DH, Anita Rani and the see thru dress

Going to a ball soon, and I want to wear something lovely, also fashionable.

I was looking at more transparent dresses, as they seem to be in and I definitely have the figure for this. I am 46.

DH said it's all inappropriate. He's never really been fussy about me looking sexy before, he has always liked me to look classy, I call it Princess of Wales style.

So I said, what about Anita Rani, she is my age and looked amazing. "Let's see" he said, "I have always thought she is beautiful". So he looks at the photo for a while, says nothing about her, but says I should not wear something like that as it would be sad.

So, AIBU, or do you need a divorce like Anita to wear what you want at 46?
She has credited her divorce as the catalyst for wearing this, and I think she looks amazing frankly!

I’m sorry but I don’t think it looks good on Anita Rani and she’s got a great body. I don’t think it’s suitable for a ball either. I’m all for wearing what you want and I suppose if you want to wear something similar then it’s totally up to you but since you asked I don’t think it’s amazing, lovely or fashionable.

It doesn't even look flattering, more like frumpy underwear.

She's let herself down big time, when she could have worn something really stylish to show off her figure.

I think the thread might have gone differently if you’d linked to a different dress, given that you say you don’t want to wear that one. Because that dress is HORRIBLE. The depressing beige-ey pink. The obviously unnatural fabric. The big plastic y scratchy looking sequins. The cut and drape, as a PP said, like a dirty old net curtain. Go as Vivienne Westwood or Liz Hurley as you like, but wear something NICE.

Sorry they’re not sequins are they, they’re nasty little beads like on a kid’s toy handbag - anyway point stands, impression is OMG ( in a bad way).

You are an adult woman, you can wear what you damn well please & makes you happy. You want to wear a similar dress with some biker boots? Go for it! Even if you don't have the figure but would be happy in the dress - WEAR IT!

I feel this has the same net curtains over control underwear vibe. Not sure it's an improvement.

It's at least in a pretty colour, and with an attractive pattern. Rani is a beautiful woman but the dress looks like it's completely pilled all over and the colour is dreary, although that can't stop her looking amazing.

If you've got the confidence, then go for it. It's people that try to wear something risqué but lack confidence and end up having the dress wear them that makes everyone feel slightly awkward in these situations. Yes people will judge but if you're happy wear it (although as you say, not the same dress as Anita as that’s a weird colour & shape wear combination and it's that which lets her down rather than the transparent style)

I don’t like that look and can see that a very young girl might want to wear it but have no idea why a 46 year old would dress like that.

Looks like something Kanye West would get his girlfriend/wife/zombie puppet to wear. It would look OK lined but there are so many gorgeous dresses out there to choose from, why not get one that draws attention to you in a good way ?

The garment looks grim & reminds me of those bad dreams where you realise you are naked in public.
A see through panel or 2 might be ok but completely transparent and closely resembling nakedness is weird and cringe inducing.

The Princess of Wales would not be seen in an ensemble that looks like bra, knickers and a giant condom (with the possible exception of that university fashion show dress, bearing in mind she was then about 18 and had no other half to embarrass .)

You are far from 18 OP and it would look completely tragic. There is a difference for celebrities in that they are not really trying to look nice, but rather are desperate to get column inches, which is sort of part of the job. Anywhere but the red carpet you’d look deep ( very, very deep) in the grip of a midlife crisis and your DH is being rightly protective of you.

I wouldn't have said it was suitable for a ball, but have never been to a school ball so maybe they are more relaxed? If it's black tie, I would say it's unsuitable.

Frankly I think it looks awful on her.
