To tell you not to go to Costa coffee in the Trafford centre

We decided to stop for a little coffee pick me up in the Costa coffee in next at the Trafford centre yesterday.

Mum went to order and I got a table. Every table was covered in cups and plates and used tissues. I managed to find a fairly clean one and sat down.

To be clear it was open!

Then I noticed a lot of staff on the left hand side of the shop all looking at something under one of the booths and trying to get sorting into a cup.

I heard them say 'I don't think that's a mouse I think that's a rat I saw it on one of the tables back there and then it ran under here' and then they closed the coffee shop to try and catch the rat

They must have managed to catch it as it was back open and serving food about an hour later 🤢

Just go somewhere else if you find yourself in next and fancy a coffee!

Yes we were being unreasonable to go into a Costa inside a next and expect a good coffee but we didn't expect it to come with a side of large mouse / rat

I love rats. They should have a rat cafe instead of a cat cafe.

Neptunesgiraffe · 15/06/2024 16:32

Which Costa was it? I can think of 3 at the Trafford Centre.

Livelovebehappy · 15/06/2024 17:00

Someone I know who used to work in a supermarket warehouse told me to always give tins and packets a wipe before putting them in my cupboard, as there were literally dozens of rats running across them, peeing, 24/7. 🤢

You realise that rat didn't come in on its own, run straight to Costa and back out. It & it's little rat friends will have been in a lot more eating places than just Costa

At least Costa know & are doing something. Other places will probably be oblivious

YANBU, not because they had a rat in their kitchen (🎶what are they going to do ...) but because Costa coffees are an insane waste of money.

Beat me to it...

PithyLion · 15/06/2024 17:58

I have not gone into a costa since they used double mastectomies in their advertising

lawnseed · 15/06/2024 17:58

The poor rat. It just fancied a cup of poor quality coffee and a stale cake, both over priced.

ConsideringNC · 15/06/2024 17:59

Wouldn't bother me at all. Rats are everywhere.

Sorenips11 · 15/06/2024 18:02

I've worked in some of the poshest restaurants all over London. They all have rats, mice, and cockroaches. I believe if the restaurant is in a listed building then the rules are different regarding pest control. It's impossible to eradicate them entirely. As long as food is covered and precautions taken then you'll be fine.

For God sake you're being totally unreasonable OP.

The staff were clearly busy trying to catch a rodent, which is probably why the tables hadn't been cleared.

Infestations happen in businesses and homes around the world 🤷‍♂️

They do have a rat cafe or they did in York x

DP used to work for a waste contractor where his job was to collect bins from restaurants, cafes, takeaways etc.

When he was being shown the route and what to do, his colleague told him that he had to go in, give the bin a kick and step back to wait for the rats to run away Grin

My husband does the same with our compost bins

Soontobe60 · 15/06/2024 19:15

How did they actually close it though? Isn’t it within Next, not a seperate unit?

There was a pop-up rat bar in San Francisco!

I’d have been in my element.

Aaaaah! Amazing.

Glad these are becoming a thing (so long as the ratties are happy, of course).

SleepingStandingUp · 15/06/2024 19:28

So a coffee shop had a rat in, they closed the shop long enough to catch it and clean down, and now you want to name and shame it so no one goes in there
Well you're rational. Not.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 15/06/2024 19:30

If you use a special light you will see their peepee everywhere in public places

And probably your workplace too

Flatulence · 15/06/2024 20:17

Hate to break it to you, but lots and lots of catering establishments have pests. Pests are attracted to food sources.

The issue isn't when a place has pests - it's how they manage them and ensure they're offering a hygienic environment for food prep, storage and service.

One mouse (it almost certainly wasn't a rat - they're surprisingly massive) wouldn't bother me at all. I'm more concerned that they're not keeping on top of cleaning the tables.

Wisterialily · 15/06/2024 20:28

You are never more than 6ft away from a rat! 🐀

Afternoonteavirgin · 15/06/2024 20:39

Just in case you havant got the message yet, rats and mice are everywhere. Largely our fault as humans, for leaving so much sh1te lying around.

I'd never go in a Costa though. Pointless places and wholly unethical to boot, unless I had some sort of emergency.

The ones we keep as pets are awesome. I'm with your idea. We went to a cat cafe and the cats were trying to steal the food mainly. Better than a normal cafe or coffee shop still.

I remember a friend telling me to wash cans of pop before drinking from them because rats and mice run along them in the warehouses 🤢.

blushroses6 · 15/06/2024 21:14

They’re everywhere unfortunately. Last time I went to Zizzi, I watched a mouse run along the seating bench.
