@cardibach

Multiple people on this thread alone have said they either can’t understand or don’t believe people who say they enjoy their jobs. It’s very common.

That’s not the same as saying they are boring for liking them. You aren’t talking about the same thing.

We haven't "got into" this situation. We are animals who need to eat and reproduce and most animals spend their whole lives looking for food and shelter and caring for their young. The good thing humans have managed is to share and disperse the roles in that, so that not everyone has to do all of it really inefficiently all the time. We don't all need to build our own houses or harvest our own grain.

There's a lot wrong with the current system because the efficiencies are mostly going to a few folks who own the means of production and the weird imaginary thing we call capital money, but I still can't see a system where people would just not do anything all day that produces value for the common good and yet have all the resources they currently enjoy.

Having said that I'd like to see a UBI, a load more personal food production and time spent repairing and less consumption and more creativity. I don't think each individual (me included) would particularly enjoy that more than working a 60 hour week because it would be challenging and difficult in different ways. But it might be better for all of us if everyone shifted a bit in that direction.

But this isn't about people individually being happier with some magic "less work!!" solution. We all have to have purpose and satisfaction in something and we have to find it which is work in itself. However if you don't do that work and live an unexamined life you'll end up not terribly happy anyway.

Oh I agree that purpose is an important part of a fulfilled life and that as a society we must still produce the resources we need.

The system we currently have however results in the majority producing the wealth for a minority - hence the alienation of labour and huge divisions in society.

I suspect we both think there must be a better way!

I often envy my friends and neighbours who don’t work ..they go on long walks, coffees with friends, yoga and Zumba classes, membership at the local spa, wine lunches, matinee shows…

However, where is their sense of purpose? Reward in doing a satisfying job? Helping others? A sense of achievement? Making a difference?

Perhaps you can have too much of a good thing when it comes to the lifestyle of others I sometimes envy…they’re not “giving back” to society which I think is a wonderful thing

Pelham678 · 19/06/2024 14:26

Thepeopleversuswork · 19/06/2024 13:22

@Pelham678

All the people who say they love their job and describe their job a bit seem to be doing jobs where they have some control over their workload and where at least part of the job showcases something they really enjoy (and are good at) - e.g. puzzle-solving, writing, helping others etc.

I completely agree: if you have no control or autonomy and you are doing something you hate of course you are going to hate your job.

But that’s an issue with your specific job or your industry or level. Not with work per se. I entirely understand someone complaining they hate a job like this but it’s quite a big jump to from “I hate my job” to “People who love their jobs are boring/control freaks/corporate automatons”. Which is the way the rhetoric often goes on here.

I think you can’t on the one hand say you hate work and everything about work if you have never made any serious attempt to find work you like or qualify yourself for it. The OP by her own admission has no qualifications so I am not sure what she expects?

Obviously it’s not an automatic equation that everyone should want work that requires highly qualified people. And plenty of people hate this work and fair enough. But I dont think you can write off all work as a boring waste of time if you haven’t tried to find something you like.

I'm not being critical with your post and agree with a lot of it but I think you underestimate how disempowered some people are and how narrowly their opportunities have appeared.

So taking myself as an example: my school was very traditional (I'm quite old) and the careers 'advice' was just all about traditional jobs: fine if you want to be a lawyer, accountant, teacher, doctor or nurse but crap if you don't. Both my parents did boring office jobs (their assessment, not mine) and encouraged me to be a civil servant, work in the council or become an air steward (so they could get cheap holidays). None of these jobs remotely suited my personality or interests but no-one ever stopped to consider what I might enjoy. Not only that but they all put quite a lot of pressure on me to do one of these trad jobs.

If you've never been encouraged to pursue your dreams it can be quite difficult to imagine finding a job you enjoy. I was also brought up to be very compliant and that made it difficult to break out of the expectations.

I didn't know any actors, directors, editors, musicians, personal trainers, psychologists, sports physios, self employed people, speech therapists, cafe owners, osteopaths, website designers, architects, podiatrists, journalists, gardeners etc, etc so it was hard to imagine breaking out of the mould. I know there are a lot of people who do but there are I'm guessing an awful lot of people with less confidence and drive who find it harder without external encouragement.

I tried going to a careers counsellor and an employment agency who both offered traditional jobs and neither helped me to work out what I was suited to (I'm not saying they should, but just that it's not easy to find the right kind of support).

When anyone is unsure about what they want to do and asks for my advice I start with their values, interests and temperament. For instance, no point in someone who hates hierarchy, structure and deadlines going for a corporate role. No point in someone who hates self-determination and uncertainty being self-employed etc. If you prefer being outside, what jobs facilitate that. If you are creative, are there roles that suit that etc.

@KarenOnTour I genuinely love my job. It's interesting, personally rewarding for me and makes a difference to society. I'm in no hurry to retire

Oh I believe people can enjoy and even love their job - absolutely

You've asked another poster about this and it seems a simple point to me.

In the current system, where I am required to work to obtain money, I am extremely content with the job I have. There is no other job I would rather do.

However, my preference would be to have access to money without selling my labour. Lottery win, trust fund, universal basic income etc.

Broadly speaking, yes @nopestillnotmanagedto

Why do I feel like I'm being set up for something?

@nopestillnotmanagedto . My issue, please don't take it personally. I try not to post on Aibu too often but was intrigued by this discussion.

I don't know anyone with one of these jobs either, that's not so unusual. I know warehouse workers, engineers, hairdressers, office staff and teachers.

They perhaps feel they are prioritizing themselves, giving back to themselves.

I get that helping others can give some people a sense of happiness which is fabulous - but so can helping yourself

zingally · 19/06/2024 16:29

I'm broadly neutral towards work tbh.

I just get up in the morning and go. I'm neither happy nor sad. It's just what the routine is, so that's what I do. I neither hate, nor love, my job.
I would say though, that I'm a pretty routine driven person by nature, so I like the predictability.

I really love my job and colleagues. I like holidays every now and then, but i wouldn’t want to be home all day, so boring!

I never understand when people say this. Not working (assuming because you don’t have to) doesn’t mean you’re locked in your house all day with no control over your life. You could do what you wanted when you wanted, wake up when you wanted, stay in or go out, it’s up to you. You’re a free agent, your own boss, how can that be boring?

Yes i can go in and out, but that is not all that i want in life. I like to be challenged intellectually, feel some pressure to achieve things, learn new stuff. I don’t really have a hobby that gives me the same excitement, maybe hiking in the mountains comes near it… but I don’t live near any mountains so it is not something can do every day. And i have kids to take care of so I am not free to completely fill my days with exciting parties and trips.

I really like the contrast of having a lie in on a sunday and having to get up early on weekdays. I’d get just very lazy if i could stay in bed every day.

I hasten to add that one of the reasons I love my job is that I work part time and mostly WFH, so my work life balance is perfect for me.

I am not the least bit interested in any kind of crafting though.

Hi.. just interested to know (if you don't mind sharing) what work is it you do from home?
I,ve never worked from home. Not a fan or working either but I know I need to work. Thanks
