Colleague has said I'm vain a few times

1000 replies

Spottttty · 12/06/2024 06:56

Well not said it, but heavily implied it. I could understand if I'm going around saying 'Look at me I'm soo beautiful' but obviously this isn't the case.

She's said this because I sometimes put make up on or use a mirror at work at lunch. So what? Like it's not affecting her in any way.
She's made comments about 3 times, I've just laughed but next time I'll say something maybe?

It might just be friendly ribbing as she's nice otherwise but not sure what her goal is. She's someone who doesn't wear a scrap of make up and that's up to her, I'm not someone who can do that and that's just me.

It's internalised misogyny. It's because it's something that women do and men don't.

Personally I would do it in the toilet, but I still think it's rude to make these kinds of comments. It's basically a form of sexist bullying.

What about the man with his sinex spray?

Yoh can’t come on Mn and hope to win every argument by deploying the word misogyny.

AliceOlive · 13/06/2024 12:46

Calliopespa · 13/06/2024 12:41

She’s just giving her opinion.

There’s a worrying trend these days that anything self-focused or anti establishment or counter custom has to be given acres of elbow room because everyone ( I repeat everyone) is allowed their own standards and opinions. Yet somehow when a person’s opinion is that it’s quite nice to uphold certain standards, that opinion needs to be stamped out like a campfire in Yellowstone . See the failure in logic?

So let’s try that again. It’s her opinion. You hope you live long enough to be rocking blue goth hair; she hopes she lives long enough to be an older lady still with her dignity intact. ( Btwyou’ll be safe whichever camp you join as there is always the very conservative “blue rinse.”)

Thank you! I didn’t even give any opinion on anyone’s choice of makeup, either.

I don’t understand taking the time to present yourself a certain way in public if you are putting the makeup on in public. It’s a bit like the actors in a play getting in costume right on the stage with the audience watching.

Or dropping the backdrop sheet while the curtain is up and the stage lit.

FFS, no it’s not and men do wear makeup. Saw one yesterday with gorgeous eye makeup. I knew a man that also wore concealer. They’d never put this stuff on in the common room at work, because that spoils the entire point.

Are you bothering to read the discussion?

@AliceOlive Do you seriously think that people are going to read over 700 posts before replying? Get a grip.

And no, the vast majority of men do not wear makeup. If they did, then you would no doubt get some who apply it in public.

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 13/06/2024 12:59

RoseUnder · 13/06/2024 12:42

Applying make-up with a mirror in a communal place in the office is unprofessional, and will influence people's perception of you which may in turn influence their decisions in terms of how they interact with you in the workplace, or how seriously they regard you.

If you don't care about any of that, then power ahead! It's just a social more, you won't be sacked for it. But you might not be promoted.

I'd say that depends pretty heavily on whether it's being done during work hours or a break.

Megifer · 13/06/2024 13:01

So now we have women putting on makeup being compared to actors getting in costume and theatre backdrops?

Nope, no misogyny here 😬

Men were make up? Since when?
Is this part of the new gender malarkey?

Either way men are not encouraged to feel as though they are defined by their appearance the way woman are.

Sounds like you weren't around in the early 80s. Men in makeup were definitely a thing then!

Well you need to read the thread then to comment in full context. Because the discussion hasn’t only been round “women’s” grooming; it’s grooming in general. Sinex spray was mentioned upthread.

That’s right: no misogyny.

henlake7 · 13/06/2024 13:19

I think there is just a level of where things are inappropriate for certain times and places.
Like doing your make up in staff toilet....fine, doing it in the canteen? too much.
Or I dont really know the male equivalent? readjusting yourself in the staff toilet but not in the canteen?LOL

IMO the limits for public primping is really just lipstick/balm and handcream anything else you can surely wait and faff about with in the loo?

No3387 · 13/06/2024 13:22

Spottttty · 13/06/2024 12:34

There's an enormous level of snobbery around make up, hair extensions, Botox, fillers and so on because it's seen as 'classy' to present as 100% natural and men expect you to be naturally beautiful 🙄

There's also a hell of a lot of snobbery on this thread. But hey, it is keeping me amused at work! On a bank of desks with no partitions, where we often do our make up, and share tips and product ideas etc.

I have quite a firm grip in the conversation. It’s you who seems to be confused. Fine not to read it, but don’t get all out of joint when someone mentions things posted that you did not bother to read, Princess.

Men are criticized for grooming themselves in public and have been in this very thread.

MidnightMeltdown · 13/06/2024 13:25

@Calliopespa

Who do you think you are to dictate how people are allowed to use mumsnet?

My comment has absolutely nothing to do with Sinex spray! Besides, Sinex spray bares no relevance whatsoever to makeup - it is a medication.

Good example. I know a guy that’s constantly hiking his pants up and tucking his shirt in. So frequently that it’s hard to be around him.

Since spray was part of the conversation. You don’t have to take part, but don’t expect people to dumb it all down for you. No one knows what you bothered to read.

I know plenty of men that work at presenting themselves a certain way. Do you not have instagram?

I’m not dictating. I’m just saying if you don’t read it, you will make comments out of context which then get ignored.

I was simply explaining why I was dismissing it.

I think the point is you stick it up your nose.

Thats a thing I’d prefer to do in private.
Anal pessaries are medication too.

MidnightMeltdown · 13/06/2024 13:41

@Calliopespa

Personally I couldn't give a shit whether people use Sinex spray in public or not, although it's understandable that people may be grossed out by the fact that the person using Sinex may be infectious.

Still, this has no relevance to the conversation on makeup. Makeup is not an indication of infection. It impacts nobody but the wearer.

AliceOlive · 13/06/2024 13:49

@Calliopespa I’m starting to lose the plot.
