain remover?

todlermim · 27/06/2024 21:05

So this happens often at nursery?!

I just find it crazy as this has happened maybe four times since she was born when I’ve been with her!!!

At 20 months your child will be 1 of 3 or 4 children looked after by 1 adult. No, they cannot change them immediately as they have more than 1 child that they are responsible for. Normally it’s every 2 hours or so they change a nappy instead of as and when a child has soiled them.

Wash the vests. They will be fine, especially if you put some vanish or something in with them. Otherwise you’re basically throwing money away!

Poplarmoth · 27/06/2024 21:07

That is so wasteful it’s actually made me feel angry.

No it just happens "often"
Nothing to do with nursery or who is caring for her. Or even how soon the nappy is changed.
Usually a combination of the nappy fit and the vest fit.
A certain size of nappy can fit perfectly one week and leak the next.

todlermim · 27/06/2024 21:08

I realise people do different things regarding washing.

My question was just whether this was common with nursery but it seems it is. Thanks

@FTPM1980 it’s genuinely happened rarely with me! That was why I was wondering

You can't possibly think it's normal practise in nurseries to let a child sit in a soiled nappy until it's change time?

In my experience they change as soon as possible soiled rather than wet....but that doesn't mean immediately. It may mean 5-10 minutes or a bit more.
At 20 months she will be moving around a lot more than 6 months ago.

Caterpillarshoes · 27/06/2024 21:10

Wash the vests and watch the documentary on cotton production and its impact before you bin more clothes.

NuffSaidSam · 27/06/2024 21:11

OP if it happens very rarely with you and very frequently at nursery then they're not changing her enough. Or they're not changing her well enough and letting it spill onto the clothes.

This is not something that happens at all nurseries! I can't believe the number of people telling you it is (and I'm normally the anti-nursery voice!).

todlermim · 27/06/2024 21:13

@NuffSaidSam has this ever happened with your nursery? I was really surprised when it happened the first time but I am quite OCD with cleaning and thought maybe I was being over the top

Do they provide different nappies to what you use at home that don’t suit her as much, hence the leaks you don’t have at home?

Just to clarify I work in a nursery you are correct that the ratio is one adult to three children, however as soon as we realise one of the children has a soiled nappy we check them all until we find it and it is changed immediately not every 2 hours

YellowHairband · 27/06/2024 21:16

I'm surprised people are saying it's normal to be this frequent. I've had two DDs at nursery and this has only happened a handful of times in total.

However I agree that it's absolutely ridiculous to throw the clothes away. So so wasteful.

Springadorable · 27/06/2024 21:16

If she has been in a poo nappy for any length of time it would be more than a tiny bit of staining at the edge of a vest.

wishuponastar1988 · 27/06/2024 21:16

Why not ask them? If I've ever had a problem or question I have spoken to them. Once when I picked my baby up (she was about 11 months), she was wet as were her leggings as her nappy was full. I raised it with the staff and asked if they could change her more frequently as she does fill nappies quickly and they obliged. Not had an issue since. There's been a couple of times she's had a nappy explosion but to be honest I don't inspect her clothes when they return home, they go straight in the wash as they are usually covered with all sorts!

BloodyAdultDC · 27/06/2024 21:17

My DC didn't go to nursery but I reckon we had one poonami a week on average, with leaks frequently, many many times poo worked it's way up her back into her hair.

We also did a good stint of washable nappies (some of which I still use as cleaning cloths 15 years later), perfectly fine after a soak and hot wash rather than replacing vests every time. That's the disgraceful part of this post op.

LizzieSiddal · 27/06/2024 21:20

This is not true. If a child has pooed they should be changed as soon as possible. Leaving a baby in a soiled nappy for two hours would be deemed as against safeguarding.

OhHelloMiss · 27/06/2024 21:20

Wait til she comes home with worms and nits!

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 27/06/2024 21:20

If it makes you feel better re the cleanliness then get some Napisan to bung in with used clothes. It's worth finding a solution you're comfortable with because once she's out of nappies, particularly once she's wiping herself, you're going to be dealing with bits of poo on clothing an awful lot.

Mumoftwo1316 · 27/06/2024 21:25

It happens often, not just at nursery.

If it happens more at nursery, it could be because the nappies there fit differently as a pp said, or she's more active there, or she eats more fruit there so the poo is looser.

In any case, I'm also horrified you don't wash them. Use dettol and wear gloves if you're that worried about germs.
