Work is really important to me. I enjoy my job, I feel fulfilled
It allows me to have a comfortable life. It isn't my identity but it's part of me
I'd be bored stiff at home

PracticallyYesterday · 18/06/2024 17:25

One definition of 'work' is that 'you'd rather be doing something else'.

E.g. painting the walls of a living room would be work to a professional decorator, but enjoyable to a DIY enthusiast.

Of course, some people love their jobs even if they are not traditionally vocational - you hear of the occasional person who's still doing their part-time cleaning job aged 80. And some people are lucky/talented enough to turn their passion into their job - artists, sportspeople, actors etc.

But I think it's fair to say most people fall into the 'would rather be doing something else' category.

Pianofingers1 · 18/06/2024 17:25

I would definitely not be bored if I didn't work. I could fill all of my time quite happily BUT I'd need money to do it. I couldn't sit and do literally nothing.

In the meantime until I get that lottery win I feel v lucky I do a really interesting job I enjoy most of the time working for a company that I think is doing good in the world.

OriginalUsername2 · 18/06/2024 17:25

I don’t hate working but I hated being an employee.

When I hear people say they need to get back to work to feel “like themselves again” I’m just very confused. Are you just an empty shell?

DutchCowgirl · 18/06/2024 16:11

I really love my job and colleagues. I like holidays every now and then, but i wouldn’t want to be home all day, so boring!

Same here. Finding a job you enjoy and working with people you get on with makes a huge difference.

cherryade8 · 18/06/2024 17:29

Yanbu. But that's why we get paid for working, it isn't something we'd choose to do for free.

RampantIvy · 18/06/2024 17:31

I hasten to add that one of the reasons I love my job is that I work part time and mostly WFH, so my work life balance is perfect for me.

I am not the least bit interested in any kind of crafting though.

PunchyLunchy · 18/06/2024 17:34

I’m with you @KarenMorgan49672 and @ThreeTescoBags

Work is servitude to the system. The system that doesn’t care about you. And there is no end in sight.

Plodgy · 18/06/2024 17:38

I don't hate working per se but right now I absolutely despise working for the NHS and particularly some of the (non clinical/non expert) overstuffed overpaid meetings addicted beyond incompetent Muppet managers. I also loathe how much time goes on the commute when I could be actually having a life because our department head doesn't believe in WFH even when you're demonstrably more productive.

89% of people say Im not being unreasonable wow I wonder what senior management at most companies would say if they knew 89% of their staff hated working

It’s most likely biased as others who hate working are more likely to both click on the thread and click YANBU.

I would like to add too about changes in work- in our industry looking back say 20 years ago, there would be lunches out with clients, post work drinks occasionally, Photo shoots, evening awards and events- a lot of this has gone by the board in recent years for many reasons but particularly post covid with far less people in office based roles - now this may not matter if you have small kids but for those that didn't it was often a bonus/enjoyable bit of some quite mundane jobs-

Invent · 18/06/2024 18:21

I realise I need the direction of work even if it's just to know I hate it. I just get lazy with no work.

They’d ask if you like the paycheck 🤷‍♀️.

In the immortal words of Dennis Leary… “Life sucks Get a helmet“. It’s a great clip to google!

I work 4 days, i have 3 days for crafts, friends, family and home improvement.
More would be really boring to me. Friends are also working so they only have time for me in the weekends. My colleagues are nice, we are a close team.

I feel the same way. I enjoy my leisure time so much because it's a contrast from my working days. It's like the prospect of eating chocolate all day - it's a nice treat but I'd soon get sick of it if it was all I ate. It's the balance!

I also have a job that has very distinct busy and quiet times...nothing more satisfying than leaving the office on a project delivery day. I also really enjoy my colleagues.

Combattingthemoaners · 18/06/2024 19:07

The idea that we should enjoy work is a modern phenomenon. Historically work has always been a necessity to put food on the table. We are now told we should have “job satisfaction”. I am not convinced it exists in the form we strive for.

What is an easy job I can do full time with no qualifications?

What skills do you have to offer?

AgnesX · 18/06/2024 19:09

Not well-off enough to throw in the towel yet! It'll have to be illness that will drive me out.

89% of people say Im not being unreasonable wow I wonder what senior management at most companies would say if they knew 89% of their staff hated working

probably because 89% of senior mgt would rather be doing something else as well!

Grumpy12345 · 18/06/2024 19:15

Me too OP! Work really gets in the way of all the things I like doing. I can’t stand boring people who claim they’d get bored without a job…they really need to get some hobbies.

So true.

UnfriendMe · 18/06/2024 19:16

I like my job, I get paid well with a lot of flexibility. My partner also has a good job that pays well, we don't have kids and really don't have any money struggles, have regular holidays, buy whatever we want/need, can afford a nice house, nice cars, etc. That being said, if we were independently wealthy or won the lottery we would both quit our jobs tomorrow.

I don't think there are many people out there who would work if they didn't have to, unless they consider their job a calling and it's more than just a means to an end.

FknOmniShambles · 18/06/2024 19:16

I do enjoy my job and am proud of myself for getting here but fuck me I am tired. And I still have 25 years to go! If I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd be put the door like a flash.

PonyPatter44 · 18/06/2024 19:17

There's a really smug annoying saying along the lines of, "find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life". I think I'm pretty close to that these days. My job is very challenging and interesting, and feels like I'm doing something worthwhile for the good of other people.

Out if work I have plenty of hobbies, plenty of friends, a lovely partner...I am well aware how lucky I am. If I won the lottery, work wouldn't see me for dust, but while I have to work, I'm lucky enough to have a job that doesn't feel like working.

Despair1 · 18/06/2024 19:19

Not sure how you would pay your rent/mortgage/bills etc.
Work pays a salary that helps pay for those.
If you don't enjoy your job, find another one
