But the idea that “working” is rubbish and “hobbies” are great is a red herring. Both are forms of activity, with more and less enjoyable aspects. There are many aspects of working that people might enjoy, even if the job isn’t precisely their
hobby. Someone could really enjoy attention to detail, or being outside, and go for jobs that facilities those things.

Exactly. Horses for courses. Some people’s personalities lend themselves to work, some don’t. It isn’t a reflection on your character or your creativity.

But you get this common trope on here that enjoying work makes you a boring person which I find bizarre.

I also think it’s quite gendered. No one would tell a man he was “boring” for enjoying his job. It would be celebrated or at best ignored.

The unspoken implication is that as a woman you are not really supposed to enjoy work because it takes you away from your “proper” place with your family.

Honestly, who gives a fuk what the implication is on mums net

I didn't like having small kids. Throw me in the stocks, goddamn it

This misses several points.
Not sure anyone has said enjoying work makes you boring. I certainly haven’t. I enjoyed aspects of my work, I just enjoy doing my own thing more.
Enjoying work is a completely different thing from saying you can have fun/not be bored/have a better time not working.
Nobody has told anyone, make or female, that they are boring for enjoying their job. I have seen not working described as boring though.
Nobody has suggested a woman’s ’proper place’ is with family. It’s been about doing our own thing, not switching paid work for others for unpaid work for family. I live alone. DC is an adult. I still prefer not working. Even though my job isn’t boring.

Because work takes you away from your own time, so you hate that about it.

Oh Let me offer my humble apologies for attempting to be friendly

Clearly I made an error

I don't know what you're not understanding. I hate the concept of work. But I understand its a necessity and so I must go out to work. I am fortunate though that I have a job I love, which nearly makes up for the fact I have to go out to work.

Do you often find it bizarre when people try to be friendly?

That is almost exactly how I feel. I do really love my job, but if i didnt have to, then I wouldnt.
Ive got probably two good years before i will be unable to work and it feels like a waste of precious time, really - which is sad

KarenOnTour · 19/06/2024 13:48

Honestly, those that say they would chose to work, if they did not have to, are bluffing

Nope. I would always work. Even if I became a billionaire overnight. I might not choose to work so many hours but I promise you that some of us like working.

Well that is interesting
I suppose Richard Branston or Elon Musk didn't retire when they reached the dizzy heights of riches.
The thing is, they are working for themselves. Most people are lining other peoples pockets and scraping by themselves and i can see why that may not be such a great option - not everyone has the same opportunities to become whatever their heart desired
Its a massive rat race

I would. Honestly. I'd drop down to 2 days a week, but shorter days. I absolutely love my Thursdays and Fridays, my job involves being out and about, and the people, staff, and public I work with in my Thursday and Friday locations are just lovely. I'd have 5 days off, do my Thur and Fridays and then knock off about 3pm for an extra long 5 day weekend again.

Sillysausage65 · 19/06/2024 13:54

Oo a two day working week ending at 3pm?
I am a convert

FarmGirl78 · 19/06/2024 13:55

In fact if I won the lottery I would either put funding in to develop the service I work in, to fund things we couldn't afford. Or I'd give up work and volunteer doing community stuff.

NeedToChangeName · 19/06/2024 13:55

I have a lovely family and friends but also genuinely love my job

Friday night / Monday morning, it's all the same to me

If you are unhappy in your current role, it's worth looking around to see if a change of direction might help

Bornnotbourne · 18/06/2024 21:22

I would love to be a fitness instructor. My mum, however, would kick off and ruin my life if I did it. So I’m just going to stick to my humdrum shitty life….. oh and kick ass in the gym everyday 😂
I never really understood men having secrets families, but I could completely get onboard with a secret career!

Your mum has had her chance. Don't live your life for anyone else. They won't ever appreciate it anyway.

Thepeopleversuswork · 19/06/2024 13:56

@cardibach

Multiple people on this thread alone have said they either can’t understand or don’t believe people who say they enjoy their jobs. It’s very common.

@KarenOnTour I genuinely love my job. It's interesting, personally rewarding for me and makes a difference to society. I'm in no hurry to retire
