most of us would steal a million from a big multinational if we knew we'd get away with it

I would. I would also steal from some individuals, like Sunak, or other multimillionaires.

It’s an interesting question. I wonder how many people who are sent things in error or undercharged at the till would speak up, too.

I think some people's minds work differently for an error of £10 and something else that could be life-changing. I can imagine there are only a few people whose hearts would not race if they logged onto their bank accounts and saw a Monopoly style 'Bank error in your favour' of £1m. Most people would think about it for a bit.

Nouvellenovel · 23/06/2024 09:31

Well anyone shopping at Tesco should think about who they’re giving money to.
Read about Shirley Porter.
And then feel sorry for millionaires.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 23/06/2024 09:46

If I KNEW I would get away with it, there's no end to what I would do OP.

But I don't.

Years ago before digital banking I paid in a cheque for £72.50

I was paid in cash by my employer so didn't really check my bank statement, and direct debits weren't really a thing then either.

6 months later I discovered that they had put in my account as £72,500.

This would have been a life changing amount of money, but I told the bank.

Do I regret it? Kind of as I don't think they would've realised.

Scottishshortbread11877 · 23/06/2024 10:14

I wouldn't? I wouldn't steal from anyone

coldcallerbaiter · 23/06/2024 13:13

The reality there no such thing as the 3 wishes from a genie that you get to dictate the outcome of the theft. There is never a guarantee in real life that you get away with it. Even if you do not mind prison, your name is still on Google as a thief potentially for the rest if your life. Your reputation and ability to work is damaged and people would hold you in low regard.

Universalsnail · 22/06/2024 22:15

As long as I definitely wouldn't get caught and there would be zero consequences to the theft then I wouldn't think twice about it, not just from big corporations but also from billionaires.

In reality though I can't think of a situation where I could possibly be 100 percent confident enough to be sure I would get away with it and if I wasn't 100 percent confident then it wouldn't be worth the life long anxiety I'd have to live with over it. So I wouldn't do it.

Agree and also to these Robin Hoods, if society crumbles, say in a war or natural disaster, all we have is our morals and possessions. It is ok to steal from a billionaire now, but when it hits the fan, millionaires will be fair game…then the eyes will settle on you and it will be YOUR turn to get pillaged. They will get away with it after all, so it is fine…

Don't even need to wait for an apocalypse. Anybody could use the same logic to justify stealing from the millionaire thief.
I suppose for the 'big multinational' the justification is that no single individual would lose anything.

Except you then have to prove where the money came from.

That is the problem, of course. Plus the audit trail of where the money's gone in the first place. It's like some people think it's like taking from the till and the money can't be traced.

People that daft invariably get caught. Ex was an auditor (pre-computer) and he did explain to me how it could be done, but it meant very fast on your feet, stealing enough to last you for the rest of your life and probably living somewhere that didn't have an extradition treaty with the UK.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/06/2024 20:51

Nope. Stealing or not stealing is something that's based on your own moral integrity, not based on a sliding scale of the wealth of the person/organisation you'd be stealing from. If you steal for any other reason than absolute need (starving family etc), you are a bad person.

Darkdiamond · 23/06/2024 20:58

I find that most people with this 'one rule for me and another rule for thee' approach, are generally quite slimy in a lot of their affairs, due to how easily they can deceive themselves about a situations moral neutrality.

No, I never would.

StopStartStop · 23/06/2024 21:05

I would not, and I wouldn't have any respect for people who did.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 23/06/2024 21:06

No. I haven't RTT - I don't need to. My own moral code is clear. I don't steal from others. That is anyone.

ClareBlue · 23/06/2024 21:07

I love the mindset that thinks it's fine to steal from morally bankruptcy businesses or people because they are ripping off people or overcharging etc. Because you then become exactly the same, which uis fine if you want to be that person. Everyone sets their own moral compass, but if you follow that path then you have no moral authority to critise when someone does it to you. And most people are honest.

pretty much but not all sheikhs (this is used as a first name all over the world and not just in oil rich regions and also used as a title by religious scholars), as specified oil sheikhs. and didn't say they spend ALL their money on debauchery, but a lot of it, yes. the stories I could tell you.

ps I am taking from personal experience and I'm Muslim (not that I think the majority of oil sheikhs practise Islam in any meaningful way) of middle Eastern ancestry.

either way, this whole thread is tongue in cheek. so maybe take a chill pill?

Thank you so much for the unwarranted and unnecessary lesson on the nomcleture of sheiks
Just because one is of a certain culture and religion does not make one an authority on it, but throw out tropes to boost a tongue-in-cheek post if it helps

DivergentTris · 24/06/2024 06:46

Ok, so you're dishonest and immoral enough to steal the money and get away with it, but that can be the easy bit, what would you do with it once you have it?

Do you realise how hard it is to spend dirty money? It's often this part that jumps up and bites you on your arse and then everyone will find out how dishonest and immoral you are and you'd end up looking like a right dickhead.
