To think it’s a bit racist to call him Richie Sunak?

I don’t like the man but for goodness’ sake it’s RISHI.

Some people seem unable to comprehend this and insist on calling him Richie, is it because Rishi is a non-English name and people simply can’t get their heads round it?

I'm related to a Rishi who frequently gets Richie, Ricky etc from people who dont think it matters. I get that it is a play on the fact that the is rich. But it is also something that people who are a bit ignorant/racist do to others with a name that suggests they are not white so I can see why some people are offended. In reality the majority of people using it probably aren't giving it that much thought, but it does grate a bit if you've spent your whole life trying to get people to give you the basic consideration of pronouncing your name right.

It is a joke and for the most part I'm sure the people making it dont hate brown people. But, for those saying that there is no problem getting people to pronounce names that aren't British in 2024- I wish I still believed this. I've seen perfectly obvious phonetically pronounced names (including rishi!) absolutely butcherd regularly, often anglicized despite frequent correction. Last year a nurse looked at my sons name, gave a tinkly laugh and announced she wasn't even going to try to say it. It's absolutely an every day thing.

I’m white…. People get my name wrong all the time, in writing and speech 🤷🏼‍♀️

Well people insist on calling Starmer Keith, is that racist?

It's a play on words - because he's rich 🤷

Keith Starmer is just plain funny for funny sake.

Edited

It's not meant to be funny

Penguinfeet24 · 12/06/2024 16:54

As people have said, its taking the piss out of the fact that he sits with billions in the bank account whilst watching the entire nation slipping into poverty. The bloke is an utter cunt.

Racist. They are out to get him, just as they have with anyone who is in a position of power andis darker-skinned than others

Yes, if you say someone is shit at their job (when they actually are) you must be racist. Stands to reason 🤷‍♂️

missmollygreen · 12/06/2024 17:14

YaWeeFurryBastard · 12/06/2024 12:10

Well exactly, plus two people I work with who are fans of his so I don’t think it’s a dig.

I think sometimes it might be a play on the fact he’s rich, but I think some people just can’t get their heads round a non-British name and it’s rude/racist.

It is not racist to miss-pronounce a name, fucks sake

Lentilweaver · 12/06/2024 12:31

"Rishi" means seer or wise sage. If ever there was a more misnamed man...

It's a tie with James Cleverly.

rwalker · 12/06/2024 17:20

It’s a reference to wealth not race
it has nothing to do with racism

StaunchMomma · 12/06/2024 17:21

How can you have missed that it's a pun on him being incredibly RICH?!

Sometimes posts on here just make me laugh out loud without any form of self control or conscious effort.

Best response I've seen for ages!

housethatbuiltme · 12/06/2024 18:11

Well I have never heard him called that but from just the title I instantly though... isn't he famous for hoarding his wealth of shore... Richie like 'Richie Rich'.

For what its worth I have a non English name and the names racists come up with never even sound close to my actual name, Im often lucky if they share more than 1 or 2 letters in common. Example: Say the name in question was Mahika then the type that don't bother to learn anything 'foreign' would just call you Michelle, Mary or Monica etc...

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 12/06/2024 18:49

Definitely a piss-take at how rich he is.

I don't think anyone spells their name 'Richie' anyway, do they? It's usually spelt 'Ritchie'.

Also, every second person on Mumsnet spells Keir wrong.

Think he's been called far worse.

WorriedMama12 · 12/06/2024 19:07

This race baiting is shocking. Shame on you.

It's because he's as rich as the king.

Boris was Bojo

Truss the human hand grenade

Theresa May the May bot.

Cameron Lord Dave

All to do with their key characteristics. Although Bojo seems quite tame for the lying, corrupt twat. Rishi is wealthier than the king and completely out of touch with real life. If the cap fits wear it.

AmpleFatball · 12/06/2024 19:32

A bit of tangent but anyone remember the nicknames the Tories tried to get to stick to Starmer?

Sir Beer Korma was pretty bad but I nearly died of cringe at “Captain Crash-a-roony Snoozefest”.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 12/06/2024 19:40

No, its because people like to play with words, especially to express their contempt. I dont care what colour he is - I do care that he is from an incredibly insulated bubble and seems to actively resist understanding that this is not everyones experience. And that he pursues policies which privilege other rich people and penalize anyone else.
