We need the security services to shut the group down when they are carrying out what can be described as terrorist methods to influence govt policy.

Which "government" are they trying to influence? Parliament is dissolved, we don't currently have a government.

We have a government. It's a parliament we don't have.

My bad wrong term.

You've led a very sheltered life and clearly never watched the news of you consider throwing paint an act of terrorism.

Maaate · 20/06/2024 16:02

When cornstarch mixes with water it forms oobleck.

Great fun when you're in primary school. Possibly not so great for porous rock hosting rare or endangered plantlife

Beanieton · 20/06/2024 16:05

They're twats, and they're definitely turning people against probably the most important cause of our lifetime. However, to have them proscribed as a terrorist organisation is utterly ridiculous - it's a bit of paint. I think you need to get some perspective!

KatyaKabanova · 20/06/2024 16:20

Shakeoffyourchains · 20/06/2024 09:19

That works both ways, so you don't get to decide which groups are terrorists on a whim either then.

And it is illegal to allow oil to contaminate the environment pretty much everywhere, still happens regularly.

Hell, deepwater horizon was almost exclusively caused by corporate greed and a disregard for the laws and regulations that were in place, yet no one responsible will face prosecution over that, even though the environmental impacts of that are still being felt 14 years later.

Again. The law. Not a whim.
Decided by law (qv)

Wheres 'all lichen matters' when you need them

😂very good!

SeriaMau · 20/06/2024 16:23

It was a silly thing to do and won’t get them any support. It will wash off in the rain or with a hosepipe. Not sure there is much more to say really.

SeriaMau · 20/06/2024 16:30

protectoroftherealm · 20/06/2024 13:30

The best thing that could happen to these utter morons is for there to never be any mention of them anywhere. Don't publish it, don't film them, don't converse with them, don't report on it, don't even challenge them. Then they'll realise that they will get nowhere. They're simply attention seeking cockends using the pretence of being an activist as an excuse.

Of course. Don’t mention JSO, don’t mention protests, don’t mention climate change. Fingers in ears, all together, lalalalala…

protectoroftherealm · 20/06/2024 16:43

'Of course. Don’t mention JSO, don’t mention protests, don’t mention climate change. Fingers in ears, all together, lalalalala…'

Hahahahahaha @SeriaMau

Yes, because they're doing absolutely nothing for the cause. So, ignore them. They're a liability. You think throwing powder paint at Stonehenge is doing anything? What has it achieved? It's not even starting a proper conversation because all anyone thinks is 'nobs' and moves on. It isn't making anyone stop and think. When JSO is made up of grown ups with a logical protest that speaks to the public, with real arguments, who put forward real solutions to the people then they'll start to listen. Defacing anything is imbecilic.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 20/06/2024 16:45

Blackcats7 · 19/06/2024 20:02

Whilst I don’t think their methods are right I don’t agree that they are terrorists. They target things not people.

They're targeting people when they block the roads and won't let ambulances through.
IMO they are idiots who are not helping the environmental cause.
I can understand some of the younger ones, but some of them recently have been in their 60s FFS. Definitely old enough to know better.

blablasmthsmth · 20/06/2024 17:06

"Fewer people using cars would help a great deal, yes"

Well seeing as you keep posting statements instead of answering the question I'm going to take it that you do drive.
Even if you drive less often than you used to, it's so hypocritical to complain about the cars driving past stone henge.

AllPrincessAnneshorses · 20/06/2024 17:08

KimberleyClark · 19/06/2024 20:04

Stonehenge really should be off limits for these people. It represents the most remote human past of these islands.

No, it doesn't. Ring of Brodgar and Skara Brae are much older.

They're not terrorists, what a stupid thing to say. They are twits though.

AllPrincessAnneshorses · 20/06/2024 17:12

SeriaMau · 20/06/2024 16:30

Translation: I don't have a proper argument so I'll just assume bad faith and post an overegged pearl clutch.

The alternative to these silly demos in terms of fighting climate change is perfectly available. It's just much harder work and less instaworthy. HtH.

They'd be banned now under the government's new laws.

Yup. And we’d probably not be voting in the 4th. Sometimes needs must. Governments are failing to take action to protect us. People are already dying.

Noddedoffagain · 20/06/2024 22:42

5475878237NC · 20/06/2024 07:30

That's simply not true. They are backed up by the scientific evidence that we have a few years left before the tipping point is reached so it really is as urgent as that. Not for you, or many in the West, which is the issue really.

Absolutely. The science couldn’t be much stronger. And Governments across the globe are not taking enough action to protect us. What do we have left, after literally decades of peaceful campaigning and protest, other than shocking direct action to wake us up.

Noddedoffagain · 20/06/2024 22:47

Gladanotthwrteamonesomething · 20/06/2024 07:37

They could help the planet by not damaging things that then need cleaning or repairing costing more resources.

They raise awareness of their crimes. I don't believe they convert people to their cause though. Greta Thunberg talks and people listen. Throwing things like toddlers doesn't get people listening.

No but it got us talking about the very real and current threat of climate change just before the election so mission accomplished. Like or loath their methods, they are right. And actually, when there is such an enormous threat to us all, there has been decades of peaceful campaigning and protest and still this arsehole government allows more oil to be produced, the only sensible thing to do is rage rage rage. Direct action is the only tool left in the tool bag.

It’s not old enough to know better. It’s wanting to do whatever they can for their kids and grandkids and bring at a stage of life where being arrested won’t ruin their future. People are dying, while governments still seek new fossil fuel production. We have to rise up and fight. It’s the only sane option. Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away.

Climate change made US and Mexico heatwave 35 times more likely

A new report says extreme heat from May to June was driven by planet-warming emissions from humans.

We're talking about their actions that's true. Are we thinking of supporting their 'cause' though.

Glitterandglue · 20/06/2024 23:11

Isn't the point of terrorism that it incites terror?
If you're terrified of the thought of an ancient monument, or an old painting, or someone's plane going a bit orange for a while before it's cleaned up, you need to give your head a wobble.

They a bunch of absolute cunts and I hope those responsible are locked up. No group has managed to turn me off their cause more effectively.

100% this. ^

It’s not ‘their’ cause and it isn’t a case of whether you support it or not.

It’s fact that human created climate change is happening, we have known this for a long time, it’s happening quicker and more fiercely than predicted, people are already dying and getting sicker as a result. Our ability to grow food is already suffering and climate related migration is already happening.

That’s not a ‘cause’ to support or not, it’s a massive threat to our own existence.

Tut at them if you like but what are you doing about it? What do you expect those people that understand the true situation and see that governments are still putting oil company profit above our survival?

I see your points.

So they get in their cars and drive to stonehedge (protester questioned on tv said at least they didn't fly) to throw paint to protest.

Meanwhile a small number of super rich with their own planes ignore them. Did Taylor Swift even reply to their comments about her having a private plane. If they just targeted people that use private planes, Formula 1, the thousands of households using oil for heating (promoting use of solar and heat pumps instead) they just appear to destroy things. So people IMO turn away.

People have been and still are doing all those things too. And it has not landed. People still don’t get it.

So direct action pushes climate to the top of the news and sparks debate.

Like this one, and millions more on other sites, and in meatspace too.

Stonehedge damage didn't land either, it just annoyed people.

How about blocking private jets and preventing them from actually taking off. A smaller number of actions that stop flights in private jets, stop F1 races from burning thousands of gallons of fuel.

Throwing paint or other things at art, relives, etc is imo a turn off and makes them come over as idiots.
