@StripedTomatoes Haha at work I got told £2k is an excellent salary and that they couldnt understand why people would work in a job they didnt enjoy and that everyone who comes to work in the morning should do something they enjoy

Recently became old enough to claim my private pensions, it's not a great deal of money but I could live on it.
I now have a slightly 'fuck you' attitude to any everyday grief I get at work.

Hateam · 18/06/2024 16:22

Welcome to the real world- it sucks.

I work 4 days, i have 3 days for crafts, friends, family and home improvement.
More would be really boring to me. Friends are also working so they only have time for me in the weekends. My colleagues are nice, we are a close team.

I had great colleagues and a fulfilling job. I still find doing what I want less boring than having to do what is dictated by the system. The things I enjoy doing I enjoy - I don’t get bored if I have more opportunity to do them. I do more of them, and diversify into doing more things I enjoy. It’s good if you can not hate work, it preferring it to pleasing yourself (money aside) is not something I can get my head round. (Unless work happens to be being a West End star. I could probs enjoy that more)

Just like a big chunk of the rest of the population then 😀

(Now semi retired) as you will be one day. I often felt fine at work, (Nursery School teacher loved all the children) My friend there as well. What I felt was compromised .Like half of me at work even when home! Can you get a different job? Maybe retrain?

EveningSpread · 18/06/2024 16:27

I love my job. Not all parts always, but mostly. I work in Higher Education, teaching and researching stuff I’m really interested in.

Most of us have to spend 40 hours a week working to pay the bills, which is why it’s so important to find something you don’t hate.

My DP has an active job and loves walking all day, while I love thinking all day!

KreedKafer · 18/06/2024 16:29

Whenever someone tells me they would be bored if they didn’t have to work, I instantly know we won’t be friends.

My job is all right. My colleagues are lovely. A lot of my work consists of writing and editing, which I’m good at and can do very well without a great deal of effort. I would still chuck it in there and then if I came into enough money to get by without working. My work’s all right but I can think of 90,000 other nicer things I could do with my time. Left to my own devices I never, ever get bored.

iwonderwhatsinside · 18/06/2024 16:31

I'm having to have this week off as parental leave because my youngest is recovering from surgery.

I love it. I love being at home getting the housework done. Love being able to do the proper school run so they're not in before/after school club 5 days a week. We're back home by 4 and actually have an evening together.

Honestly, if I could afford to not work I'd quit and do this forever in a heartbeat. Unfortunately as a single mum fuck all gets paid if I don't work Sad

KarenMorgan49672 · 18/06/2024 16:10

haven't had a holiday in 12 years

Time for a new job? I love my job too. I mean don't get me wrong, I'd 100% retire if I won the lottery but I don't mind what I do for a living!

Blackbirdsinthgarden · 18/06/2024 16:33

How old are you? Is it just you, or do you have a partner/dependents? Any chance of early retirement? I suppose, even if you could retire, you would still need money to pay your mortgage and bills. Could you downsize/get a smaller or no mortgage and just work enough part-time to live on? Dog walking?

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 18/06/2024 16:35

I spent 10 years staying at home, 2 of those with all my kids on full time school.

I enjoyed having time for me, sure. But getting back to work was a revelation and I do actually enjoy it and recently secured a promotion which I'm LOVING! Do I enjoy being woken by the alarm, no. Do I have days when I think "fuck this shit" of course, but currently I prefer working to not.

DH and I plan to retire in 7 years when we reach our 50s. I think having that end date helps.

89% of people say Im not being unreasonable wow I wonder what senior management at most companies would say if they knew 89% of their staff hated working

you don’t know what % of this is senior management 🙄

Same
I mean if I was absolutely skint I might be a little bored but still.. library books, TV, walking, exercise etc
Even over lockdown with shielding I was fine
With money? Never would I be bored! I would spend most of my time with horses, or playing netball or in bookshops or volunteering at the dog rescue, exploring new cities, outdoor swimming...

I think they already know!

Catza · 18/06/2024 16:42

So people say they hate work but they also give volunteering as part of the things they might want to do with their time when off work.... so... it's not working you hate, you hate your jobs. It's easily fixed. Find what you enjoy, train up, change up. The opportunities are right there.
I changed my career at the age of 37. I love my job. Yes, I have a diverse set of interests outside of work and wouldn't mind going to 4 days a week to allow more time for these. But I would never choose to be without work.
Yes, when I was working in unskilled roles, I wasn't massively inspired by my work. But that's what lifelong training is there for.

Chypre · 18/06/2024 16:44

I did my time sitting in windowless building near airport in the flickering blue light, tinkering with CRMs and repetitive emails and ever-broken excel master files. I have always hated it, that was absolute hell. Now I don't have to do it anymore. Still get this question from time to time - what do you with yourself then?... Well, Brenda. I am ALIVE. And that is enough for me. Now pass that ball, we only have court for 45 minutes.

They most probably hate working just as much!

I now work 3 days from home in a pretty low level demand job. It's made me a lot happier

YANBU but probably need a new job as it's not realistic to not work

What do you do now and why do you hate it?

Would fewer days and longer hours or more days and shorter hours be better?

Is it a long commute?

Could you wfh?

What do you love doing?

Justcashnosweets · 18/06/2024 17:16

Same OP. I've been working for 35 years and I've had enough. 😒 I would give it up tomorrow if I could.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 18/06/2024 17:18

With you OP.

Yes, but when I was working , I often thought how good it would be to have a lie in and please myself. That didn’t stop me giving my best at work.
