DH, Anita Rani and the see thru dress

Going to a ball soon, and I want to wear something lovely, also fashionable.

I was looking at more transparent dresses, as they seem to be in and I definitely have the figure for this. I am 46.

DH said it's all inappropriate. He's never really been fussy about me looking sexy before, he has always liked me to look classy, I call it Princess of Wales style.

So I said, what about Anita Rani, she is my age and looked amazing. "Let's see" he said, "I have always thought she is beautiful". So he looks at the photo for a while, says nothing about her, but says I should not wear something like that as it would be sad.

So, AIBU, or do you need a divorce like Anita to wear what you want at 46?
She has credited her divorce as the catalyst for wearing this, and I think she looks amazing frankly!

Naw, jist naw🤔

AppleStruddle123 · 15/06/2024 15:41

The cut of this dress does now favours for AR.

it makes her look like she has no waist, rectangular and like boobs pushed up on a shelf.

it’s not sexy IMHO and she looks uncomfortable herself!

astarsheis · 15/06/2024 15:42

I agree with you...she does look amazing. Classy not and I don't think even particularly sexy.
I'm not a fan of the look even on celebs. Was it Rihanna did it first a few years ago when pregnant?
You will find something much classier and sexier other out there than that particular look.

NoraBattysCurlers · 15/06/2024 15:42

Do posters really think this thread is for real?

What does one wear to 'a school ball, at a private school to boot, and amongst the most expensive in the country'?

Its main goal is to have everyone mock Anita Rani for a laugh.

Starzinsky · 15/06/2024 15:43

It's not in, or classy.

CandidHedgehog · 15/06/2024 15:44

The thing is, the OP genuinely seems to think ‘glamour’ means synonymous with ‘glamour model’, i.e. lots of skin showing.

I’m wondering if the invitation has actually used the word glamour and the OP has just totally misunderstood. Otherwise, I can’t understand how she has got it so wrong. Is this the first school ball she’s gone to? If not, surely she must realise that dress would be wholly inappropriate?

Or the OP is Anita’s publicist making sure to get her name out there - bearing in mind a lot of people have been complimentary of her if not the dress, it might be a good way to recover a misstep of a rather dodgy dress.

very sad!

DodoTired · 15/06/2024 12:52

OMG ESPECIALLY don’t wear that if it’s a parents ball at the uber posh private school 😱

you’ll kill all your parent relationships and networking as people will think you are tacky and have no class. Even if there will be foreign some pupil's’ parents ridiculously dressed you don’t want to be sneered at behind your back. British posh are super judgey.

you need old money glamour to fit in, not red carpet Z list celebrity glamour

Jeez, this sounds like an utterly horrendous social circle to move in. I just could not be bothered with all the unspoken rules and judgement. Live and let live!

I don't move around like that!

Also the pp who suggested its like a work networking event and to protect my family brand! F that, I don't have a job for a reason!

Even the Princess of Wales would look terrible in this.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/06/2024 16:03

That really is a horrible dress, it looks neither good nor expensive. The other thing is, Anita Rani is famous, moves in that circle and there's a cachet with that. If you're not in that realm then I think you would look seriously out of place.

Your husband is accompanying you and he does get a say. I'm sure he's wanting to be proud and showing you off but the way you post doesn't sound very nice. It's almost as if you're putting two fingers up at him. That's how it comes across to me anyway.

If you have a good figure then the dress world is your oyster, why not take a friend and go on the dress hunt for one that does ring all the bells and won't result in people laughing at you and talking behind your back. It matters. If not to you then it will to your husband and children who will get to hear it.

Find a fantastic dress and feel incredible in it because it suits you not because someone from the telly has worn similar.

Clarabell77 · 15/06/2024 16:06

Tacky as hell. Your husband is right.

@DontShow I hand on heart don't think it's sexy in the slightest. Totally agree she ( her face) looks lovely but the outfit in my opinion is hideous

SummerSnowstorm · 15/06/2024 16:08

It's like many red carpet styles, they're a novelty on celebrities but in real life look ridiculous

Anita looks gorgeous in anything though.

Serendipity12 · 15/06/2024 16:13

And here we see the difference between money and actual class perhaps? Hilarious post!

piningforautumn · 15/06/2024 16:14

Sorry, but that dress is just ugly (imo). I don't see the point in transparent clothes (especially when they always seem to look awful), and of course most husbands/partners won't be happy with their wife wearing a transparent dress around other people. It's hardly surprising. There are things I wouldn't want DH to wear in public, and I'd be unimpressed if he didn't care what I thought.

A 'conspiracy theory' is a bit of a reach, even for you @CandidHedgehog.

A bored OP, morelike.

Omg, it's not naice enough to be a posh wife, just giving cheap shag? Wow

You nailed it.

You can be hot and have class, or you can be hot in a more.. tacky way to be polite.

DontShow · 15/06/2024 16:20

To me, this is tacky and revealing.

A dress that shows but doesnt show any bare skin is, imo wearable and sexy.....

It's nothing to do with age.

If dh wanted to go to a ball in his underwear I'd refuse to go with him.

kingtamponthefurred · 15/06/2024 16:22

Trying too hard is never a good look.
