I hate working and would rather be at home or with friends and family

thats it thats the thread.

OP posts:
Nextweektoo · 18/06/2024 21:13

I don't hate hate my job, it can be rewarding, but I wish I was skilled in doing something practical and physical. Nevermind. I do look forward to pay day every month.

Peonies12 · 18/06/2024 21:14

I don’t love my job but I like using my brain and socialising with colleagues. I’d find not working at all boring. You have to make the best of it, we’ll be working a long time!

Emmeline1894 · 18/06/2024 21:14

Me too. Got a big career, incredibly fortunate it pays enough to not worry about bills etc. Not massively wealthy but enough for treats, holidays. Consider myself very privileged.

Recently bereaved and cannot believe I spend 40 hrs a week doing stuff I don’t give a shit about. I mean I care about the people, but I’d walk away tomorrow if money didn’t come into it.

Life is really short, and it’s later than you think.

gracekelpie · 18/06/2024 21:17

I love working, ALTHOUGH I work from home and am self employed. Used to work in retail and hated it. If you are your own boss it's a lot easier than someone telling you what to do, which is why I think most people hate their jobs. It's all about finding what you love and doing it for money. I absolutely loved writing at school as child now I write and get paid for it.

LaMadameCholet · 18/06/2024 21:17

I really like my job, I look forward to going in 🤷🏻‍♀️

cardibach · 18/06/2024 21:18

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/06/2024 21:06

@cardibach

Why do you need work to provide that sort of stimulation?

I don’t need work for that sort of stimulation, I need it for the money. I’m a single mother so I need to earn money to support my kid.

But if I am going to work for money I want to make damn sure it’s interesting and well paid.

Fair. Your post read as though that was your only source of those things.

cardibach · 18/06/2024 21:19

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/06/2024 21:12

@cardibach

Nobody is saying it’s dysfunctional to like your job. They are saying it’s a bit odd to think not working leads to boredom. There’s more to life than even the best job.

No one has said not working leads to boredom. This thread was started by someone who baldly stated they hate work and various other posters have piled on to say they also hate work and they don’t understand people who do like work.

Some of us are just saying enjoying your job doesn’t make you a saddo. I have seen people say a lot on here that people who enjoy their jobs are weird or don’t like their children or other forms of vaguely insulting stuff. Or the classic “no one on their deathbed wishes they had worked harder”. Which isn’t true.

Several people have said they would be bored if they didn’t work. Nobody has said enjoying your work makes you a saddo though.

SaintVitasShagulaitas · 18/06/2024 21:19

Maybe you are in the wrong job. Have you investigated other lines of work?

neverbeenskiing · 18/06/2024 21:20

I really like working BUT I'm lucky to have a job that I'm passionate about. I find it interesting and rewarding and it allows me a good work/life balance. I also really like my colleagues, we laugh a lot and look out for each other. If it weren't for those things I'd probably hate working too so YANBU.

No wonder this country is in a state, with that attitude!

It just feels like a rat race though, majority of the time.

Especially lately as we’ve had diabolical weather for the time of year.

Wake up. School run. Work commute. Sitting in pointless meetings about meetings. Awkward small-talk. Commute home/school run. Cool dinner. Shower bed. Repeat. That’s what life is like for a good chunk of working people.

Add all that what drizzly grey skies, cost of living crisis, struggling to pay rents and mortgages. Public transport is shit for a lot of people outside of London and big cities. Trains are constantly late or cancelled and overfilled so everyone is packed onto one carriage like sardines. There are so many cars on the road most motorways and A-roads are backed up at peak times. There is no such thing as rush hour, as it lasts for hours.

Honestly, is it really any surprise that a lot of people share the same attitude as the OP?

Motheranddaughter · 18/06/2024 21:21

I do enjoy my job.I enjoy the routine ,and it means I really enjoy my time off

Bornnotbourne · 18/06/2024 21:22

I would love to be a fitness instructor. My mum, however, would kick off and ruin my life if I did it. So I’m just going to stick to my humdrum shitty life….. oh and kick ass in the gym everyday 😂
I never really understood men having secrets families, but I could completely get onboard with a secret career!

KarenMorgan49672 · 18/06/2024 16:14

might go live in a tent on scottish mountains so I dont have to work

The coldest, most physically uncomfortable experience of my life was a summer picnic on a windy day in Aviemore. I'd reconsider if I were you, or just get another job. An indoor one, not located in the north of Scotland.

YANBU about work in general.

Farmwifefarmlife · 18/06/2024 21:25

Change jobs? There must be something you’d enjoy everyone has to work so might as well enjoy it! Pretty miserable life otherwise!

Mirrorspacetick · 18/06/2024 21:28

I enjoy my job. As a manager, I can' absolutely identify those who clearly don't enjoy working and do the absolute minimum. Such a shame that they don't consider their colleagues who then have to cover for them. Unfortunately, not everyone has a good work ethic and they are an absolute pain in the a** to manage!

DutchCowgirl · 18/06/2024 21:51

cardibach · 18/06/2024 21:00

Pretty much all of that I can do with my hobbies and interests at home. Why do you need work to provide that sort of stimulation?

I really need a little pressure, like a deadline. I can’t give myself a credible deadline for a hobby project. It doesn’t give me the same adrenaline.

Endless hobbying seems pointless also.. i really like to read and i like to paint. But the best time to read is when I go to bed early after a long workday. And the best painting is done on a sunday, before the new workweek starts. I just need the structure and balance my work is giving me. Just reading and painting all day every day wouldn’t make me happy.

I don’t personally do crafts. My hobbies are musical, so they come with built in deadlines and adrenaline. Maybe that makes a difference. I’m just much happier now I’m semi retired and most of my time is spent doing what I want, when I want.

DorisDoesDoncaster · 18/06/2024 22:03

what’s your boss like? I only ever hated a job when I had an awful boss. Now have best one ever

bringmorewashing · 18/06/2024 22:03

YANBU. I like my job, but even so, it's 5 days a week and long hours, it gets in the way of doing much else and I'm permanently shattered and stressed out. It's no way to live just to pay the bills.

I'm cutting down to 4 days a week from next month and then going on mat leave for 6 months. Seriously cannot wait! Not exactly a long term solution though!

Bluemonkey2029 · 18/06/2024 22:10

cardibach · 18/06/2024 16:23

I had great colleagues and a fulfilling job. I still find doing what I want less boring than having to do what is dictated by the system. The things I enjoy doing I enjoy - I don’t get bored if I have more opportunity to do them. I do more of them, and diversify into doing more things I enjoy. It’s good if you can not hate work, it preferring it to pleasing yourself (money aside) is not something I can get my head round. (Unless work happens to be being a West End star. I could probs enjoy that more)

Because, like being a west end star, lots of jobs allow you opportunities you can't get outside of work. I love my job, I work in schools (not a teacher), at festivals, in the community, in prisons. I love free time and have lots of hobbies too but I can't just waltz into a prison because I fancy a look about. I like the balance but yeah I'd be bored without the interesting opportunities work gives me.

Also I'm good at my job and it's something that receives praise (very customer facing and entertainment based) and rightly or wrongly I thrive off the praise and sense of achievement. Yes I can get that from am dram (I do that too) but the opportunities aren't as big/varied.

I think it's fine to prefer not working but I'm surprised you can't understand why some people would find it boring not having the opportunities work provides if they have an interesting job.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 18/06/2024 22:11

I’m with you @KarenMorgan49672 I’ve worked since I was 16. I’m now 48, with teenagers who seem to need me more than when they were little. I haven’t stopped. I’m bored of this crap 😳

She’s already ruining your life my love. Why are you letting your mum control you? It sounds like you need to visit the Stately Homes thread in Relationships.

CraftyGoblin · 18/06/2024 23:29

I quit my job and it's the best thing I ever did. DH earns enough and I started my own craft business. I could never be bored. I get to clean my house, have a nice garden, exercise, go to medical appointments, be here for my children. My biggest regret is putitng my eldest in nursery 9 hours a day when she was 3 months old and someone else witnessing all her milestones. I've stayed in education since I quit. We don't have luxuries that other people have. I don't mind though. I don't like holidays. I like weekends away in the UK (can't realistically take my wheelchair and equipment on a plane anyway). A luxury to me is that I get to sleep as much as I want to, watching plants grow from seeds and exchanging second hand books. I really don't care about having money.

BabyFever1345 · 18/06/2024 23:47

Well, YANBU. I also hate work. More so now when I'm heavily pregnant.

No way out of it though.

@DutchCowgirl if you love your job what do you do

I dont get people who enjoy working makes no sense to me

I’m game designer, love my job. I made FIFA, SIMS, etc. Now i move to mobile games. Never feel like its a job for me. Never feel like i’m working and i earn 85k. To have a nice job you do need a qualification or a degree though. If you want fast job with minimum wage most likely you will hate your job.
