DH, Anita Rani and the see thru dress

Going to a ball soon, and I want to wear something lovely, also fashionable.

I was looking at more transparent dresses, as they seem to be in and I definitely have the figure for this. I am 46.

DH said it's all inappropriate. He's never really been fussy about me looking sexy before, he has always liked me to look classy, I call it Princess of Wales style.

So I said, what about Anita Rani, she is my age and looked amazing. "Let's see" he said, "I have always thought she is beautiful". So he looks at the photo for a while, says nothing about her, but says I should not wear something like that as it would be sad.

So, AIBU, or do you need a divorce like Anita to wear what you want at 46?
She has credited her divorce as the catalyst for wearing this, and I think she looks amazing frankly!

Oh dear god no. You'll have well meaning women kindly taking you aside and asking 'did you realise we can see right through your dress??'.

Bollindger · 15/06/2024 12:04

If you really go in that dress, every person there will be giving you the side eye and laughing at you.
Your husband is trying to stop you being the joke of the ball.
Catherine wares so many amazing outfits for big events, show off your style not you undies, shine for the best reasons.

EatTheGnome · 15/06/2024 12:05

I hate her dress but if you were going to put your husband opinion in such high regard, why ask?

I have a few dresses dh hates and I wear them anyway. Why does it matter to you that he likes it? Why can't you just say "fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion but ive ordered it and I'm really looking forward to wearing it."

JFDIYOLO · 15/06/2024 12:06

There's nothing new - it's not unlike what women in Jane Austen's time would wear.

No knickers, under a very sheer dress which they would then wet so it would cling!

Well, I really like her dress and think she looks amazing. The pearl clutching is hilarious. I'm sure you would look amazing too OP. But I do think it's more celeb on a red carpet than a private school ball vibe.

theowlwhisperer · 15/06/2024 12:07

There's a lot of women here preaching feminism while putting a woman down for wanting to show her femininity just because it's not a way they'd do it.

to be fair, that's not showing your feminity, that's showing how desperate you are at best.

If I had a female partner instead of a DH, I would be not be amused if she wanted to wear such an outfit for a ball, even worst to a school event for our kids! It's embarrassing for them, and for us.

Kate in gold, most people will go "wow".
This dress? most people will go "oh dear..."

ThinWomansBrain · 15/06/2024 12:09

Your choice to wear whatever you like
His choice not to want to be seen with you wearing something so tacky.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 15/06/2024 12:12

That dress is vile and lacks any sort of style and/or class.
Normally, I'd say wear what you want but in this case listen to your DH. He has more taste in dress than you seem to have.

If you want people to be sniggering behind their glasses at you then go for it. Sorry those dresses are not appropriate for any age, any figure, anyone. It’s just shouts I want the attention on me.

went to a wedding were a guest wore something like this. She strutted around thinking she was the bees knees. Everyone was laughing at her. Sorry I know in perfect world you should be able to wear what you like buts it not a perfect world and people do judge

I can't help wondering if any menz who laughed in front of you/other women would have had a different reaction on their own/with other men.

Sorry, but some men like a woman who struts around with not a lot on and think she looks good.

Yes. They do. In private. Or in a strip club.

Maybe it looked better animated? While she was moving?

The still makes it seem an odd choice. Again that's only my opinion.

as in when she was really far away?

NoDishyRishi · 15/06/2024 12:15

Maybe look at Bianca Censori for some inspiration?

ZoomDoomZoom · 15/06/2024 12:16

People generally know where and what a woman's genitalia looks like, so why do you feel the need to show them? They've gone to have a good time at a ball, why do they need to see your tits and fanny? Does your husband not give you enough attention that you need validation from other men?

Crucible · 15/06/2024 12:16

Sorry OP that dress is not flattering at all, the bumps look like a skin disease. Probably cost a fortune and got her a lot of press. Maybe go with something with a sheer panel across the abdomen. Have a lovely evening

That's really absolutely unnecessary.

Oh well, if the men liked it, that really would change everything…

It’s a very ugly, cheap look imo, BUT if you wanted to wear that at another more appropriate occasion, more power to you, as you like it. A school ball, a posh one at that, isn’t an appropriate occasion, even without pupils there.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 15/06/2024 12:17

It looks like a voile curtain over a swimsuit. Don’t know who thought that was a good idea.
There are so many beautiful dresses, well designed and made why would anyone want to wear a nylon curtain.

Nellieinthebarn · 15/06/2024 12:19

I'm with the DH on this one, even at my slimmest and most attractive I would've left more to the imagination than a see through dress and big knickers, but it's all a matter of personal choice.

Surely there is a middle ground between Princess of Wales and A Bit Desperate Divorcee.

I've actually never seen her in a dress. But I do think she's sexy tbh!

Beachballplayer · 15/06/2024 12:19

In the nicest possible way I am not sure that would be the sort of thing you would wear to a private school ball. Red carpet yes school ball no!

Lifeomars · 15/06/2024 12:20

Looks like a stage costume for a musical. She has a good figure but that looks like fancy dress which in a sense red carpet wear is.

Summerose · 15/06/2024 12:22

OP, are you aware of the term "thirsty"? Well, Anita Rani may have gotten a divorce, BUT she looks THIRSTY as hell.

Thirsty = Desperate

MissSookieStackhouse · 15/06/2024 12:23

Your DH is right, it’s inappropriate. The dress screams ‘Look at meeeeeeeeee!’ Are you really that desperate for any kind of attention?
