Starmer, JKR, what's most important to most women?

1000 replies

PupInAPram · 22/06/2024 13:14

In my more than 60 years, decades of being a single working parent, many experiences of being on the bones of my arse, Labour Party policies have made huge beneficial differences in my day-to-day life. Worrying if there is a man in the next toilet or feeling uncomfortable with a trans woman has literally never been on my radar. If I'm making a decision about voting for the politician who can bring about the greatest good for the greatest number, it's Starmer every time. I wish JKR would just pipe down.

No, but YouGov has, and found that whilst views differ on issues like trans women in women's sports etc., only 8% of people actually pay much attention to the so called "trans debate", and most of us are much more interested in living our own lives than worrying about what's under the skirts of other people.

https://yougov.co.uk/society/articles/43194-where-does-british-public-stand-transgender-rights-1

They polled the 'majority' of people, or a small number and extrapolated the responses?

PupInAPram · 22/06/2024 18:14

MrsSunshine2b · 22/06/2024 18:05

They are quoting YouGov stats which show that most people are spectacularly unbothered about trans people. It's just that all the frothers at the mouth are here on Mumsnet clutching their pearls.

Thank you. Reinforcing my impression from the rest of this thread that this will not jeopardise the chances of a Labour government. Bad enough with the constant pile on of lies from the daily fail and other right wing papers. To have JKR join the pile on just felt like a bit much.

I'm glad I've started this thread. Oddly enough despite the AIBU vote I have found it quite reassuring.

But surely the men who would want to do such things have always been around?

So have burglars. You don’t start leaving your doors unlocked or dismantling alarm systems because they’re going to do it anyway. If anything you try and add more (ring doorbells and the like).

Oldcodger6 · 22/06/2024 18:15

Is that the determiner of what we shouldn't fight for: 'what most people are spectacularly unbothered about'? Shock

Have you checked your poll?

illinivich · 22/06/2024 18:15

If only 8% of people are interested, and only a small percentage of people id as trans, its a very small hill that Starmer is willing to sound bonkers for.

YellowDayToday · 22/06/2024 18:15

I do not want men in my toilets, changing rooms, women’s only sports, women’s prisons, giving personal care, etc etc etc

I am allowed boundaries. I should not have to fight for them. I don’t give a toss how you dress, who you fuck, whether you have a beard but like wearing lipstick. I respect your choice to do this. In return respect my boundaries!!!

They are quoting YouGov stats which show that most people are spectacularly unbothered about trans people. It's just that all the frothers at the mouth are here on Mumsnet clutching their pearls.

Yougov conducted several polls on attitudes to trans issues asking the same questions over multiple years, by 2022 public opinion had shifted to more people saying trans women were not women than were. On other questions such as trans women in women's sports, the public started against and only got more so.

Many organisations trained by Stonewall have tried to frame women with gender critical views as bigots and Employment Tribunals have time and time again ruled against employers who have discriminated against their employees.
It’s a shame some posters here don’t do their research but instead try and smear others as racists and bigots.

And indeed the Prof Jo Phoenix tribunal, which she of course won, specifically found the 'racist' comparison to be discriminatory and hostile.

Poll results tend to differ dramatically when people find out that more than 90% of 'transwomen' keep their male genitalia

You are obviously very Labour loyal and that is your main concern

But do you not want any changes wrt this issue?

Would you have been ok with Self ID for instance?
Men in refuges and sports
Puberty blockers?

Starmer I’m sure is happy you would put it all aside for his career but do you have any limits?

You have no way of knowing whether your brother is a predator or a pervert actually.

Actually true, but big sigh, you cant see why we dont want men in our spaces.

You have literally written why we dont want men in our spaces. We cant tell which ones are nice. Even in our own family. Why would we have a better success rate with complete strangers.

I’ve had the misfortune to deal with KD. Absolutely not one of you ‘you all hate trans people you big pearl clutchers’ would want him in your spaces or around your daughters. I also didn’t have to check his willy to know he’s a man.

Though I’m sure we’ll have a ‘he’s not a real trans woman!’ along in a minute.

I suspect people who shout 'pearl clutchers' are more towards the Katie end of the womanly spectrum tbh.

And it’s actually not a troll account! Have a read.

Easy to spout troll isn’t it.

You are wrong.

This is the one reason I cannot bring myself to vote for Labour despite very good reasons to break from Conservative rule.

It might seem like a remote issue to you but there is a significant enough section of women care very much about erosion of women's rights.

I see the parallel in the US to erosion of women's right to abortion. I would not need an abortion at my age but will defend to the death the right of any woman to her bodily autonomy.

raspberryberet7 · 22/06/2024 18:20

Well said nice to hear sensible opinions

Sloejelly · 22/06/2024 18:20

Just a reminder that women are at 9 times more risk of sexual assault in mixed sex spaces.

You misreport this study. There were 9 time more sexual assaults in mixed sex spaces but only half the number of mixed sex spaces compared to single sex spaces. This meant the risk of sexual assault in mixed sex spaces was 18 times higher.

WinterInTheAutumn · 22/06/2024 18:22

I've never had cancer and no one I know has had cancer, so why should I want my tax money going to find it's treatment?
Doesn't affect me, it doesn't exist

Dont be silly. 1 in 2 people will have cancer. I’m waiting to find out whether I have it a second time. With the best will in the world, the two don’t compare at all. The number of trans people is tiny.

You are making huge assumptions about my views about trans women. The thread has drifted right away from my original assertion. The things that have affected my life and the lives of the women around me are social inequality, underfunded public services like the NHS and schools and a general level of corruption and incompetence following 14 years of Tory rule. The number of times my life and the lives of the women around me have actually been impacted by an encounter with a scary trans women is zero.
