To think I heard a dog barking on a KLM flight?

MorrisZapp · 21/06/2024 00:24

Is this possible?

I flew from Amsterdam to Edinburgh today with KLM. As the plane started to taxi before takeoff, I distinctly heard the high pitched yelps of a dog underneath us.

Do normal planes offer dog carriage in the hold?

@ReadthemAndWeep tbh you’re the one coming across as angry and rude. @RealOliveTraybake was giving information in a perfectly normal way.

I found @RealOliveTraybake post really interesting to be honest. Amazing when someone pops up with that kind of specialist knowledge.

I also found her post interesting and not rude.

They weren't angry, just factual.

pyjamalife · 21/06/2024 06:28

@RealOliveTraybake another one who thinks your posts are brill. Not at all angry or aggressive (unlike the poster who claims you are) and you kept your cool in responding to the fake allegations.

KLM may well take dogs on some routes but unless things have changed, Manchester is the only airport in the UK that receives live animals.

What happened to the animal centres at Heathrow and Gatwick? There used to be a documentary series about the animals that they received. Have they been closed?

Hatfullofwillow · 21/06/2024 06:40

Pilot's guide dog?

notimagain · 21/06/2024 07:12

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/06/2024 05:52

Agreed. Very interesting. I had no idea you’d be able to hear a dog in the hold from above. Mind you, you’d probably hear mine. He is notoriously LOUD!

Have to say did a bit of flying over the years and have never known dogs to be audible from the passenger cabin.

As mentioned the Airbus shorthaul aircraft are certainly notorious for producing a very noticeable rhythmic dog barking sound (due to the hydraulics), often happens on engine start or shutdown….and in these days of fuel efficiency it’s not uncommon to start the second engine, and hence get the sound, during taxi out. Boeing’s don’t do it to my knowledge, not sure about Embraer.

Be interesting to see what aircraft was actually in use yesterday.

Greencats78 · 21/06/2024 07:25

KLM website says pets in the cabin allowed as long as they are under 8kg

Yeah KLM allow pets in the hold, and in the cabin on some flights. I got to sit next to a very pleasant cat recently, he was the best plane neighbour I've ever had.

Did he have his own seat?

There is an ARC in Edinburgh, and I think there are actually 2 at LHR and LGW now as well. Pet shipping is a big industry. Ex UK dogs generally have to go in hold unless service dogs.

LakeTiticaca · 21/06/2024 07:42

Yes! I had the window seat, Monty in his carrier in the middle, owner had the aisle.

Ladyandherspaniel · 21/06/2024 01:50

I know this isn't the question but I often wonder how scary it must be for a dog to be in the hold of the plane by itself. And how traumatised they must be afterwards.

My dog is traumatised by the hoover so imagine how loud and scary that must be for them 😭

I couldn't personally do that to my dog.

I know it's a weird concept. Either holiday in the UK, go overland or leave your dog at home with a dogsitter or use a kennel. And if you are moving overseas, surely you'd drive/go overland. I know people don't like kennels but it's got to be better than stocking a live animal in the hold of a plane.

Although I know of someone who recently moved to Canada and took her dog with her. She travelled via the US but I have no idea what airline or type of aircraft she took :)

TakeOnFlea · 21/06/2024 08:47

The poster wasn't aggressive or rude. People are ridiculous on here. It'll be the hydraulics, you're not hearing a dog bark in the hold.

notimagain · 21/06/2024 08:48

For info from the likes of Flightaware looks like KLM did indeed have 737’s on the route yesterday, which lends weight to the idea the noise might not have been hydraulic system related (unless the newer Boeings have started barking).

It’s been a while since I was involved in this but AFAIK any dogs on flights into the UK would have to be in a carrier in the hold (though service dogs get an exception), and on many types it’s usually the rear hold for reasons various.

The cabin floor structure is fairly lightweight and there are air vents that run between the passenger cabin to hold, so whilst I’ve definitely not heard dogs in the hold barking on flights I know they have been carried I’d guess in some circumstances it might be possible.

Clearinguptheclutter · 21/06/2024 08:50

In continental Europe it is entirely normal to have dogs in the cabin

this was years ago but once on Swissair the cabin crew were actually playing fetch with a small poodle and a ball.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 21/06/2024 08:51

I flew from Cork last week and saw two dogs being loaded into the hold of the neighbouring Air France plane.

I completely agree. I didn't find it aggressive either, be honest. Just informed.

Onacuctustree · 21/06/2024 08:53

Many years ago we emigrated with our dog. On our return we were advised not to put the dog through Heathrow. Pet handling was better at Schiphol apparently. So he flew from Schiphol to Manchester. He was not traumatised by the experience.
I have no idea if you would actually be able to hear a dog bark from the hold. But it doesn't sound like it's beyond the realms of possibilities.

Hatfullofwillow · 21/06/2024 06:40

Pilot's guide dog?

😂😂😂

I'm certain it wasn't the hydraulics. But nobody else around me appeared to notice the yelps. Sorry to admit to the dog lovers that it did sound like a distressed, probably quite small, doggy.

Aircraft geeks are most welcome too, I find flying really stressful but I'd prefer to find it fascinating!

The "dog barking" sound is one particular to the A320 family, and is the PTU(Power transfer unit) - a reversible hydraulic motor that transfers hydraulic power without fluid exchange between systems. KLM mainline doesn't operate any A320 family aircraft, this was likely a 737 or embraer 190.

Yes they heard a dog.

Don't you just love it when a thread subject and a subject expert meet like this Grin

It was an older plane with three three seating but I must take a moment to praise KLM for their professionalism and great service. Most reassuring for those of us less experienced travellers.
