To think I heard a dog barking on a KLM flight?

MorrisZapp · 21/06/2024 00:24

Is this possible?

I flew from Amsterdam to Edinburgh today with KLM. As the plane started to taxi before takeoff, I distinctly heard the high pitched yelps of a dog underneath us.

Do normal planes offer dog carriage in the hold?

Nah, the poster was rude.
I offered an explanation to the op and they jumped down my throat with "facts" repeatedly, even though they had no idea what plane the op was on and my Google search proved them wrong.

They didn't want to be wrong and continued with their unproven "facts"

You are the only person being rude. Everyone else is just having a discussion
Maybe the fact that so many people have disagreed with you saying the other poster is rude should make you stop and think.
What they said was factual information delivered in a factual, calm way. You are the one getting het up and being rude.

I lived in the US as a teen, I remember domestic flights would have all the pets going round on the luggage carousel in their crates with the suitcases waiting to be claimed by their owners on landing.

The "dog barking" sound is one particular to the A320 family, and is the PTU(Power transfer unit) - a reversible hydraulic motor that transfers hydraulic power without fluid exchange between systems. KLM mainline doesn't operate any A320 family aircraft, this was likely a 737 or embraer 190.

Yes they heard a dog.

Great post!

Yes! I had the window seat, Monty in his carrier in the middle, owner had the aisle.

This would be an absolute nightmare for me on a long flight, as I'm allergic to cats and would have a horrible time with itching eyes, streaming nose and sneezing multiple times a minute.

I've taken quite a number of flights and never noticed a live animal being carried, so it hadn't occurred to me until now that this could be an issue I could be exposed to. Is there a list somewhere of airlines that allow live animals on board? And do any airlines provide passengers with an opportunity to register animal allergies (or phobias) so they can avoid seating them near pets?

Ironically I'm actually allergic to cats, but because I'm also motion sick I'm drugged up to my eyeballs on most flights and the medicine I take for motion sickness is also an antihistamine. So I was ok, more or less. I appreciate some allergies are significantly more severe than mine though.

When I boarded the attendants did inform me I'd be sat next to a cat and asked if that would be ok, otherwise they'd move things around, and I think they asked the people in the rows in front and behind too. So they do seem to make allowances for allergies where possible.

@RealOliveTraybake I found your posts interesting - good factual info.

@ReadthemAndWeep I found YOUR posts to be rude and confrontational. You're very defensive.

Sounds like you just don’t like facts that you yourself don’t know. Are you allergic to them?

Sound like you are glossing over the part where I Google the "facts" from the "expert" and they are not true 😂

Sanity is overrated, @MorrisZapp. The last of my marbles fell out of the bag years ago, and I can't say I have missed them!😂

As they saying goes - all the world is mad, save thee and me, dear - and even thee's a little peculiar!

I have family with a holiday home in Slovenia and briefly looked into going out for a few weeks with my small 4kg dog. My understanding was he could fly out of the uk in the cabin, but flying in he’d have to be in the hold.

TheLinguisticalGangster · 21/06/2024 13:24

How long can a dog survive, in an unheated hold at thirty-four thousand feet?

Yikes. More bitter than Italian amaro.

Roryhon · 21/06/2024 13:35

I was cabin crew at Heathrow for many years. We often had animals in the hold. I was long haul and they were always in the rear hold as it’s heated, so we could occasionally hear them on a 777 in our galley. We’d usually only hear them on the ground when the holds were open, so either they settled down in flight or the aircraft noise drowned them out. There was an occasion when a dog got out of its cage and wouldn’t let the baggage loaders unload the hold! I don’t know that I’d like my dog travelling in an aircraft. If I had a short haul trip I’d take them by land.

Ive only ever had three dogs in total in the cabin on my flights, but I loved it! They were so good.

I’m pretty sure they heat the hold if animals are flying. Though I did read of a case once where they forgot to turn the heating on and the lets didn’t survive.

But your Google search was incorrect. That poster explained the planes you mentioned have been ordered but aren’t operational 🤷‍♀️

I think I'll choose to believe the official klm website over a random anonymous "expert" on a chat form.

i would love to sit next to a cat on a plane!

Can cats go on planes ??? I’m severely allergic and have severe asthma would I need to let someone know now when booking as I would be in danger I didn’t even realise this was something I’d need to worry about !

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/06/2024 14:20

Yes, cats can go on planes, typically in the hold though.

You can check if a flight/airline allows small pets in carriers under the seats - if they do, a cat is possible. If not, then no cat (but dog is still a possibility as assistance dogs can travel on any plane).

qotsa · 21/06/2024 14:27

Ladyandherspaniel · 21/06/2024 01:50

I know this isn't the question but I often wonder how scary it must be for a dog to be in the hold of the plane by itself. And how traumatised they must be afterwards.

My dog is traumatised by the hoover so imagine how loud and scary that must be for them 😭

I couldn't personally do that to my dog.

Was just thinking the same 😮 bad enough when they are in their own familiar car on a ferry on their own. No way could I put my dog in the hold of a plane.

astarsheis · 21/06/2024 14:33

Yes I have flown pets with KLM. They go into the heated hold, so you might very well have heard barking.
Some owners give tranquillisers to the pets, but it is actually advised not to.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 21/06/2024 14:52

Both Air Canada and Westjet allow small cats/dogs in the cabin - they have to fit in a soft sided kennel bag.

There are also rules about certain routes in summer (too hot), in winter (very cold!) and about snub-nosed dog breeds.

As @Roryhon and others have said they usually go in the rear hold (on Longhaul aircraft such as the 777).

The Flight crew (pilots) get paperwork detailing what animals are on board, which acts as reminder to them to make sure that the appropriate hold is set to run at the correct temperature for the creatures involved.

When I was working it wasn’t uncommon to carry several cats and dogs (and other livestock such as tropical fish and some types of chicks) on an individual flight, and they’d be fine even on the really long flights like Singapore-> UK.

FWIW there are all sorts of rules about the exact way animals are carried and loaded in the holds, including factors like ensuring the loading team didn’t put natural “foes” in their individual containers in close proximity/line of sight to each other.
