DH, Anita Rani and the see thru dress

Going to a ball soon, and I want to wear something lovely, also fashionable.

I was looking at more transparent dresses, as they seem to be in and I definitely have the figure for this. I am 46.

DH said it's all inappropriate. He's never really been fussy about me looking sexy before, he has always liked me to look classy, I call it Princess of Wales style.

So I said, what about Anita Rani, she is my age and looked amazing. "Let's see" he said, "I have always thought she is beautiful". So he looks at the photo for a while, says nothing about her, but says I should not wear something like that as it would be sad.

So, AIBU, or do you need a divorce like Anita to wear what you want at 46?
She has credited her divorce as the catalyst for wearing this, and I think she looks amazing frankly!

What a funny thread, see through ball gowns and husbands who know who Anita Rani is, you have a very different live to mine 😂

Edited

Eh? Do you think men don't watch a wide variety of TV shows, just like women do?

nothing is "going on with me" other than decade after decade of watching teenage girls buckle under the societal expectation that they smear their faces with utter crap in order to feel acceptable to be seen out.

it is heart breaking.

I have never worn make up in my life, and never will, and obviously am far happier and healthier and richer and have more time because of it.

It is heart breaking though, to see so many teenage girls look around them and take on the belief that they HAVE TO, and people like this woman, going around in public ever day with her face completely covered in shit like this are contributing to that belief.

and any woman saying this is "beauty" is also contributing to this misogynistic oppression

Gosh, you're very busy being angry today 😁

Or take inspiration from Lewis Hamilton and your husband could also wear a see through dress/skirt/whateverthisis

Bless, he just got tangled in his Nana’s net curtain in a mad rush to not miss the Uber driver.

I think this thread will end up on Mailonline.

Wear what you want OP. If you want to wear a swimsuit to a fancy ball, who are we to judge?

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/06/2024 13:07

Reminds me of Kim K.

gruberandassocs · 15/06/2024 13:09

What is your dh wearing? If it's a black leather kilt and matching eyeliner then crack on with what you feel comfortable in. If he is wearing a dj then maybe dress for the occasion.

peachesarenom · 15/06/2024 13:12

Personally, I think Anita Rani has looked better but that might be because I'm a fan of brighter colours.

I think I would love an occasion to wear a sexy gown, especially now I'm in my 40s and wouldn't mind a bit of sheer.

For me, the bit I don't like is the swimming costume element, maybe a small slip so it looked like it had a mini skirt ending if you know what I mean? I'm not a fan of crotch displays and VPL.

Have you considered a low neckline and daring split combo? Big earrings are in and would go brilliantly with a low neckline x

Icantpaint · 15/06/2024 13:13

Women (and anyone else for that matter) can wear what they want. Totally up to them and no one else’s business

just because you can doesn’t mean you should

Happyher · 15/06/2024 13:13

It looks awful! Do you really want all the pervs looking at you

DemBonesDemBones · 15/06/2024 13:15

Massively inappropriate for a ball, I'd be surprised if you weren't turned away at the door. And I'd say the same to a bloke thinking about wearing see a through tux.

Garlicker · 15/06/2024 13:15

The go-to place for flashy exhibitionism is Oh Polly They're also quite cheap (and some would say they look it).

I can't help wondering if any menz who laughed in front of you/other women would have had a different reaction on their own/with other men.

Sorry, but some men like a woman who struts around with not a lot on and think she looks good.

Is there a particular parent or teacher you're hoping will enjoy the view? You're clearly not doing it for DHs gaze, as he doesn't like it so who is it? Are you trying to titillate him or get some action in the art room?

ladyofshertonabbas · 15/06/2024 13:16

She looks great, but she’s worn it to be photographed for the press, not to a ball full of ‘norms.’ It just doesn’t fit for your event!

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 15/06/2024 13:17

I wore a body con black dress with a sheer dress over the top. I’m 44 and don’t have the figure . 😂😂 but I was going to an indie gig and it was a dress not a leotard.

You mean they wouldn’t say anything to her face. That’s very U indeed.
what they will think about that or say behind her back in private is another matter

1mabon · 15/06/2024 13:17

Don't be ridiculous you simply cannot wear a transparent frock even if you have a fabulous figure, you would be laughed out of the wedding and people would be talking about you forever more.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 15/06/2024 13:18

@DontShow it's not about wearing what you want, rather than what your husband likes it -of course you should wear what you want. People saying don't wear it don't give a monkey's what your husband thinks, they are saying it's an awful look on anyone, and totally unsuitable for the occasion, which is why you shouldn't wear it.

StikItToTheMan · 15/06/2024 13:18

She looks bloody awful. And she'd have looked awful whether she was 46 or 26.

runningonberocca · 15/06/2024 13:18

Even she manages to look ridiculous in that outfit. Just why? If you want to show off your figure wear something fitted and beautiful

Garlicker · 15/06/2024 13:19

At the other end of the pay scale, there's this insanely exhibitionist DESIGNER dress, reduced to a mere £1,380.

op great dress, fantastic for a big birthday or something more intimate in terms of the crowd.

Ball at child’s school? - I think not. You’d be talked about a lot, unfairly but none the less. I wouldn’t want that for my kids.

Feminist utopia is yet to come.

That first one reminds me of this…

If this is real and you want to wear it, wear it. I personally think wearing see-through clothes is the opposite of ‘Girl Power’, but that’s irrelevant because we live in a free country and women should be able to wear what they like. I wore sheer tops that showed my bra as a student and didn’t care. Albeit not to my child’s school!
