To think it’s a bit racist to call him Richie Sunak?

I don’t like the man but for goodness’ sake it’s RISHI.

Some people seem unable to comprehend this and insist on calling him Richie, is it because Rishi is a non-English name and people simply can’t get their heads round it?

Maybe, but I think for most it's probably mishearing with maybe some ignorant white British default mentality in there rather than a deliberate and purposeful act of racism iyswim

Could of, should of, would of, bone apple tea, be pacific in your reply, your you're, their they're there...

Rishi v Richie? Oh his name's Rishi, how can I convey my racism in a subtle and deniable way oh I've got it, Richie is a British name and Rishi sounds quite like Richie so if I call him Richie I'm making a racist point about his foreign name harhar that'll show him.

I seriously doubt most people are putting that much thought into it tbh.

They're probably just not paying attention.

Or reading.

For christs sake. It is a pun, and a very common approach to take for politicians and public figures. Everything is not racist.

Echobelly · 12/06/2024 13:08

It's a play on words and his immense wealth not a 'Ooh, he has a weird forrin name, I'm not going to say it' dig, totally fair game in my books. It's no different to doing it if his name was Richard.

Revelatio · 12/06/2024 13:09

They also used to call him dishy-rishy so people are also blind.

randomchap · 12/06/2024 13:13

I can't believe you're bullying a man who didn't have sky TV when he was a child. The poor lamb, he must have been traumatised.

I think sometimes it might be a play on the fact he’s rich, but I think some people just can’t get their heads round a non-British name and it’s rude/racist.

OP it is ALWAYS used as a play on words - nothing to do with people not being able to pronounce his name or being racist. I think wordplay may be somewhat lost on you...

somewhereovertherain · 12/06/2024 13:21

He's a cunt who made his money crashing the banks.............

Reallybadidea · 12/06/2024 13:25

I don't think it's racist, just a play on words as others have said. It screams red top headlines as with David Scameron, Chris Witless etc and makes me think the person using using it is utterly stupid and unable to make any kind of coherent argument.

BIWI · 12/06/2024 12:36

I've never seen him called Richie on MN, nor have I heard any news presenter use the wrong name/pronunciation. I suspect you're making that one up for effect.

Well there’s a live thread with it in the title right now, and another poster also mentioned it being heard from a news presenter. Maybe you need to listen to the news a bit more if you think I’m making it up.

This thread has been enlightening as I assumed the majority were just pronouncing it wrong but now I see perhaps it’s a dig and not just people being stupid in the majority of cases!

It's a pun. He's obscenely rich, so people call him Rich-ie Sunak. Nothing racist about it.

I thought this would be obvious.

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/06/2024 13:57

Mm... if it were not the case that pretty much every politician and particularly every PM and party leader has had some sort of derogatory nickname, I might agree..

We have a long standing tradition here of lampooning and taking the piss and some pretty vulgar and brutal political cartooning of our party leaders and other prominent political characters. Whilst some of it isn't to my taste, I do think it's broadly a good thing, better than living somewhere where voicing ones opinion about a political leader would land you in prison or get you killed, certainly!

I don't think Rishi should get a pass because of his ancestry or colour.

DiscoBeat · 12/06/2024 13:59

People are just poking at his wealth, and the irony. Nothing to do with his colour.

Mostlycarbon · 12/06/2024 14:00

Hopefully we won't have to be saying it at all for very much longer.

therealcookiemonster · 12/06/2024 14:00

I call him poshboy. is that racist too?

blacksax · 12/06/2024 14:01

midgetastic · 12/06/2024 11:44

Isn't it

Rich - ie

A play on words ?

I've never heard anyone calling him that, but I'm guessing it is a play on words, yes.

Heirian · 12/06/2024 14:19

For God's sake, racism is everywhere yes but this particular piece of mockery is based on his wealth. He is very wealthy. He is also in the press right now playing down his wealth. 🙄

Daphnis156 · 12/06/2024 14:23

What is racist about it?
Politicians deserve to be called any names, as they are all liars and cheats.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 12/06/2024 14:26

It’s a put down nothing to do with his race

Topseyt123 · 12/06/2024 14:27

I haven't actually heard it directly but would have assumed that it was poking fun at his not inconsiderable wealth.

RisingMist · 12/06/2024 14:29

It is never OK to mock anyone because of their racial background.

It is fine to mock a prime minister because he is (apparently) worth £651M but thinks he can identify with the majority because he didn't have Sky TV as a child.

Katypp · 12/06/2024 14:30

He's extremely wealthy so for some reason this means posters are free to attack him as much as they want.
