People going to multiple Eras dates are selfish

I'm not a Swiftie but DD is a fan and I signed up for the waiting list last year. No code, everything sold out so I assumed I wasn't going to get tickets. Yesterday, I got an email from Ticketmaster with a code for Wembley this weekend and managed to get 4 tickets. DD and friends are delighted.

Other friends are still desperately hoping for tickets, either this weekend or in August. I've seen lots of posts on MN and elsewhere by people in the same boat. Then I've seen other posters saying they, or someone they know, have been/are going multiple times. I just don't understand this mentality. You've seen it once, you know there are thousands of people hoping for that opportunity and not everyone will be able to go because there aren't enough tickets for everyone who wants one. Why take more than your fair share?

YABU - them's the breaks.
YANBU - it's selfish.

There are many things I actively try not to be judgemental about. Such as

Being a Tory
Yes Voter
Not recycling
Not caring about the environment

Eras ticket consumption... Nah. Rock on if you can afford it. It's a concert, not an organ.

5431go · 21/06/2024 20:58

Out of interest, how much were the tickets from Ticketmaster ?

Tricho · 21/06/2024 19:40

Who's to say what someone's "fair share" is?

A net worth of a billion is arguably way above someone's "fair share" of money given there are those that can't afford to eat?

But that's OK.

A net worth of a billion is arguably way above someone's "fair share" of money

Ironically (unless it was deliberate, in which case chapeau), this seems to be Taylor Swift's actual net worth.

Plsdiscuss · 21/06/2024 20:59

Friend has a cousin who's paid for his daughter to go 5 times VIP.

He can afford it.

Whereas my daughter is a massive fan, never got a presale code and has resigned herself to watching the Eras show on Disney plus

Thems the breaks

Jazzjazzyjulez · 21/06/2024 20:59

Went to multiple dates, no regrets or guilt.

Life isn’t fair, not sure why this is the one aspect where you expect it to be.

It is selfish. It's an incredibly in demand show, people who go to multiple times are prioritising their desire to go again over someone's chance seeing it once. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it meets the definition of selfish - (of a person, action, or motive) lacking consideration for other people; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure. There is no mechanism to prevent it however, and the excuse people always use is that there is no guarantee that if they didn't buy the ticket that it would go to someone more deserving.

How does one 'deserve' a ticket to a concert?

Should a certain number be given away for free? To those who 'deserve' them?

And by your definition, aren't most of us 'selfish'? Most of us are vastly more interested in ourselves and those close to us than in strangers.

OonaStubbs · 21/06/2024 21:00

Why would anyone want to go more than once? It'll be the same show every night.

parentfodder · 21/06/2024 21:00

Tricho · 21/06/2024 20:46

I find the "Eras" thing so pretentious when her career is 10 years old or so?

When you've got the longevity of Cher, madonna, Elton, kylie - then we can talk Eras.

18 years

KingofCats · 21/06/2024 21:01

Well DD bought an album 2 years ago , we got the pre sale code and could still only buy £300 tickets in another country with expensive flights and accommodation.

We spent £1000s and had an amazing time. She got up at 5am and queued for 11 hours and was right at the front.

But, when her best friend got a code yesterday for Wembley tickets tonight (down the road for us) for £58 behind the stage she bought one of those too. If she hadn’t bought it it’s unlikely to go to another fan for the same price I’ve seen these on viagogo and StubHub for £400.

We paid £109 for the 'budget' seats in Edinburgh

Why would anyone want to go more than once? It'll be the same show every night.

She does an acoustic mini set of ‘surprise’ songs every night, so being at multiple shows is the way to see all of them.

Also, the show is unbelievable in terms of choreography and staging so I could easily watch it again and again.

Lentilweaver · 21/06/2024 21:03

Thanks @SummaLuvin and @parentfodder. £109 seems a bargain.

There are certain musicals in London I have gone to see 3 times, so I can understand why people want to go multiple times.

I’m with you, I know a woman in her 30s who’s been twice with the same group of friends. They did the whole friendship bracelet thing as well, bit weird in my opinion.

"Weird", maybe.

But if they can afford it and want to do it, what's wrong with it?

rupsky · 21/06/2024 21:04

@Ariel45 😘

parentfodder · 21/06/2024 21:05

I had a brilliant night planning to watch it again on Disney. I wouldn't go again though.

Don't mind people buying multiple tickets, object to resales

Seated tickets at Wembley started at £58 for a restricted view, up to nearly £200.

Yeah tbh I do find it greedy and selfish. Taylor played 3 nights at Anfield and I saw so many posts of people going to all 3 nights. There are so many fans that missed out that could have had one of those tickets. Surely it would be getting boring on day 3 of the same show anyway.

LlynTegid · 21/06/2024 21:06

The ticket allocation process may be unreasonable as it is for many high demand events. However it is not selfish to want to see entertainment you enjoy more than once.

5431go · 21/06/2024 21:07

I hear everyone saying “if they can afford it?” Genuinely interested what kind of jobs allow people to spend 1000’s on concert tickets.

In my household we are a Banker and a Doctor and could not afford to spend this amount of tickets.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/06/2024 21:09

It enraged me a little and I had to grit my teeth a little bit at friends who were taking their kids multiple times. But only because I never got a code or waitlisted. Even when tickets were released later on I still didn’t get a code. Tried twickets for hours and hours in the run up to get face value tickets, from people playing by the rules and reselling at a fair price, but no luck. Ended up paying over the odds on viagogo at the last minute and clearly the complicated codes and waitlist process didn’t stop tickets getting into the scalpers hands. It was great fun and a real treat for DC who resigned themselves to not going.

XenoBitch · 21/06/2024 21:11

YABU
It is entertainment. It is not something essential like food or loo roll that people are buying up and causing other people to go without, therefore causing suffering.

If someone has the money, then they can knock themselves right out. I could not name one single Taylor Swift song, but I can understand how people would happily see her night after night. I know people who will follow their favourite band around the UK when they are touring. It is their money.

I think it is sad that some PP are judging others for being such a huge fan of something...

DarkDarkNight · 21/06/2024 21:13

I went once and would absolutely love to go again. I’d snap up tickets for Wembley in August if I could get any.

My niece paid £94 for one standing ticket. They could have saved and gone three times at that price. They are not a huge earner.

BlowDryRat · 21/06/2024 19:41

Yes, they clearly can but I don't think it's particularly nice that they do. It's like the weeks before lockdown when some people were running round the supermarket panic-buying 10 multipacks of loo roll.

It's absolutely nothing like that. 🙄

Do you have kids? Those things are money sponges, that might be a difference in general spending ability. Also adults without kids are only paying for their own tickets, parents will have to pay for multiples which quickly increases the cost vastly.

Face value tickets were not too pricy. Most locations the best tickets firsthand from Ticketmaster were max £180, so even seeing 5 shows you are spending lass than £1k on tickets (of course there would be some incidental costs).

It's priorities. Some people might not go on holiday or save in other areas to afford this.
