Did anyone enjoy Taylor but felt at 3.5 hours it…. dragged a little?

Fromthenotorious · 24/06/2024 07:12

I admit that i’m not her biggest fan and it was a bit of a fluke that i got a ticket to go with friends.

I enjoy her music and think she’s amazing but a dedicated Swiftie… I am not!

I just felt that it could have been at least thirty mins shorter and would have been more enjoyable. Even amongst the hardened Swifties around us, I sensed a little restlessness.

Anyone else agree?

I often wonder which artists and songs we will still be hearing in 20,30,40 years.

Me too - and the suprising thing is, you can hardly ever guess it. It's linked to fame at the time, but this doesn't seem to be a single deciding factor.

FWIW OP, 3.5 hours would be too long for me too - regardless of artist.

I’d be interested to understand the mentality of spending time online saying negative things about an artist, who doesn’t seem to have done anything terrible, but you just don’t rate their music.

I can’t imagine making multiple posts about an artist that I’m just not into. If I’m not into someone, but others are snd the artist seems perfectly pleasant, I’m not interested in commenting.

'Who doesn't seem to have done anything terrible' is not 100% accurate, much as she wants you to think that way.

AlbertCamel · 24/06/2024 09:42

RatZilla · 24/06/2024 07:48

You did well. I can't get through a 3 minute song of hers on the radio without switching over.

Totally I'm agreement here. Not my thing at all. I've been perplexed by the sheer number of threads about her on here recently. It also seems as if some TS fans cannot grasp that other people have absolutely no interest in her and that other people can and do produce better music.

But an artist doing a 3 hour gig...if you're a fan surely that's a good thing!

Cos I’m a miserable cunt and it’s my birthday! I dunno, I felt like it.
Gotta say though, your questions sounds like you’re telling off a kid who pushed their sibling.

I feel like someone telling off a kid who pushed their sibling.
Oh and Happy Birthday! 🎉 how amazing to have a birthday on such a glorious day (weather wise).

I will add though, I do think TS will stand the test of time. She isn't stopping or slowing down either. Do not think Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles or any other currant pop artist will. The odd song might but not the artist.

Some folk will still be listening to TS no doubt, that's their choice but there's so much more out there.

But it became very personal mal very quickly didn't it? 'u did well I can't do three minutes' 'oh I just don't get her, can someone please explain?'

It's utterly bizarre.

But how is that OP’s fault? To mischaracterise her thread as “slagging off” Taylor Swift. With one particular poster who wanted the OP to, and I am quoting her word for word, “Stop gloating on here and think of what you've just witnessed.” And unless I missed it, I haven’t seen any post going on about not being able to listen to 3 minutes, but rather about longevity. I’ve seen more heated comments from Swifties which is very off-putting and also equally fascinating.

How nasty
This is a discussion thread. Just because someone didn't sacrifice their first-born in eternal gratitude for being able to attend a song and dance act by a woman with a carbon footprint the size of a small moon, you call them gloaty and ungrategul?
That is some extra level of bitchy shit

Same. They’re all batshit crazy 😂

KimberleyClark · 24/06/2024 09:22

Agreed. She’s no Joni Mitchell or Carole King. Remains to be seen whether her songs will still be being played on golden oldie radio shows 50 years down the line.

Nobody plays Joni Mitchell or Carole King any more either! They’re remembered fondly because they were talented female artists of their generation. As is Taylor Swift. Lyrically she’s a genius. Some of her lines take my breath away they are that clever. But the posters who say ‘she’s just a vapid pop princess’ don’t get it, which is fine, but they’re bitter about it. Which is not.

Why tear down this talented young woman who is bringing joy everywhere she goes?

SerafinasGoose · 24/06/2024 09:47

CurtainsOfSparta · 24/06/2024 08:34

I wanted to see FM on their last tour but no way could I afford the ticket prices!!! Converts are so expensive these days!

Funny that, isn't it? I was a festival-goer until fairly recently (Download and previously Sonisphere/Knebworth) - for which, granted, tickets to stay the full three days were quite costly.

Tickets for opera/classical are a steal by comparison; other than for Royal Opera, which certainly aren't more expensive than your average in-demand rock gig; not to mention a football match. Yet this form of live experience is deemed 'elitist' because the tickets are too expensive. Why? In most cases they're cheaper, especially some of the very respectable northern companies.

Do not compute.

TheDarkMonarch · 24/06/2024 09:47

To be fair, I play both all the time - and I'm too young to have been around the first time for them. It's possible I am an outlier though. 😂

RedYellowPinkGreenPurpleOrangeBlue · 24/06/2024 09:48

I didn't see it, but my daughter and her friends did. (At London, Wembley, last night.) Haven't heard back from her yet! (She is probably still sleeping in her hotel room!) I think no matter how much you love someone, 3 and a half hours is crazy. I didn't know it was that long! They must have a lot more patience than me. I couldn't do it.

We went to see Sarah Millican some years ago. and she was on for an hour and 25 minutes, and that was fine. I loved her, but was ready to go at the end. But we went to Lee Evans about a few years earlier, and even though he was really funny, he was on for two and a half hours - and that seemed a struggle for the last hour!

I was tired and weary after about an hour and a half. I'd laughed a lot and that wore me out a bit! But two and a half hours was too much. How does Taylor do it? Does she shove Duracell batteries up her arse?! (Same question about Lee Evans!!!)

Still no idea why you went though @Fromthenotorious if you are not a fan! I wouldn't waste my life going to see people I was not interested in.

Probably The Doors, The Beatles, The Stones, The Mac, Hendrix etc., exactly the same as it is now.

Exactly this. It didn't take long for people to start berating and bashing Taylor Swift on this thread, did it? 🙄

edited after seeing Becky's post. I'm not getting roped into an argument with the Taylor Swift haters.

BeckyAMumsnet · 24/06/2024 09:52

Hi everyone, can we call for a bit of peace and love on the thread, please? OK we'll say it, can't resist. You need to calm down... We welcome a wide range of views on Mumsnet - that's what makes this place so interesting and informative - and it's really not on to get personal with someone because they have a different opinion from you. MNers who repeatedly break our guidelines may have their accounts suspended, and we're sure you'd rather it didn't come to that.

There is literally nothing more more boring and insufferable than a music snob. Nothing on earth.

op what a really tone deaf post. You didn’t want to go anyway and then moaned about it after. Have you been on social media and seen The people who really really wanted to go and couldn’t get tickets? Or who couldn’t afford to go? Have a word with yourself!

To be fair, there will always be people who can’t afford to go to concerts/go on holiday/buy a new car or house…

That doesn’t mean someone should never mention it or complain if they’ve had a bad experience. If someone said “we went out for a meal and the waiter spat in my dinner and called me an arsehole” that we should reply “There are people who can’t afford to eat out. You should be grateful you could go in the first place”.

For the record I took my dd to TS and my back was breaking by the end of it (I can’t stand due to disability) and almost 7 hours in a football stadium seat was a killer!

Exactly- classical music has never been more accessible for everyone- most pop music these days is bland and uninteresting and peer pressure popular.

There’s some great music still being created in many genres, creative, challenging, important.

The type of pop music TS belongs is, and always has been, disposable. It does nothing art is important for, it’s something that’s popular, because it’s popular, the tickets were for an event which everyone wanted to see, largely because everyone wanted to see it!

it’s a collective ritual - people want/needcollective rituals. I suppose to that extent it fulfils a purpose. It just offers very little else.

07.48 am was the three minute post. And now - just like Taylor bingo - we've had 'generic pop' and 'massive carbon footprint'.

It's so tired.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/06/2024 10:07

@SerafinasGoose i was married to one for ten years so I do claim some special insight. Like what music you like, I really couldn’t give a damn, but sneering and sniping at other’s tastes because you believe yourself to have some superior insight, gets really old really quickly.

In fact, looking at this thread it follows almost exactly the atheist vs religious threads in structure, arguments etc. Guess the cult of celebrity really is the new religion.

ExitChasedByCars · 24/06/2024 10:12

@Anonym00se That’s a good point. But I guess, when it comes to Taylor Swift, it seems as though any form of constructive criticism or the mere thought of it, you’re a hater, unkind etc. I’m sure there are Taylor Swift haters/antis etc., which is something that I don’t agree with, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re therefore not allowed to have different tastes in music or cannot be critical of a public figure who clearly has a lot of clout and can do a world of good with her billions if she wishes to but does a lot of harm for the environment. We are allowed to have different perspectives and that doesn’t make people trolls or haters. I didn’t even see any comments from OP disparaging Taylor Swift, but I guess she must be “grateful” because many people missed out and is now a “music snob” and not a “girl’s girl”.

Lilysienna1 · 24/06/2024 10:13

Wow. This post is like a literal slap in the face to all the real fans that didn’t get a ticket, but spent countless hours, days, weeks and months desperately trying to get tickets. Absolutely no need to come on here and gloat. I’ve watched the entire concert several times now, and each time I feel overcome with sadness, that I didn’t get to be there and be a part of such a huge huge gig. I hope I get a chance at least once in my life to experience this. Please please don’t gloat. It’s not pretty.

I'm interested to understand the mentality of people who, like you, suggest that there is something wrong with anyone who extends conversations beyond blind approval: "I like Taylor Swift" or "I love lasagne".

If we only ever talked about things we like, we wouldn't be able to discuss anything important at all! Like politics, or relationship problems, or situations we find unpleasant.

Unless it's only pop music about which we shouldn't speak negatively....?!

It's not like anyone is saying anything horrible. People are entitled to express things outside the realms of pure approval, and can find common ground or shared interest in the rejection or critique of things.

Engaging critically with the world doesn't make you into some nasty weirdo with suspicious motives.
