To think it’s a bit racist to call him Richie Sunak?

I don’t like the man but for goodness’ sake it’s RISHI.

Some people seem unable to comprehend this and insist on calling him Richie, is it because Rishi is a non-English name and people simply can’t get their heads round it?

Even news presenters do this, which I doubt is a play on words.

Well exactly, plus two people I work with who are fans of his so I don’t think it’s a dig.

I think sometimes it might be a play on the fact he’s rich, but I think some people just can’t get their heads round a non-British name and it’s rude/racist.

Nothing racist when I call him that, it's a play on words because of his obscene wealth. Mostly I just call him Knobhead though.

Edited for typo

Quittingwifework · 12/06/2024 12:11

I’ve seen more people writing Kier instead of Keir than this!

I think we should just call him a cunt. Saves any confusion.

This has made me laugh, I agree with you though 😂

Cas112 · 12/06/2024 12:12

Ehhhhhh???? Its to do with the amount of money he has, not his race 😒

flyingvisit · 12/06/2024 12:15

No different to:
"Freebie Blair"
"Tony Blur"
"Bojo"
"Cruella Braverman"

I think you’re being a bit OTT. People mispronounce plenty of English names too, yes it’s annoying but let’s not jump straight to the racism card

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/06/2024 12:27

It isn't racist. And I think plenty of things are. It isn't referencing his race but his personal financial situation.

SisterAgatha · 12/06/2024 12:28

Isn’t this a joke because he’s richer than the king, rather than being unable to pronounce his name?

News presenters? Which ones?

Lentilweaver · 12/06/2024 12:31

"Rishi" means seer or wise sage. If ever there was a more misnamed man...

Who do you work with? It isn’t exactly hard to pronounce.

You know you don’t have to play identity politics and find racism where there is none.

It’s probably a play on him being rich. Though that’s problematic in itself. Criticise the guy for being an incompetent or useless politician. But why criticise him for being rich. Probably because it’s little Britain, little island mentality. Hate anyone who is better off than you. Wanting everyone to be equally poor. Crabs in a bucket.

I don’t think it’s that. I think it’s probably that our political leader is unrelatable in any normal sense of the world. How many people voting for him are richer than the king? Who are this man’s peers? Whats his life experience? What will he prioritise? Sky TV for all, when in reality a lot of normal
people can’t afford food.

I don’t think it’s jealousy here, I think it’s that he is so outrageously wealthy that it’s beyond comprehension.

BIWI · 12/06/2024 12:36

I've never seen him called Richie on MN, nor have I heard any news presenter use the wrong name/pronunciation. I suspect you're making that one up for effect.

Itsonlymashadow · 12/06/2024 12:47

People can’t get their head round his name?

It’s not a complex name. It’s not got sounds that are unfamiliar to an English speaker.

I would love to see an example of anyone pronouncing Richie, as you are describing.

VickyEadieofThigh · 12/06/2024 12:49

TomeTome · 12/06/2024 11:45

It’s because he’s RICH, very very rich

Edited

It's because he's astonishingly rich. Politicians are often given joke names that are a pun on their own name.

It's not racist.

AddersAtDawn · 12/06/2024 12:53

I've also never heard him called Richie by anyone other than those making reference to his money. Ditto Rishi Soon-to-be-sacked.

And I don't thinik it is jealousy - I think it's that the wealth combined with his own behaviour it leaves him seeming like he hasn't got a clue how most people in the country live. Contrived shots of him trying to use a payment card, trying to fill the car, old interviews in which he says 'I have friends who are aristocrats, friends who are upper class, friends who are working class.... well, not working class' and more recently the interview in which he used not having Sky TV has a child as an example of how he had to go without. None of this helps.

I have heard newsreaders misprounounce Jeremy Hunt's name - but I think that might have been deliberate Grin

Keith Starmer is funny Grin

Zwicky · 12/06/2024 12:56

I think some people just can’t get their heads round a non-British name

Oh, come on. You think people can’t get their heads around a non English
name? In Britain? In 2024? It’s not even a vaguely difficult name with non standard English pronunciation of any of the sounds in it.

But why criticise him for being rich.

Maybe because he pretends to be poor, or at least normal, such as that time he pretended to be filling up “his” car in sainsburys, and the sky dish thing, or the “when I got my keys to my first flat…” wistful lament in the tv debate.

Or it may be because his policies as chancellor and then as prime minister increased the personal wealth of people like him, at the expense of the majority of the population.

Or it might be because much of his personal wealth dates from when he was a partner in TCI, which forced the sale of ABN Amro which ultimately led to the collapse of RBS and the £45 billion tax payer bailout.

Or it might because so much of his time in government office has been a sustained and deliberate transfer of public money to a small number of greedy, private hands.

ginasevern · 12/06/2024 12:59

It's because he's rich, filthy rich. Keith Starmer is used to take the piss out of his working class background versus old Etonian tories.

flyingvisit · 12/06/2024 12:59

Believe you me, mine isnt jealousy. He just IS the "poor little rich boy". It's funny.
Lampooning politicians is part of the fabric of the nation.

Springchickenonion · 12/06/2024 13:01

It's a joke... because he is rich. No racism involved. Good try though

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 12/06/2024 13:01

Most political leaders get called names. He is no different.

Samcro · 12/06/2024 13:05

never heard it before. but people have names for politicians. like scameron.
