To tell you not to go to Costa coffee in the Trafford centre

We decided to stop for a little coffee pick me up in the Costa coffee in next at the Trafford centre yesterday.

Mum went to order and I got a table. Every table was covered in cups and plates and used tissues. I managed to find a fairly clean one and sat down.

To be clear it was open!

Then I noticed a lot of staff on the left hand side of the shop all looking at something under one of the booths and trying to get sorting into a cup.

I heard them say 'I don't think that's a mouse I think that's a rat I saw it on one of the tables back there and then it ran under here' and then they closed the coffee shop to try and catch the rat

They must have managed to catch it as it was back open and serving food about an hour later 🤢

Just go somewhere else if you find yourself in next and fancy a coffee!

Yes we were being unreasonable to go into a Costa inside a next and expect a good coffee but we didn't expect it to come with a side of large mouse / rat

Yes YABU.

Rats are everywhere. You just don't always see them.

CharityBurbag · 15/06/2024 09:49

It didn't 'come with a side of rat' though.

They did the right thing, closed the store and got the issue sorted.

There are rats all over the Trafford centre, at all times, I used to work there.

PracticallyYesterday · 15/06/2024 09:55

YANBU, not because they had a rat in their kitchen (🎶what are they going to do ...) but because Costa coffees are an insane waste of money.

Crumpleton · 15/06/2024 09:57

While it's not pleasant at least they were trying to do some thing to resolve the situation.

Then I noticed a lot of staff on the left hand side of the shop all looking at something under one of the booths and trying to get sorting into a cup.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your comment it must be pretty hard to catch a mouse/rat using a cup, I'd imagine it wouldn't hang around, it would scurry off.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 15/06/2024 09:58

Im afraid there are rats all over the Trafford centre and the city.

BellaDelBosco · 15/06/2024 09:59

As someone with a phobia of those things and who goes to the TC now and again I so wish I had not opened this post.

Yes this is a Trafford Centre problem and not a Costa problem to be fair to Costa.

Yup!

YANBU <runs away screaming >

You should see the rats running around the delivery areas of most supermarkets! Rats are everywhere as long as it's not on your food and they washed their hands it's a non issue. It's only because you can see it that's it's given you a bad feeling, those coffee beans have travelled a awful long way there's no chance they have been kept away from rats the entire distance, same with the giant bags of flour that the cakes would have been made from.

Bjorkdidit · 15/06/2024 10:05

DP used to work for a waste contractor where his job was to collect bins from restaurants, cafes, takeaways etc.

When he was being shown the route and what to do, his colleague told him that he had to go in, give the bin a kick and step back to wait for the rats to run away Grin

9quidicecream · 15/06/2024 10:06

There’s rats and mice everywhere

ExtraOnions · 15/06/2024 10:09

They have had micein the Traff before .. they were upstairs in the food court. Places were shut down, and problem dealt with. It’s one of those times things.. it could have walked in through an open door as long as they close down and deal with it.

TBH .. I’m baffled how it got there.. Costa in Next is up above the first floor. Plus you can really shut it down as it’s straight into the shop ..

Yes have seen rats in the car park of my local Tesco Extra.

Longma · 15/06/2024 10:13

I don't think it is a Costa issue.
Rats are everywhere where lots of people are.

Most shopping centre has issues with rats. There is a lot of food waste which attracts them, as do,city centres full of shops, restaurants and bars.

I know Meadowhall near Sheffield also has rats seen, as does the city centre.

At least the Costa you visited was sorting the situation out - they temporarily closed, sorted it, cleaned and reopened.

KnickerlessParsons · 15/06/2024 10:48

If one cafe in the Trafford Centre has rats, they all have.

Username056 · 15/06/2024 10:52

Used to go to Costa in the Arndale in Manchester years ago early on my way to work. In those days (don’t know what it’s like now) it was just chairs and tables and counter in an open space so not behind doors Saw a mouse run across the floor. Staff said they are everywhere in the Arndale.

Frasers · 15/06/2024 10:54

Mice and rats are everywhere op. There is little to nothing they can do to sort it, it is not something they did to cause it either.

NoSnowdrop · 15/06/2024 10:54

I’d advise anyone against going to Costa anyway as they promote mutilation of healthy young women and they’re misogynistic. Plus their coffee is fucking rank.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 15/06/2024 10:55

Have you seen the number and size of rat bait boxes around supermarkets and fast food drive thrus ?

There’s a saying that you’re never more than 5(?) foot from a rat. Shopping centres are going to have plenty of them - especially in urban places so yabu to think that a coffee shop will never have pests.

BeaRF75 · 15/06/2024 10:56

A mouse wouldn't bother me, but I'd never go to any branch of Costa because their coffee is disgusting, cold & slimy 😂

FluffyJellyCat · 15/06/2024 10:56

You would be insane to try to catch a rat in a coffee cup and I'd wager its also impossible. Some are over a foot long for a start with the tail

Rats are everywhere. Ask any builder who works in London shopping centres what they have seen in the basements.

All these large buildings have monitoring stations and try their best ( I hope). I hate wild rats, we have a few get into our various houses in the countryside, in a large town, in a village. One was bigger than a black bin lid. It was caught and hanging over the sides of the bin lid in the photo taken by the person who caught it

BeaRF75 · 15/06/2024 10:57

Mouse or rat, to be fair - they're very common.

Sunnnybunny72 · 15/06/2024 10:59

Wouldn't bother me.
We have them in our garden (fields).
