To think I heard a dog barking on a KLM flight?

Is this possible?

I flew from Amsterdam to Edinburgh today with KLM. As the plane started to taxi before takeoff, I distinctly heard the high pitched yelps of a dog underneath us.

Do normal planes offer dog carriage in the hold?

Yes, some airlines do offer this. It’s common in other countries to see people taking their animals onboard in carriers too. The airports have animal reception centre s for hold animals

MonsteraMama · 21/06/2024 00:26

Yeah KLM allow pets in the hold, and in the cabin on some flights. I got to sit next to a very pleasant cat recently, he was the best plane neighbour I've ever had.

MorrisZapp · 21/06/2024 00:31

I'm so glad I'm not going mad!!

Most likely the hydrolics pumping. I hear it all the time when I fly, at that same exact time before takeoff. I asked the crew and this is what they said. They often joke it's dogs in the hold apparently.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 21/06/2024 00:52

Yes my friend went to Amsterdam for a few months last year and brought her dog and he was in the hold of the same flight.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 21/06/2024 00:52

i would love to sit next to a cat on a plane!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 21/06/2024 00:58

Isn’t this a normal thing?

The "dog barking" sound is one particular to the A320 family, and is the PTU(Power transfer unit) - a reversible hydraulic motor that transfers hydraulic power without fluid exchange between systems. KLM mainline doesn't operate any A320 family aircraft, this was likely a 737 or embraer 190.

Yes they heard a dog.

Why so rude? A quick Google search on the klm website and it appears they DO fly the 320.

How on earth do you know what type of plane the op was on? I was giving her a possible explanation for the noise because I hear the same thing ALL the time during taxi, when I fly, and this is what the staff told me.

They don't operate the A320 currently... They've ordered but haven't received them yet. Air France in the same group does however.

To follow up further, the only aircraft flying the Schiphol Edinburgh route today were E190s and 737s

I found @RealOliveTraybake post really interesting to be honest. Amazing when someone pops up with that kind of specialist knowledge.

Ladyandherspaniel · 21/06/2024 01:50

I know this isn't the question but I often wonder how scary it must be for a dog to be in the hold of the plane by itself. And how traumatised they must be afterwards.

My dog is traumatised by the hoover so imagine how loud and scary that must be for them 😭

I couldn't personally do that to my dog.

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/06/2024 03:22

I wouldn't put my dog in the hold, though thats more because I fear the dog not making a connecting flight, not being loaded on the correct plane at all, being left on the tarmac, being allowed to escape into the airport grounds (all things I know have happened to dogs, some with fatal consequences)..

My clients that have/do fly their dogs, train them to handle being crated, to cope with loud noises etc and prep for flights long before they go on the first one and in between flights too. Its not (or it should not be!) a case of shoving them in a crate and flying them for hours with zero prep!

Persianpuss · 21/06/2024 04:03

I didn't read @RealOliveTraybake 's posts as angry or rude 🤷‍♀️

CottonCandyLand · 21/06/2024 04:10

When we moved overseas we brought our dogs with us. They had a 14hr flight, pee break, 3 hour flight, 1 hour flight. They were fine, not traumatized at all.
Some dogs don’t cope well at all but mine did. I’m glad I had three together so although they couldn’t see each other they could smell each other.

SD1978 · 21/06/2024 04:22

@ReadthemAndWeep- they o it aggressive sounding posts really are yours- sorry! I also found @RealOliveTraybake responses quite informative! Do you watch all the flight paths too @RealOliveTraybake?!

Clearly an av geek. Absolutely nothing wrong or aggressive about their well considered responses. Thank you @RealOliveTraybake very interesting.

Love it when someone who knows what they’re talking about swoops in like this while all of us are faffing around guessing 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

FiveShelties · 21/06/2024 05:17

When we emigrated to NZ in 2003 we shipped a Sheltie. When we moved back to UK in 2014 we shipped a different Sheltie and then took that same Sheltie back to NZ three years later.

It is the definition of insanity to do three international moves and to ship a dog on each move - it was also very expensive.

This comment amused me!

(My husband is allergic though and would have sneezed the entire way!)

Agreed. Very interesting. I had no idea you’d be able to hear a dog in the hold from above. Mind you, you’d probably hear mine. He is notoriously LOUD!

liveforsummer · 21/06/2024 05:56

KLM may well take dogs on some routes but unless things have changed, Manchester is the only airport in the UK that receives live animals.
