Anyone else wobbling about voting Labour?

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 27/06/2024 17:39

I desperately want to GTTO but the last few years have taught me that ‘any change’ isn’t always good and things can get worse, even if you think they can’t.

I’ve watched all the debates now and Starmer is so… wet. I don’t like him. The first thing he did when women’s rights were mentioned his first thought was men who ‘identify as women’ and how ‘marginalised’ they are. When asked about immigration he squirmed and squirmed before muttering about his role as DPP (who cares? We want to know what you plan to do NOW). When asked about his support for Corbyn he said ‘but I didn’t think we would actually win..’

There’s something about him which is making me very uncomfortable and I just have a bad feeling now about what would happen if he was leader.

Anyone else? If you’re not voting Tory or Labour, who are you voting for and why? I assumed I would vote Labour this time but my gut is suddenly screaming at me not to!

Look at the sheer level of corruption by the Conservative government? How can you possibly be thinking of voting for them again? Millions given to mates firms. Various Ministers and Prime Minister breaking the law. Ministers and Prime Ministers openly lying to the public.
Truthfully I think anyone who would vote for the Conservatives again has no self respect.
This is not like the old Conservative party. I live in an area that had one of the old guard Tory MPs who was well respected. He has openly criticised how the Conservative governments have acted in recent years. If this election was between the old style Conservative government and Labour I would agree with you OP. But how can you vote for this lot!!!

I'd like to see the libdems as the official opposition as it "may" just make the Commons and particularly PMQT more professional. I can't imagine Starmer and Davey acting like complete idiots against eachother with the usual stupid jibes that we've come to expect after Blair, Cameron, Boris, Milliband, Corbyn and especially Sunak. Time for an end to all that nonsense and I think a combo of Starmer and Davey could actually be the catalyst.

I'd like to see a coalition opposition.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:14

@IAmTheQuarry Starmer is a top lawyer. Yes he can not perform as an actor or TV personality would. I honestly do not care.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:15

@taxguru I too would like the LibDems to be the official opposition. I want competent people behaving like adults in the workplace.

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 27/06/2024 19:08

Well, yes. There are a small core of Labour supporters who are frankly demented to the extent they believe anybody who doesn’t say Labour are perfect and wonderful, is a bot.

I'm not a Labour supporter. I'm just person who's tired of the Tories pissing on my head and telling me it's raining. And that goes for their supporters who post disingenuously about having no one else to vote for.🙄🤷‍♀️

Yes. He has had proper jobs outside of politics. This is much more important than what his media image is.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:19

@TooBigForMyBoots I totally totally agree!!

Another76543 · 27/06/2024 19:19

Whilst things are far from good right now, the fear is that they could get worse. Starmer is just a figurehead. It’s other senior figures in the Labour Party which concern me. I really don’t like the divisions Labour seem to create.

runningonberocca · 27/06/2024 19:20

Always been a Labour voter but absolutely cannot bring myself to support them now. Keir Starmer is not fit for the post as Labour leader. He has no clear plans or policies. He has been extremely weak in his response to the situation in Gaza being more vocal about some cornflour at Stonehenge rather than the deaths of thousands of children. ( not that I agree with the JSO shenanigans at Stonehenge). He is afraid to say anything controversial re trans rights for fear of backlash and in doing so utterly disrespecting the rights and safety of biological women.
In short - I don’t trust a word out of his mouth. I’m voting for our local independent candidate

They are the only party prepared to stand up for women that is why.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:21

@NetballHoop I just think if he is a top lawyer, he should be good at lobbying for UK interests with other countries.
I know Boris Johnson was a big personality that lots of people loved, but he was a laughing stock amongst other countries Prime Ministers and top officials.

Fantapops · 27/06/2024 19:21

Lib Dems here. Would be voting Greens if they were an option. The new Labour is not for me.

runningonberocca · 27/06/2024 19:21

NetballHoop · 27/06/2024 19:19

Yes. He has had proper jobs outside of politics. This is much more important than what his media image is.

I would expect a barrister to be clear and concise in his arguments and to be able to put his point across unambiguously. Keir has not been able to do so

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:22

@Hummingbird75 fine vote for a bunch of corrupt people who have stolen millions from taxpayers. Truthfully I think some of them should be in prison, not the Houses of Parliament.

Fantapops · 27/06/2024 19:22

For me it's not even about Starmer, I just much prefer the LD manifesto.

TheChosenTwo · 27/06/2024 19:23

No wobbles here, perfectly happy with my decision.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:23

@runningonberocca Starmer is a top lawyer. You do not get there unless you can put across a good argument. That does not mean he is good at being on TV though.
I think of someone like John Major. Not good on TV but brilliant at negotiating with other countries and top people in the UK. Some people do not just come across on TV well.

ExtraOnions · 27/06/2024 19:24

The Conservative Party .. the great protector of women’s rights.

Apart from the record waiting lists for gynaecology services, closing of Sure Start centres, low rate of prosecution and convictions for sexual offences, the increase in zero hours contracts, the gender pay gap, unaffordable child care, the disproportionate effect of austerity on women, rise in violent crime against women etc etc etc

Women Rights cannot be boiled down to JUST being about Trans-Rights. If you are voting, because you are concerned about the effect of government policy on women, look at it holistically.

I have a daughter and her safety is threatened much more by the dire state of the NHS and Police Service.

It’s single issue politics that’s dangerous

bergamotorange · 27/06/2024 19:24

The fact is this election is a choice between Labour and the Tories. If you're happy with how things are, vote for the government. If not, vote for change.

More people than ever are considering tactical voting this time.

With FPTP you have to bear in mind what result would really disappoint you and vote with your head.

jeaux90 · 27/06/2024 19:25

Not voting for Labour I just can't. I say that as an ex LP member

runningonberocca · 27/06/2024 19:25

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:15

@taxguru I too would like the LibDems to be the official opposition. I want competent people behaving like adults in the workplace.

Unfortunately Ed Davey has jumped to bumbling Boris Johnson type tactics for his campaign. Oh look at me falling off a paddle board LOL!
We need some dignity and some gravitas and professionalism among those running the country

ChurchCats · 27/06/2024 19:25

I wouldn't worry-if Keir Starmer does as much as a year he'll be lucky.
Off he will pop and the hard left will take over.
Not that Keir is the cuddly option-he is a dangerous man and the reason he looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights when asked a simple question, is not because he is anxious (no-one with anxiety to that extent becomes a leading politician) but because he is always frightened of his real policies being discovered.

TheBlueQuail · 27/06/2024 19:25

Lots to think about here, I couldn't vote corbyn last time as he's an absolute fool, I really dislike Starmer, he's wet, no decent policies, wishy washy, ex solicitor/barrister so knows all the loopholes and rules and regulations...
I know Sunak has mucked up here and there but what other party ever could go through brexit, pandemic unheard of, 2 big wars etc... it's understandable to want something different to what we have because we need change, but no one is coming up with the goods because they can't do I think it has to be tory

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:26

@ExtraOnions they are just transphobic. There is no arguing with them, they are not interested. And they are not interested in woman's rights either. If they were they would be looking at the appalling rape conviction rate which has fallen during the Conservatives, the lack of refuge spaces for women being abused, the increase in women in prison for minor offences, and the rise in street prostitution due to the vast increase in poverty.

Hummingbird75 · 27/06/2024 19:26

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:22

@Hummingbird75 fine vote for a bunch of corrupt people who have stolen millions from taxpayers. Truthfully I think some of them should be in prison, not the Houses of Parliament.

I don't believe in the spin at all. If that was true we would see arrests and charges. I have never believed in the Labour nastiness. I am happy with the way the conservatives handled the pandemic and the furlough scheme, and cared for disabled and CEV people. Yes there were mistakes, but on the whole I feel the government do care and the conservatives are much softer than they used to be.

I have no qualms about putting my daughter's safety first and foremost in this election, and all future elections.
We fought to have our voices heard and it is all at risk again.
