To think it’s a bit racist to call him Richie Sunak?

I don’t like the man but for goodness’ sake it’s RISHI.

Some people seem unable to comprehend this and insist on calling him Richie, is it because Rishi is a non-English name and people simply can’t get their heads round it?

Isn't it

Rich - ie

A play on words ?

Hoppinggreen · 12/06/2024 11:44

I have never seen that but I agree its not hard to get his name right

Cadela · 12/06/2024 11:44

I think we should just call him a cunt. Saves any confusion.

MidnightPatrol · 12/06/2024 11:45

I’ve never seen this before. Where is it happening?

It is a bit like ‘Keith Starmer’, which also makes no sense but for some reason is used to insult him.

ReplenishMyCoffee · 12/06/2024 11:45

Maybe it’s a joke because he was poor growing up as his parents couldn’t afford Sky TV because they paid for him to go to one of the most expensive schools in the country.

Or maybe it’s because his wife and her family have vast personal wealth.

Who knows?

Waspie · 12/06/2024 11:45

It's because he's rich, as in very wealthy, not because they can't pronounce his name.

TomeTome · 12/06/2024 11:45

It’s because he’s RICH, very very rich

Technonan · 12/06/2024 11:45

It's a pun. He's obscenely rich, so people call him Rich-ie Sunak. Nothing racist about it.

This

Yep.

I also like the Grauniad name for him - Rish!

Because he’s a fucking joke

SuperSharpShooter · 12/06/2024 11:47

It's a play on words - because he's rich 🤷

Keith Starmer is just plain funny for funny sake.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 12/06/2024 11:48

It's either a pun (most likely, him and his wife are insanely rich), or the people who say it don't read a lot. Most misspellings and mispronunciations are down to never having bothered to look at the letters in a word.

ll09sm · 12/06/2024 11:49

You know you don’t have to play identity politics and find racism where there is none.

It’s probably a play on him being rich. Though that’s problematic in itself. Criticise the guy for being an incompetent or useless politician. But why criticise him for being rich. Probably because it’s little Britain, little island mentality. Hate anyone who is better off than you. Wanting everyone to be equally poor. Crabs in a bucket.

safetyfreak · 12/06/2024 11:49

Oh my, it is because he is RICH!

Nonspecificcheese · 12/06/2024 11:50

It’s a play on words - he’s RICH and hence Richie.

A bit like the people who (tediously, thinking it’s hilarious) called Blair, Tony Bliar.

RagzRebooted · 12/06/2024 11:50

Even news presenters do this, which I doubt is a play on words.

Racist. They are out to get him, just as they have with anyone who is in a position of power andis darker-skinned than others

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/06/2024 11:50

I had also assumed that it was a dig at his personal wealth, rather than ignorant racism.

It highlights the fact that he has absolutely no idea whatsoever, what it is like to live from hand to mouth, to worry about money and bills, and what will happen if you have a sudden, big expense, like needing a new fridge or oven, or the kids growing out of their shoes. NHS waiting lists will never bother him or his family because they can just pay for whatever they need.

And from a privileged position like that, I honestly don't think he can appreciate or understand how badly Conservative policies have affected ordinary people.

The sooner we see the back of him, the better.

Absolutely. And time.

Dontgetdebtpet · 12/06/2024 11:52

He's a billionaire. Don't get your knickers in a twist.

SpringerFall · 12/06/2024 11:53

Rich as in money, the only way I can think you could get racist out of it is if you don't think he could be rich because of his race?

WantToMakeWorldSilkySmooth · 12/06/2024 11:54

English is not my first language and even I got it's as pps said a joke about him being rich.... And working for the rich...

IncompleteSenten · 12/06/2024 12:04

Maybe, but I think for most it's probably mishearing with maybe some ignorant white British default mentality in there rather than a deliberate and purposeful act of racism iyswim

Chester draws
Could of, should of, would of, bone apple tea, be pacific in your reply, your you're, their they're there...

Rishi v Richie? Oh his name's Rishi, how can I convey my racism in a subtle and deniable way oh I've got it, Richie is a British name and Rishi sounds quite like Richie so if I call him Richie I'm making a racist point about his foreign name harhar that'll show him.

I seriously doubt most people are putting that much thought into it tbh.

They're probably just not paying attention.

Or reading.

flyingvisit · 12/06/2024 12:07

I call him Richie as in a play on his name because he is "richie rich"- not because I cant or wont pronounce Rishi. It's mot racist, its lampooning.
