Anyone else wobbling about voting Labour?

1000 replies

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 27/06/2024 17:39

I desperately want to GTTO but the last few years have taught me that ‘any change’ isn’t always good and things can get worse, even if you think they can’t.

I’ve watched all the debates now and Starmer is so… wet. I don’t like him. The first thing he did when women’s rights were mentioned his first thought was men who ‘identify as women’ and how ‘marginalised’ they are. When asked about immigration he squirmed and squirmed before muttering about his role as DPP (who cares? We want to know what you plan to do NOW). When asked about his support for Corbyn he said ‘but I didn’t think we would actually win..’

There’s something about him which is making me very uncomfortable and I just have a bad feeling now about what would happen if he was leader.

Anyone else? If you’re not voting Tory or Labour, who are you voting for and why? I assumed I would vote Labour this time but my gut is suddenly screaming at me not to!

Nope, I am excited to be voting Labour! 🌹

DogInATent · 27/06/2024 20:32

So you support Reform's policies.
If you think being anti-woke is somehow pro-women you're a fool. A vote for Reform is not a protest, it's a vote for Reform.

I have not read their policies in any great depth. All I want is for the Tories to go back to what they should be. If Reform take enough votes this will be the wake up call that the Tories need.

albatrossjoe · 27/06/2024 20:34

Livinginaclock · 27/06/2024 18:05

I'm not, because I don't trust them on women's rights, and I've been a Labour voter all my life.

I'm in the same position. My values align closest to the Green party this time around, so I feel torn between being led by that to have a voice... Or voting labour because I believe at my core anyone is better than the Conservatives.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 20:35

@YaWeeFurryBastard except it is false. Labour sued to have Corbyn as the leader and extreme left wing people flooded into the party. Momentum an extreme left wing group had a lot of influence. Starmer got rid of Momentum from Labour, and either expelled the extreme left wing, or they left anyway. There are very few extreme left wing people left in the labour party.

VoteLabour · 27/06/2024 20:36

@LuluBlakey1 , I vote for the candidate who will be the best MP for the constituency, not for the party.

Some constituencies have excellent MPs who stand for a small party (e.g. Green, Plaid Cymru) or as independents.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 20:36

@albatrossjoe The green party want to legalise prostitution. Make it just another career choice.

IwillNOTplayfastandloosewithpublicfinances · 27/06/2024 20:36

I want to like Starmer, but I agree he’s a bit wet. He prevaricates too much. He puts winning votes before principle and what is best for the country - ie. he refused to take an anti-Brexit stance and did naff all in that campaign because he was all about appeasing ‘red wall’ voters etc who had switched to Con / UKIP to ‘Get Brexit Done.’ Even today, he is scared to just come out and say what we all now know if we didn’t in 2016 - Brexit was / is a shambles. He just sits on the fence - it’s popularity and politics before principles. Same as the current wave of Tories.

When pinned down on what he will do to ‘Stop the Boats’ he just waffles about something he did years ago about stopping a plane over the Atlantic. Well, what’s that got to do with it?

And when he starts on that diatribe about ‘That little pebble-dashed semi meant everything to my family….’ - give me a break. It’s not an X Factor sob story moment and how patronising to the millions / billions of people who live in semis just about everywhere in the U.K. - yes, even with pebble dash as well. Bleurrgh.

Obvs I will not be voting Tory because they have ruined the country with Brexit.

All politicians lie and there will be corruption in all parties so that not a massive factor for me.

I will vote LD because they tend to win in our area and at least they are honest that Brexit was stupid. So that’s it really.

Lifeomars · 27/06/2024 20:36

I am not especially enthused about Labour but the mere thought of another 5 years like the last 14 years means I will vote for the Labour candidate in my constituency. What has annoyed me is the fact that not one single party has canvassed in my area, and only Labour has bothered to leaflet round here. So based on that alone they are the only party who has made the slightest attempt to outline what they intend to do should they gain power.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 20:37

Starmer got rid of the extreme left wing from Labour and Momentum. That takes strength. He is hated by the extreme left wing.

Bushmillsbabe · 27/06/2024 20:37

Trickabrick · 27/06/2024 17:41

You do realise you vote for your constituency MP, not a Prime Minister? If you’re wobbling, do some research on the candidates in your local area and pick the one that aligns most closely to your values.

That's a tough one for me though.
The labour MP in our area is an absolutely horrible hypocritical snob. And the Tory one is actually quite nice. But I don't really want the Torys back in.

BlackFriYay · 27/06/2024 20:38

I'm voting Labour without a shadow of a doubt.

Our local labout MP (Ellie Reeves) is wonderful and has stepped in to help me twice over the past 1.5 years when I've reached out. I had DWP and NHS problems that I wasn't getting anywhere with, but they were resolved very quickly once she got involved. I finally got my life saving surgery that the hospital kept cancelling. I'd probably be dead now otherwise.

If by any chance Ellie or any of her team are reading this - thank you again ♥️

Dibbydoos · 27/06/2024 20:39

@MaryMaryVeryContrary you and 62% of voters in your poll have very short memories. Labour was the best government in my lifetime - I posted this chart in a chat on this before, but in case you didnt see the post...So voting Labour is a no- brainer!

Add to this the amount of fraud the audit committee has found £5b under Boris Johnson and £21b in Sunak's first 4m of term and I cant understand why anyone is dithering.

Vote Labour, they will raise taxes (all parties would need to so we can dig ourselves out of the mess we're in caused by multiple terms of tory governments) but mainly by closing loopholes and taxing non-doms - we will then get the services we deserve.

And on taxes, George Osbourne (tory) raised VAT from 5% to 20%, so if anyone thinks the Tories are not adding tax are very wrong. dont believe me google national statistics to see how every labour government has borrowed less and delivered more.

Gordon Brown, btw kept us largely out of a very deep and disastrous global recession. Yes the governmemt spent money to do it, but we now owe multiple times the amount we did when Gordon Brown was defeated. The country wasnt broke but it f-ing well is now.

Stop dithering and get this government out. Labour is the only party to vote for.

Anyone else wobbling about voting Labour?
Silviasilvertoes · 27/06/2024 20:39

It’s not an issue here as it’s Tory/LibDem. The other candidates usually lose their deposit. I’m not a massive fan of Starmer but it’s definitely time to GTTO.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 20:39

@IwillNOTplayfastandloosewithpublicfinances The conservative government has been openly corrupt. Enormous contracts of taxpayers money awarded to their mates. They are not like the old Conservative party. John Major would never have acted like that.
Excuse open corruption if you want, but I think to turn a blind eye demands a lack of self respect. A sense of letting yourself be treated like a total mug.

Reform are just like the Tories, only more so. More nasty, more in favour of privatizing the NHS, they want to restrict your human rights. But if that's what you want, tick that box. But do it in knowledge not ignorance.

runningonberocca · 27/06/2024 20:41

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 19:31

@runningonberocca if you want to vote for our Prime Minister based on how they come across on TV go ahead. I think Farage comes across best, he is great at TV interviews. He would also be an incompetent nightmare of a Prime Minister.

I’m not. Firstly I’m not voting for our Prime Minister- I’m voting for an MP for our constituency. Secondly I’m voting on the basis of my confidence in their policies. It’s hard to have any confidence in a party when the party leader doesn’t seem to either know or believe in the policies himself.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 20:41

I am just reposting this taken from someone elses comment. Because it is a staggering amount of corruption.

Add to this the amount of fraud the audit committee has found £5b under Boris Johnson and £21b in Sunak's first 4m of term and I cant understand why anyone is dithering.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 27/06/2024 20:41

MrsSunshine2b · 27/06/2024 20:27

That's how FPTP works. We had a referendum on making it more democratic and people were not interested.

Except you've missed the point.

If everyone who votes Labour because they don't want the Tories in, and everyone who votes Tory because they dislike Labour suddenly switched to Green (for example), it wouldn't just be a two horse FPTP race. It'd be three.

So if everyone votes for what they wanted, FPTP would be whichever party had the genuine majority of the country behind them, not because they were the lesser of two evils.

Churchview · 27/06/2024 20:41

Absc · 27/06/2024 20:30

I think for once what clarkson wrote about labour is correct what they are saying will kill the next generation of farmers.

Not keen on any but my vote will not be for labour

Driving through the South West he gates of farms are usually plastered with Tory Posters pre election. I haven't seen one this year.

From what I hear here in dairy farming country is that most ordinary farmers feel shafted by the Tories - it's only the huge estate farms (often run by Tory friends, family and the aristocracy) who have the time of day for them now.

OMG.

Brexit is a shambles cos the Tories didnt do Brexit.

Red tape, no agreements etc etc have screwed us, not Brexit.

Hold the government responsible for their ineffective approacjes, dont point at Labour for not wanting to open the EU membership again. Brexit voters won. Remoaners should stop. What we all need are the right processes and agreements in place!

No scot would say this. We have had the greens in power sharing in Scotland with the SNP and it is them who want to trans your kids, introduced gender ideology into nursery schools and claim ‘how can anyone know if they are a man or a woman if they haven’t had their choromosones checked. They are totally and utterly insane.

Which is a shame as we desperately need a party to vote for which puts the environment front and centre.

Half my family were in farming when the Conservatives came to power. Only one I left now. They all feel shafted.

orangepostbox · 27/06/2024 20:07

@Screamingabdabz You are out of touch. Men and trans women already work in women's prisons, in refuges and rape crisis. The situation is already here. Men are allowed to work in women's prisons even when they say they are men. The Conservatives have not changed this in 14 years.

Yes and if it’s bad now, it’ll be a free for all once labour get in. Pfff. Women’s rights and safeties. Gone. Back to the dark ages.

IwillNOTplayfastandloosewithpublicfinances · 27/06/2024 20:43

@orangepostbox - I’m not turning a blind eye to corruption. No way would I vote Con. I’m just not voting Labour either.
