Which Noise Annoys You?

ItsItchy · 18/06/2024 20:51

My husband walks around the house "singing". Well it's not really singing, it's just "la la la" to no particular tune.

I should be pleased he's happy but it annoys the hell out of me!

There's lots of noises I find annoying but I can cope with them.

The ones I CANNOT cope with and have to make them stop as quickly as possible:

Dp snoring (mainly because I can't sleep otherwise 😂)
Alarms/timers/sirens going off. Literally can't bear it, it's like torture!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 18/06/2024 21:27

My DH’s sneezing. He doesn’t just sneeze once - I counted 34 in a row once. I wish I was joking!

My DM’s sneeze when she’s had dairy! Sets my teeth on edge!

The sound of anyone eating or slurping but particularly my DM. Literally makes me so angry!

Mumteedum · 18/06/2024 21:30

God yes. Fuckwittering wind chimes. Next door has one. It's metal. It sounds like someone casting a fucking tinkly spell all the time.

It's the same pitch as my tinnitus and I hear it in my bedroom. THEY however can't hear it, they say. FFS. In which case why is it there?

I also hate whistlers especially in supermarkets and people with their phones on speaker.

BluebirdBoogie · 18/06/2024 21:33

All radio ads, particularly the Wren Kitchens one with shouting woman.

Dogs barking.
Dogs barking.
Dogs barking.

ItsItchy · 18/06/2024 21:33

Also my husband blowing his nose. It's disgusting. Go and do it in another room!

Mumteedum · 18/06/2024 21:35

Also some people on the radio make real clacky noises when they speak. Like you can hear their lips open and close. Urgh...

I think some people like these noises...is it called AMR or something? I can't bear it. Whispery clackyness.

And there goes the fucking wind chime again.

Sorry..sweary menopausal grump mode today. Thanks for the thread. It's the energy I was looking for 😆🙈🤬

Cherrysoup · 18/06/2024 21:40

Kids screaming. I don’t mean playing and being noisy, that makes me smile. I mean full on tantrum screaming. There is a family 2 down and the older girl used to make up/change impossible rules that her little sister had to ‘obey’ . Inevitably, they’d fall out and the little one would scream literally all day. We went round eventually and asked if they’d please stop her. The parents would not let them in for hours. I’m delighted to say they grew up.

And! My Dh swearing when he eg drops a cooking utensil or something really minor like a screw when he’s fixing something. I can’t wait to move somewhere he has an outbuilding to use.

Don't apologise, I think your rant about the wind chimes is my favourite ever 😁🤣🤣🤣

Constant noise.
My DH has to listen to the radio in the shower, whilst eating his breakfast and when he's not in work meetings. Then there is listening to videos or putting the TV on despite sitting on his phone. Why the constant noise throughout the day. I find I'm very sensitive to noise even though I'm moderately deaf and a hearing aid user. Add in the kids fighting/arguing every ten seconds and I'm in sensory overload

Why do some many men make annoying throat clearing noises? My dad & DP do this. They also sneeze loudly. Reading this thread makes me realise how common it is!

My brother, dad and dh all do it. The sneezing particularly grinds my gears. It’s like they’re trying to assert their masculinity by doing the loudest sneeze possible

HeresMyBreakdown · 18/06/2024 21:49

Rustling.
Rustling of bags of crisps packets/sweets/bakery goods whilst eating.
Rustling of empty bags once consumables consumed.
Rustling of any paper/plastic as a mindless task eg scrunching a piece of paper or turning pages

Devilsmommy · 18/06/2024 21:50

@Chocolateorange22 my dad wears a hearing aid and whenever he visits and all the grandchildren are there he very quickly takes it off because he says the noise is atrocious

NinaPersson · 18/06/2024 21:52

This whiny commentator on the Portugal Czech Republic match is grinding on me

Yes yes yes to kids shrieking and squealing! When I was a child we just weren't allowed to shriek (obviously unless there was an actual disaster happening) but in DH's family it seems to be how they communicated. He's passing it on to our kids, so sometimes I'm working from home and he'll be chasing the kids around the house while they squeal their heads off. Then I'm the worst in the world when I tell them all to stop it.

It genuinely makes me extremely anxious; I don't know whether it's sensory overload or just that I feel like they're distressed, but it's awful!

Katspin · 18/06/2024 22:00

In order of annoyance:
Other people's loud music - I find it so inconsiderate and have some past trauma from living in a busy area with street performers.
Other sounds from devices - like Tiktok videos or loud podcasts - in public.
My DM's eating noises. She also does the humming.
The sound of noisy DIY on a Sunday or after hours.
DP having the TV on during the day or in the morning when he's not even really watching.
Wind chimes (neighbours at my mother's house have a terrible one)

Exactly! Screaming meant we were dragged indoors, it just wasn’t allowed. I recall this was a lovely summer and my fil’s last ever visit to us. He was in a wheelchair and we couldn’t go outside because of the endless screaming. Really shit. The parents just didn’t want them indoors-fair enough-but mum was a sahm and should surely have occasionally poked her head out of the window to shush them!

Have you asked your Dh to stop winding them up? I mean, he sounds like fun dad, but the neighbours must get fed up. The neighbour between me and the noisy one was forever complaining about how they were identical in the house in the evening.

I've worn one for 30+ years now and the sensory overload nowadays is just insane. Problem is if I don't wear it I get frustrated with trying to understand everyone and it makes life even harder.

DH doesn't get how being a hearing aid user can make sound more overwhelming. He just assumes it brings volume up to what he and everyone else can hear.

fungipie · 18/06/2024 22:03

Electronic whirr/buzz at night

Blackbeardsvest · 18/06/2024 22:04

Any kind of vehicle engine idling, we seem to get a lot of cars/vans pulling up in the street outside and just sitting with the engines running and the vibratey noise from inside the house makes me want to scream, times that by 10 if they have music thudding as well! I'm autistic and struggle with noise in general though so appreciate I may be hyper sensitive to it Blush

Devilsmommy · 18/06/2024 22:04

@Chocolateorange22 I realised how sensitive hearing aids can be when me and my sister were whispering in the kitchen and my dad who was in the living room told us word for word what he heard 🤦🤣

I was somewhere the other day and one of the neighbours had the windows open-narrow terrace street-loud music playing. I’d go nuts. I HATE loud music, I find it hugely inconsiderate. I can’t imagine imposing on others in that way, it’s utterly selfish.

Fidgety31 · 18/06/2024 22:06

Any eating or drinking sounds fill me with rage . I have to eat alone .
Typing noises from a keyboard. Clicking of buttons on remote controls .
Shoes clacking on the floor / path

the list goes on
yeah I have misophonia - badly
