To think I heard a dog barking on a KLM flight?

MorrisZapp · 21/06/2024 00:24

Is this possible?

I flew from Amsterdam to Edinburgh today with KLM. As the plane started to taxi before takeoff, I distinctly heard the high pitched yelps of a dog underneath us.

Do normal planes offer dog carriage in the hold?

The pilot and crew were all utterly immaculate in incredibly crisp, stylish outfits. Women had choice of traditional pencil skirt or adorable little flared slacks. All in Dutch blue, so attractive.

On a recent flight to Edinburgh (Loganair) a blind man had his guide dog with him in the cabin. Lovely dog.

i would love to sit next to a cat on a plane!

I love cats too.

But it would be just the same if its travelling companion had been allergic.

The "dog barking" sound is one particular to the A320 family, and is the PTU(Power transfer unit) - a reversible hydraulic motor that transfers hydraulic power without fluid exchange between systems. KLM mainline doesn't operate any A320 family aircraft, this was likely a 737 or embraer 190.

Yes they heard a dog.

@RealOliveTraybake
That must be one of the most impressive and knowledgeable answers ever given on MN!
The dog barked! Yes indeedy the little dog
barked!

SilkFloss · 21/06/2024 09:44

Another one here re-iterating that @RealOliveTraybake didn't come across as rude in the slightest. They were stating some aviation facts and figures, relevant to the thread.

KLM website says pets in the cabin allowed as long as they are under 8kg

Some airlines allow animals in the cabin but UK regulations do not allow animals to be in the cabin when arriving in the UK regardless of airline policy. They are allowed to be in the cabin on some flights departing the UK though.

ReadthemAndWeep · 21/06/2024 09:45

Nah, the poster was rude.
I offered an explanation to the op and they jumped down my throat with "facts" repeatedly, even though they had no idea what plane the op was on and my Google search proved them wrong.

They didn't want to be wrong and continued with their unproven "facts"

Groveparker01 · 21/06/2024 09:47

I live near an airport that only flies private planes - lots of celebs/F1 teams/politicians/business people etc. They have a dedicated team for people's pets. It's called Sky Pets and I'm a little bit obsessed with it!

I found @RealOliveTraybake post really interesting to be honest. Amazing when someone pops up with that kind of specialist knowledge.

Me too.

+1 for that! I love offbeat facts that are probably useless to me but interesting nonetheless.

You know all of us who think you’re the rude one can read all the posts too, right?

KLM may well take dogs on some routes but unless things have changed, Manchester is the only airport in the UK that receives live animals.

I don't think that's true. Heathrow even has an Animal Reception Centre, which it colloquially knows as the Ark (ARC). It has for many years.

Gatwick has similar facilities.

Animal care facilities at both airports are open 24/7.

I didn't read @RealOliveTraybake 's posts as angry or rude 🤷‍♀️

No, nor me - just sharing insider information that I was interested to hear. 🤷‍♀️

MorrisZapp · 21/06/2024 10:00

I took a cat in a car once (in a basket) and it did a crap which then stank out the car for the duration. How would a cat be guaranteed not to ruin a flight by doing likewise?

OP posts:
TheBestFriend · 21/06/2024 10:03

Small dogs are permitted to be in cabin by some airlines. Larger ones go to hold.

Our cats make it a point of honour to do so every time... and the worst thing is, you can't open the windows in case they escape... the number of times I've turned up at the vet with tears running down my face... 😭

Heathrow has an ARC......a family member works there.

Compash · 21/06/2024 10:05

I couldn't bear to think of a dog being upset in the hold... I'd have to buy him a seat, then dress him up in a hat and coat and give him a fake moustache like a little man...

mitogoshi · 21/06/2024 10:06

Many carriers (not ba) allow small dogs and cats in carriers in the cabin these days. However it could also be aircraft noise!

Yes they heard a dog.

This is my favourite ever geeky technical reply to a question.

I want you as my lawyer.

Lalalalalalalalalalalalala · 21/06/2024 10:09

@RealOliveTraybake wasn't rude. A bit abrupt but not rude. It's not rude for an expert to provide a correction - and looks like she was correct based on other responders here.

I also never thought you'd be able to hear a dog bark from the hold but I sounds like that's what it was. No in cabin into the UK. It's possible exceptions are made for guide dogs and similar but I wouldn't expect a dog trained as well as a guide dog to bark in that environment.

DrNowt · 21/06/2024 10:10

My dog flew long haul with KLM in the hold, from Africa to Amsterdam ( where they have a big animal reception centre/layover hotel!) then from Amsterdam to London Heathrow, where they have a big animal reception centre also. There was a documentary about the heathrow centre (HARC ) a few years back.....they receive all sorts from flights, dogs, horses, snakes, rhinos! My dog may have met a rhino 😁
I swear I heard her bark on the plane, as I was on the same flight

I was very impressed with your knowledge, but I was even more impressed with their knowledge. You two could have had a really interesting discussion that would have been really informative for the rest of us, shame you decided to take offence.

MorrisZapp · 21/06/2024 10:12

Me too 😊

The only way that answer is improvable would be if it used my preferred pronoun, she. Admittedly my user name is ambiguous.
