Is this supposed to happen this often at nursery?!

I admit I am a bit of a clean freak. If Dd ever soils her vests I throw them out rather than wash them. She is now 20 months and ar nursery the last 6 months. Once or twice a week without fail I am given a plastic bag with her vest and trousers in, which have got a tinge of poo on the seams or at the back of the nappy. When I’m with her I change her as soon as possible/immediately and I wonder if they are not changing her frequently or something? Is this just normal nursery stuff?

@todlermim this never happened in our nursery. Dd is potty trained now (2y4m) but in the year and 4m she was in nappies I haven’t had a single soiled vest or clothing. I don’t expect blowouts at this age as bowel motions are more solid.
i therefore would think the nappy isn’t fitting well or being put on well. If you don’t already try pull on nappies.
is it always the same area stained- this would suggest fitting issue.

ObliviousCoalmine · 27/06/2024 23:18

Oh my god grow up and wash the vests. Christ alive.

I realise people do different things regarding washing.

My question was just whether this was common with nursery but it seems it is. Thanks

Yeah most people don't bin perfectly good clothes because they need washing

Sleepy86 · 27/06/2024 23:30

Christ on a bike! Both my kids were experts at poonamis! If id thrown our every soiled item of clothing I've seen over the years I'd need to remortgage my house to buy more! This is incredibly wasteful OP! Chuck some napisan in with the detergent, stick it on a hot wash and it'll be good as new afterwards.

Also in terms of nursery the staff aren't always able to change nappies immediately. What if they're all outside playing in the garden when one poos for example, the fresh air takes the smell away so it's not caught immediately, then they need to make sure there are enough staff available to watch the remaining children whilst yours is taken inside to be changed as they can't just abandon the other kids. I do think you're being a little over critical here

skinnyoptionsonly · 27/06/2024 23:37

Do you have an OCD diagnosis OP?

You mention being a bit OVD about cleanliness.

Seriously you've got to stop throwing things out. What will you do at potty training. 😱

todlermim · 27/06/2024 22:31

? Obviously poo is very difficult to a food stain!

Nope not very different at all! Wash at 60 with non bio and it’s a clean stain, hang it out in the sun/rain it’ll vanish in a few hours. How do you think people manage cloth nappies? How on earth did humans survive for thousands of years without dying from the poo before disposables were invented? More money than sense you have, so disgustingly wasteful!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 27/06/2024 23:40

It's normal. Just wash them.

AnonSoc · 27/06/2024 23:54

I never found Napisan to work that well. (For context, we used reusable nappies for DS for over 2 years, so we had a lot of poo stains to deal with). Leaving something in a bucket for a few hours to soak with Vanish Oxi action was by far the best solution.

Crazycatlady79 · 28/06/2024 00:02

Do you actually have OCD?

user2037272727273 · 28/06/2024 00:17

I wouldn't say this is normal no, I work in a nursery. As soon as we get a whiff we go and check all our little ones in nappies (we only take from age 2 up) on a very rare occasion it may have leaked as it was left longer than normal but think monthly (per all children there) rather than weekly for just one child. They are also moving around a lot more at nursery and obviously it's not 1 on 1 so it can happen.

todlermim · 28/06/2024 07:14

I have a recognised condition and I receive ongoing treatment. I can’t actually believe the nasty posts on here. Just goes to show the ignorance around mental health still.

Someone mentioned not using the press stud vests is that right? By this age should she not be in those?

In fairness, OP, the term you used previously was "I am quite OCD" which is a) not a clinical description, and b) tends to be the language used in contexts where people are, as you say, demonstrating ignorance of mental health issues. I think other posters were mainly questioning whether the latter was in play rather than suggesting that anyone with a mental health condition isn't deserving of treatment and support, and had you led by more clearly mentioning that you have a relevant mental health diagnosis, this inadvertent impression might not have been created. I don't think anyone had ill intentions in their responses, I actually think everyone was just arguing for the same thing you are here.

In my experience, relevant therapies around OCD would generally be seeking to move away from behaviours like throwing away clothing perceived as contaminated, so if you're not already working on this as part of your treatment then it may be worth bringing up with the professionals you're working with.

Zanatdy · 28/06/2024 08:08

Yes this is perfectly normal. When you’re with her she’s the only child, at nursery she’s not and they don’t notice immediately. You’re being incredibly wasteful throwing them in the bin, really is no need

Just use normal vest now, and that will solve the issue

daffodilandtulip · 28/06/2024 08:22

It's not that it's common with nursery, it's that it's common with babies who poo and wear vests...

Iaskedyouthrice · 28/06/2024 08:24

Be reassured @todlermim that this is normal both at home and nursery. They won't get to her as soon as she's done a poo every single time. She'll be running, sitting, playing. Even if it's only 5 minutes it gives the poo chance to escape!
You will know when she's done something and if it's just you and her you can deal with it immediately. Not the case in nursery. My dd used to go and hide in the quiet corner to do her business 🤢 then just go about her day till one of the nursery nurses caught a whiff or it was indeed changing time. Not their fault at all.

todlermim · 27/06/2024 21:13

@NuffSaidSam has this ever happened with your nursery? I was really surprised when it happened the first time but I am quite OCD with cleaning and thought maybe I was being over the top

OCD is a diagnosed condition, PLEASE do not say you are 'quite OCD' if you don't experience the intrusive thought and debilitating brain power of real OCD.

And anyway, your kid is 20 months old, moving about, playing in nursery, of course she will have more soiling as the nappy moved about. Maybe you are the one who needs a new size of nappy.

And stop throwing things out! When you start potty training there will be more accidents, will you throw all clothes away?

Nappisan in a bucket super concentrated before the wash for a few hours and all was as good as new

TinyTear · 28/06/2024 08:30

@todlermim i see you mentioned you are diagnosed so apologies, but a lot of people do throw around 'im a bit OCD' when they just like a clean house...

WitchyWay · 28/06/2024 08:33

:( you need to start taking a bit more responsibility for our environment. Throwing clothes away because they have a streak of poo?!

If you want 1:1 care you'll need to look after you daughter at home yourself. Your daughter is fine, they all have the odd accident or leakage. You need to start relaxing and using the washing machine.

It’s good you realise you could be overreacting and I’d suggest you absolutely are. Children do need a level of exposure to bacteria & viruses, that how they build their natural immunity.

Hankunamatata · 28/06/2024 09:28

Your dc is possibly more active at nursery. Climbing, sitting, toddling about - all more likely to cause leaks.

Just wash the clothes. I used cloth nappies and sold them on after 3 children and they are still being used. Better than 1000s years in a landfill

LittleMG · 28/06/2024 09:39

OCD is a serious mental illness please don’t use this it in this context. I’m not trying to be pedantic but it’s really unhelpful to people who are actually ill with it.

OP didn’t say diagnosed with OCD though. ‘A recognised condition’ is the actual wording.
