To think the never ending criticism of Rishi Sunak is rooted in racism?

I know he's not perfect as none of our politicians are! But I do feel like people are out to trip him up over personal things as much as possible. This Sky TV thing is Rodin my opinion - Rishi has never claimed to have had a difficult start or to have grown up in poverty. The journalist pressed him for what he went without in order that his parents could afford his private education and he said he always wanted Sky TV and never had it. He was saying it in a fairly lighthearted way he wasn't moaning or complaining!

People can't seem to handle the fact that he's wealthy and also the puns on his name and the claims he's "unpatriotic". I feel a little bit of thinly veiled racism creeping in.

OP posts:

Not remotely. He's the one in the driving seat.

If you go back every previous PM has got a verbal hammering.

Unfortunately his colour will have made him a target in media. Personally, I couldn't care less.

OneBadKitty · 12/06/2024 16:24

Never trust a small man...

Absolute bullshit OP, stop race baiting. He gets the same scrutiny and ridicule in the press as all leaders/opposition. Do you think he should get special treatment for some reason? He’s in the most powerful position in the country.

As for being unpatriotic…. His billions are offshore, he is clutching a green card and has one foot out the door of the UK. Many of his policy decisions seem to have vastly inflated his fortunes at the expense of the UK’s interests. If the cap fits…

And let's not forget that he made much of his personal fortune - some of which is/was conveniently held in the Cayman Islands - while as a partner in a hedge fund. This particular hedge fund had a small but notable role in the near-collapse of RBS during the 2008 crash that required a £45BILLION bail-out by the government. He, and his colleagues, made a lot of money off that.

I don't mind people being wealthy as long as they pay their fair share. I am much more dubious about those who came out of a global financial crisis with their pockets bulging.

IClaudine · 12/06/2024 16:29

I don't think the puns on his name are racist. We've had puns before. Bliar, Bozo, Scameron, Liz the lettuce etc.

What Farage said was racist, of course it was.

IMHO People don't like him mainly because he represents the culmination of 14 years of Tory rule, won't accept the mess is the fault of his party, and because he fails to connect with ordinary people. Also he gets very tetchy and rude in debates and interviews.

But some people won't like him because he is a man of colour. Reform UK voters and some members of his own party, for example.

BucketBouquet · 12/06/2024 16:32

Yes, it’s all down to racism - and any criticism of Liz Truss was sexism, and any criticism of Boris is because people don’t like privileged people…

It couldn’t possibly be that they’re just shit, could it?

Finestwinesknowntoman · 12/06/2024 16:40

SeulementUneFois · 12/06/2024 13:42

Agree OP.
It's thinly veiled.

I disagree. I’m white so I will hold some bias and have blind spots but my issue is with his lack of moral fibre and his incompetence. Not his wealth or his skin colour. If he were a white woman or a hamster I’d feel the same.

He was asked, as someone wealthier than the king, how he keeps in touch with the experience of real people. He brought up ‘sacrifices’ and was then pushed to qualify that which he tried to dodge because he knew deep down he led a very privileged life.

The only answer to that question that I could respect and would make me feel that he’s a safe pair of hands would be;

’I have been really lucky. My parents had professional jobs and were able to prioritise my education and send me to a very good private school. I’ve never had to scrimp and save to feed myself or my family. I live a life of extreme luxury and I’m truly blessed. It’s hard for me to really understand poverty and what that feels like but I listen and learn. I want to make sure that every child has a good education and that no one worried about putting food on the table. I plan to …’

PupInAPram · 12/06/2024 16:41

I think he's awful, as is Liz Truss as is Boris Johnson. It's based on how they behave / actions in power / politics not what they look like. I think Sadiq Khan is great.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/06/2024 16:41

Doseofreality · 12/06/2024 13:46

I think it’s more to do with him being a cunt than his race to be honest.

😂

Yeah, he’s just shit Nowt to do with his colour.

No. All the other tory PMs have received endless stick also.

Valeriekat · 12/06/2024 16:44

Oh come on. It isn't racism.
It would be racist if we didn't critisize him.

tsmainsqueeze · 12/06/2024 16:58

I am white british and i loathe the tories ,i think Rishi is a clown and no better than any of them , but even though i think the colour of our prime ministers skin should be completely irrelevant i am proud that we have a british asian in that role.
Any british person of any race should be able to aim for the top.
So in response to your comment no i do not think criticism is rooted in racism in the vast majority of people.

Midge75 · 12/06/2024 17:01

Of course there will be racism, becasue racists exist. However, I don't think most of the criticism comes from racism - like most posters have said, he's just not done a great job (though somewhat better than some of our previous PMs). He's also terrible at the public stuff - TV appearances, talking with the public - it's just not his thing, so he gifts us all with more opportunities for criticism.
The Sky TV thing - he was asked if he had ever had to go without. Perfect opportunity to say something along the lines of "I completely understand that I had a privileged upbringing. I didn't have to go without much - the biggest thing I remember wanting but not having was Sky TV - which is hardly comparable to what many people are going through in this country at the moment. But I don't think my lack of suffering stops me from having empathy, listening to people and trying my utmost to ensure more people have everything they need in life"
or whatever - he could have said something that acknowledged his position but also reassured people that he cared. But instead, he seemed to be desperately trying to find something he could say he went without - and finally came up with Sky TV!
I always say I would have so much more respect for honest politicians - ones that admit they agree with certain policies of other parties, acknowledge where they come from or what they don't know, etc. I realise this would not stop them from getting criticism, but it would at least make me feel they were genuine. Even if I disagree with someone, I can respect them if I feel they are honest and genuine.

Midge75 · 12/06/2024 17:03

Oops, @Finestwinesknowntoman - didn't see your post and wrote something very similar! Sorry - wasn't copying!

Penguinfeet24 · 12/06/2024 17:05

Nah, he's just a prat.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 12/06/2024 17:07

Why do people keep trying to play the race card for him - doesn’t matter if he is blue, pink or indifferent he’s still a prick, not one of them have an honest bone in their body. On a slightly different note there are still lots of kids that don’t have sky because their parents need to put food on the table and not to be able to send them to private school- that shows how out of touch politicians are!

Boomer55 · 12/06/2024 17:08

Sunak is a self serving idiot. Nothing to do with culture.

Piddypigeon · 12/06/2024 17:10

It must be racism. I couldn't possibly think of anything else!!!!

BeverForget · 12/06/2024 17:10

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/06/2024 16:41

😂

Yeah, he’s just shit Nowt to do with his colour.

This.

He is worth billions, has access to money that is genuinely staggering, and when he is turfed out of office will decamp to the US where he will earn yet more money.
It is nothing to do with race, OP, I believe you will find that he is slightly less detested than dear old Maggie.
But she was a ginger...

Oceancolorseen · 12/06/2024 17:11

Nothing to do with race, he is not believable or genuine. He is out of touch with reality.

Notellinganyone · 12/06/2024 17:12

No, he’s just a shit, unelected PM in the final agonising death throes of the Tories term.

MargotMoon · 12/06/2024 17:13

No, it's rooted in thinking that rich, out of touch people shouldn't be running the country.

emmetgirl · 12/06/2024 17:14

Nope.
He's just not very good at his job.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/06/2024 17:17

I reckon he's been ineffective within Government/his own party largely because of a combination of their racism and general ineptitude. He's only there because he was the least worst option of the lot of them and I bet a fair few found it difficult to vote for him for any reason other than him not being one of the others scrabbling around for the job at the time.

When there are oblique references to his 'Culture' (oh, I mean his culture as being rich, not his Culture culture'), that's racism.

When it's 'he's ineffectual and the party is in complete disarray', it's not.

MarthaDunstable · 12/06/2024 17:20

I think it's a combination of things.

He's the leader of a wildly unpopular government.

The higher profile cabinet ministers have been pretty much invisible during the campaign apart from Penny Mordaunt who popped up to slag him off, so he's been taking all the flak single handed, despite not being well-equipped for the spotlight.

He's not very good at politics and comes across badly on TV.

Most of the Conservative Party resent him for calling a snap election which they think has stitched them up.

Racism from some quarters - most obviously Farage, but I'm sure there's others.

Lastly and most crucially, the news narrative has become "what's Rishi done wrong today?" Everything becomes seen through the news prism of the hapless idiot who can't do anything right. That doesn't actually play into any racial stereotypes as far as I can see - it's just the way the Power of Story is working out. News loves to tell us stories that repeat what we already believe.

HRTQueen · 12/06/2024 17:27

Yes there is a lot of racist comments being made about him often underhand which is something that just isn't acceptable. I think the criticism often comes from him being viewed as not really British, comments made about Johnson are often of a different tone regardless if they are positive or negative

Sunak certainly hasn't been a good PM he could have moved the party away from the right and more to the centre. He has followed two absolutely terrible PM's who for some reason he has not distanced himself from them enough but he isn't as bad as them

I am also not a Tory supporter, but he certainly is a better PM that Johnson or Truss
