Anyone else wobbling about voting Labour?

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 27/06/2024 17:39

I desperately want to GTTO but the last few years have taught me that ‘any change’ isn’t always good and things can get worse, even if you think they can’t.

I’ve watched all the debates now and Starmer is so… wet. I don’t like him. The first thing he did when women’s rights were mentioned his first thought was men who ‘identify as women’ and how ‘marginalised’ they are. When asked about immigration he squirmed and squirmed before muttering about his role as DPP (who cares? We want to know what you plan to do NOW). When asked about his support for Corbyn he said ‘but I didn’t think we would actually win..’

There’s something about him which is making me very uncomfortable and I just have a bad feeling now about what would happen if he was leader.

Anyone else? If you’re not voting Tory or Labour, who are you voting for and why? I assumed I would vote Labour this time but my gut is suddenly screaming at me not to!

Our local Tory MP is fab. I do think we are long overdue a change in government though which makes me reluctant to vote for them. I really don't like Labour at the moment though, they're not filling me with confidence that they will be a good alternative. I will probably end up voting for the Green Party or something..

Why don’t you like labour at the moment just out of interest ? When did you like
them ?

AngelinaFibres · 27/06/2024 18:44

HandsDown84 · 27/06/2024 18:07

I've already voted. Our MP has been in post for about 25 years and has no idea - he lives in a mansion with a gaggle of privately educated kids and all he talks about is saying "no" to an incinerator in one of the local towns. He normally has a majority of about 25k so he's in for a shock.

Are you North Herefordshire

awaynboilyurheid · 27/06/2024 18:44

Really op you have a “bad” feeling about Starmer ? well I have a nightmarish feeling if the same lot get in again that’s much worst!
Zero wobbles here.

Sookafatwan · 27/06/2024 18:45

Given his amazing career, Starmer should have been a real contender, but he's just morphed more and more into a wet lettuce. Can't fathom it. Blair turned out to be a shithouse but he had charisma in droves and 97 felt a heck of a lot more promising.

Hummingbird75 · 27/06/2024 18:45

I have daughters, so we will be voting to protect them with the conservatives, which is the only* *party prepared to prioritise women and girls. My dh is doing the same, and both sets of grandparents now. Fortunately we come from a caring family on both sides that wish to see our children protected in the future.

We have deep concerns about the economy as well.
How can anything improve if the economy fails.

GreenExpert · 27/06/2024 18:46

Completely agree, I'll probably just spoil my ballot. I think Starmer's a lying establishment stooge and the tories uselessness is well documented. The current Labour Party aren't offering anything in the way of hope or change

Maddy70 · 27/06/2024 17:53

No. A boring stable prime minister is exactly what's needed now. Im happy to vote labour this time

But he’s not boring and stable, he’s boring and slippery. He seems unable to give a straightforward answer to anything. The only times he seems passionate are when he’s talking about trans people or his father’s occupation.

I did a quiz online as for the first time I genuinely felt at a loss. It was quite a long detailed questionnaire. Turns out I am Reform or would have been UKIP which surprised me a bit. I thought I was fairly liberal - I'm not particularly tied to a party or have a 'never vote for X' mentality.

Anyway, I'll be voting Conservative. I live in a safe blue seat and I don't trust Labour at the moment. Better the devil you know.

frightenedmum1 · 27/06/2024 18:47

Nope , O Torybot!

AliTheMinx · 27/06/2024 18:47

I am very anti- Labour due to their Private School VAT policy, which may well force up to move our son from the school where he is thriving and so happy. We are not rich and make many sacrifices to send him there, and it breaks my heart to think this may be the end of his journey there. I watched the debate yesterday and Rishi and Keir were just awful. Both lacked integrity and were behaving like petulant children. I'm no fan of the Tories since David Cameron and will be voting Lib Dem this time. I feel their manifesto is by far the most sensible.

GreenExpert · 27/06/2024 18:47

People go an about Starmer being boring, I couldn't care less about that, I care about the fact that he's deeply untrustworthy

protectoroftherealm · 27/06/2024 18:47

I'll vote conservative or POW next week. Since we're voting for our local MP, there is not a prayer I will mark a cross next to Ed Millibands name, though this is futile as he will still do sweet FA for his constituents and Doncaster North will still be moving backwards by the time the next GE rolls around.

Hummingbird75 · 27/06/2024 18:48

The Labour Party is nothing like the party it used to be, that is the issue, the party genuinely cared about working people and people's rights in the past, that has been traded away for a woke agenda and virtue signalling. I am not sure who the Labour Party are now, and who they represent exactly. Maybe some parts of London and Wales. Not sure.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/06/2024 18:48

Why do you think creeps like David Tennant and various police forces-who define some rapists as women-are emboldened to come up with the shit they're already spouting. They know they're on the home run, that's why.

They've been doing it for years. I remember Surrey Police threatening a Labour councillor and other women for posts explaining that the sex offender they were crowing about getting locked up, was a man, not a woman, on their FB page. Suella Braverman also posted and didn't give a shit about the threats.

They are emboldened because Tory MPs reported women for hate speech for retweeting JKR. They are emboldened because of years of the Tory trans shitshow.Angry

Greenismyfav · 27/06/2024 18:48

Frosty1000 · 27/06/2024 18:40

It's worth remembering that those not voting labour because of the gender stuff that no other parties are going to fare much better. Tory party definitely won't protect women, green and lib dem even worse.

Anyway there's more to life than that.

We're very blue here, awful current MP, never around and has had a scandal or two historically and I cannot wait to vote Labour for the first time in my life to get rid of them! It'll be just like Christmas has come early.

I’ve had a good look down the list of candidates and their party’s stance on gender (which for me rules out Greens, SNP, Labour and Lib Dem’s) and those that I won’t vote for for other reasons (Scottish Family party, Reform, Tories) and I’m left with investigating the Indy candidates or spoiling my ballot.

It’s ludicrous.

CranfordScones · 27/06/2024 18:49

Labour's views on women - definitely no.
LibDems - no better.

Our (useless) encumbent Conservative is standing down and the new candidate actually looks like the best of the bunch.

The Tories don't deserve my vote - it feels like rewarding failure. But I don't think the country deserves a Starmer government.

I'll probably hold my nose and vote Tory.

RampantIvy · 27/06/2024 18:49

AngelicInnocent · 27/06/2024 17:46

As trickabrick said, look at your local candidates. I'm in a redwall area that has always been taken for granted. Last time the tories took it and the new mp has been excellent. He might just get in again as a result

I'm in a traditionally labour area and the conservatives got in last time because our labour MP decamped elsewhere and no-one knew anything about her replacement.

Our Tory MP has been useless. It is a rural area and she hasn't supported the farmers and she voted against free meals for FSM children during the holidays. All she did was brown nose Boris.

Our labour candidate seems to be doing a good job and I would be very surprised if she didn't win this time.

BeverForget · 27/06/2024 18:49

I am not convinced about their policy on gender and respecting women.
And they are going to rinse people for tax.

I won't vote Tory, but am tempted to sit this one out...

Mischance · 27/06/2024 18:50

In other words - only vote for someone who stands a chance of getting in or your vote might as well be flushed down the toilet. Follow the polls and work out who might stand a chance of getting in, and who you definitely don't want to win. Then vote accordingly.

A vote for the greens (with whom I have enormous sympathy) is a vote down the pan because they will not win in all but a handful of constituencies.

We have a first past the post voting system which means that voting for minority parties is a wasted vote.

As for the televised arguments - I have watched none of them. I do not want to select a party on the basis of how loud their leader can shout, or how many nasty digs they can get in - I look at the content of their proposed policies.

PickledMumion · 27/06/2024 18:50

It's particularly hard when you can't trust anything that is (or isn't!) written in the manifestos.

For example, the Tories have started a rumour that Labour want to introduce inheritance tax on farms, which would be catastrophic. Labour refuse to confirm or deny, but it almost wouldn't matter if they did deny it, because no one believes either side will actually stick to their promises anyway.

McTatt · 27/06/2024 18:52

Totally agree. SNP have shown themselves to be incompetent bullies but a vote for Labour is potentially a vote against women.

Erm the economy is failing currently….
Highest taxes in 70 years. Unemployment climbing. Tory manifesto declared to be cloud cuckoo land. Levelling up a failure and a lie. Corruption. Lying. Brexshite.
Ok so trans people will be put in their place but how on earth can you vote for more of the same….

Mooda · 27/06/2024 18:53

Labour are a little frustrating and uninspiring but 10 seconds thinking about how I'd feel about waking up on 5 July to another 5 years of this appalling self serving government and the terrible harm they've caused is enough to be good to go with my vote for Labour.

Also - I work in local government for a council that was historically Tory but has been Labour in recent years. The shift in focus by the Labour administration to reducing inequality, building/approving more affordable housing etc has been admirable and does give me hope. Seeing the priorities change overnight from the wealthy parts of our borough to the more needy has been really interesting and shown me how quickly politicians can actually make a difference when they want to.

Agree with this. Something we definitely shouldnt have imported from USA. Nothing more than a my dicks bigger than your dick contest.
