To think it’s a bit racist to call him Richie Sunak?

I don’t like the man but for goodness’ sake it’s RISHI.

Some people seem unable to comprehend this and insist on calling him Richie, is it because Rishi is a non-English name and people simply can’t get their heads round it?

No it’s because he’s fucking rich and very focussed on getting richer.
Are you always this hard of understanding? You’re being deliberately obtuse and race bating. Stop trying to engineer racism where it isn’t.

Runsyd · 12/06/2024 14:32

Making a joke is racist now.

I think we should just call him a cunt. Saves any confusion.

Absolutely!

That name's already been taken by Jeremy Cunt.

Stinkerantibiotic · 12/06/2024 14:38

I thought he was just Rich!

Making a joke is racist now.

Being pissed off at useless governmental puppets is racist too.

IReallyStillCantBeBothered · 12/06/2024 14:45

I’m a minority and it’s obvious to me that it’s because he’s rich and out of touch not because his name isn’t English. Like the migie Richie Rich?

crumpet · 12/06/2024 14:48

I can remember not too far back when there were headlines about Dishy Rishi

Foxesandsquirrels · 12/06/2024 14:49

It's not a secret that he's the richest PM in all of history so it's just a play on words. White PMs have been called a lot worse. It's not a race thing, please.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 12/06/2024 14:50

Umm…

To think it’s a bit racist to call him Richie Sunak?

Lentilweaver · 12/06/2024 14:52

I am Indian and I am happy for people to call him a cunt. Or preferably, a dick. Hopefully we won't have him and his cabinet of brown racists around much longer.

mibbelucieachwell · 12/06/2024 14:54

I've heard of people who refer to him as Richie Sunk.

Just saying'

ToWhitToWhoo · 12/06/2024 14:54

No, it's because he's rich. Like the comic book character Richie Rich.

In any case, people are always getting Keir Starmer's name wrong too; Kier or even Keith.

NasiDagang · 12/06/2024 15:02

I don't care what people call him, they can call him idiot, asshole or dickhead. I'm an Indian by the way and I hate Richie Sunak compared to the other Prime Ministers.

Hateam · 12/06/2024 15:17

You're crying wolf.

Hb7x3 · 12/06/2024 15:22

YaWeeFurryBastard · 12/06/2024 12:10

Well exactly, plus two people I work with who are fans of his so I don’t think it’s a dig.

I think sometimes it might be a play on the fact he’s rich, but I think some people just can’t get their heads round a non-British name and it’s rude/racist.

but I think some people just can’t get their heads round a non-British name and it’s rude/racist.

Seriously?? That's ridiculous. Name one other, well known person with a non-british name that people commonly do this with.

Scruffily · 12/06/2024 15:46

Come off it. What has a play on someone's name got to do with race? Was it equally racist to call Blair Bliar? To say nothing of all the silly names the right wing has found for Starmer.

Scruffily · 12/06/2024 15:48

Katypp · 12/06/2024 14:30

He's extremely wealthy so for some reason this means posters are free to attack him as much as they want.

No, people are free to attack him for being a lying incompetent hypocrite. Because that's accurate.

This

Noooo! I refuse to use a bit of female anatomy as the worst term of abuse.
The man is a prize dick, cock or wanker.

Snapplepie · 12/06/2024 15:52

I'm related to a Rishi who frequently gets Richie, Ricky etc from people who dont think it matters. I get that it is a play on the fact that the is rich. But it is also something that people who are a bit ignorant/racist do to others with a name that suggests they are not white so I can see why some people are offended. In reality the majority of people using it probably aren't giving it that much thought, but it does grate a bit if you've spent your whole life trying to get people to give you the basic consideration of pronouncing your name right.

It is a joke and for the most part I'm sure the people making it dont hate brown people. But, for those saying that there is no problem getting people to pronounce names that aren't British in 2024- I wish I still believed this. I've seen perfectly obvious phonetically pronounced names (including rishi!) absolutely butcherd regularly, often anglicized despite frequent correction. Last year a nurse looked at my sons name, gave a tinkly laugh and announced she wasn't even going to try to say it. It's absolutely an every day thing.

PadstowGirl · 12/06/2024 15:53

Why, just why, does a man worth more than our king, want to be the prime minister, with all the stress that it entails, for the princely sum of a couple of hundred grand (peanuts to him).
Unless it's to make sure that the interests of the very very rich are protected.
He doesn't give a fuck about ordinary people.

That's as may be. But most of the posts here are attacking his wealth and the nickname in question references his wealth.

I agree with this bit. I too have had the tinkly laugh. But in the OPs example, it is a pun.

Dotjones · 12/06/2024 15:58

Loads of politicians have names that play on their perceived character/personality, Tony Bliar, Sleepy Joe Biden, all the way back to "Mad Jack" Fuller. With Sunak the play is that he's obscenely rich, not a mere multi-millionaire man of the people like Keir Starmer.
