Colleague has said I'm vain a few times

1000 replies

Spottttty · 12/06/2024 06:56

Well not said it, but heavily implied it. I could understand if I'm going around saying 'Look at me I'm soo beautiful' but obviously this isn't the case.

She's said this because I sometimes put make up on or use a mirror at work at lunch. So what? Like it's not affecting her in any way.
She's made comments about 3 times, I've just laughed but next time I'll say something maybe?

It might just be friendly ribbing as she's nice otherwise but not sure what her goal is. She's someone who doesn't wear a scrap of make up and that's up to her, I'm not someone who can do that and that's just me.

It's a rec room as opposed to a restaurant as such, I should've made that clearer. Also she said it when I wasn't applying make up, just using a mirror.

Why on earth do you need to use a mirror in company? It is vain. It is also socially inappropriate.

pinkdelight · 12/06/2024 07:20

to call you vain seems OTT and unpleasant.

She hasn't called OP vain. The title is a bum steer. It's more is colleague BU to not like me reapplying my make up around her in public.

Using a mirror for what? Were you just sat that checking yourself out?

It's also not for her to dictate where I do it

True.

It's also not for you to dictate what she thinks or says.

It does seem a bit unnecessary to put makeup on in a public space, and why would you be using a mirror there? By vain, does your colleague mean " overly concerned about your looks"? I have heard people use the word in that way. I think if you are going to put on makeup in public, you are going to have to expect people to have an opinion on you doing that.

Then don't do it in front of an audience. Why not just go to the toilets?

Spottttty · 12/06/2024 07:04

Nope it's a group of us at lunch sitting together in the canteen. Some talking, some on their phones, some reading. I don't see how me putting on a bit of concealer or mascara is so offensive 🤣

Because it is common to apply make-up in public.

user09876543 · 12/06/2024 07:25

I wear a LOT of make up. So I’m not judging you in that respect but putting it on in public will make people think you’re lacking in understanding about social etiquette and also that you can’t stop thinking about the way you look. Don’t do it in a public place like a staff room, that’s just weird.

Ragwort · 12/06/2024 07:25

Most of the replies on this thread agree that your behaviour is inappropriate yet you can't seem to see that ... you keep saying 'it's not a canteen' etc ... maybe you are just being deliberately obtuse and unaware of normal social behaviour in a work setting.

Allfur · 12/06/2024 07:26

Why does mascara need reapplying in the middle if the day

Spottttty · 12/06/2024 07:27

Oh my goodness.. it's a rec room and I got a small mirror out for 20 seconds to reapply a bit of concealer or whatever. I didn't know it could cause such offence and distress to people 🤣 she didn't say I'm vain, she mimicked the actions of me doing it.

Because some make up comes off during the day..?

DappledThings · 12/06/2024 07:27

I'd probably mock someone a bit for that too. It's so unnecessary. Aren't you a bit embarrassed that you feel so insecure you need to be checking yourself out in a mirror randomly in the middle of the day?

leafybrew · 12/06/2024 07:27

Hoardasurass · 12/06/2024 07:07

You really shouldn't be doing your make-up in the canteen, that's really not ok

Why???

No I'm not embarrassed. Believe it not some people do reapply make up/look in a mirror! It's not hurting anyone else, it's nobody else's concern really.

Who said anything offence and distress? More likely she thinks it's embarrassing for you.

Theydogethystericalovertheslightestthing · 12/06/2024 07:29

I cannot understand people doing their entire make-up, from scratch, on the tube or bus. The dirt on public transport, esp tube, will be blended into your face for a start
Then the gurning as mascara and lippy are spplied.
Or the false eyelashes
It's revolting

How is it 'inappropriate'?

Christ - what else are we not allowed to do?

Has no one ever slapped on a bit of lipstick after lunch?

Nouvellenovel · 12/06/2024 07:31

@Spottttty i don’t know why you’re getting a hard time here.
There’s nothing wrong with checking your face in a mirror before returning to work. Better than having spinach in your teeth.
As long as you don’t brush your hair, not nice near food.

user09876543 · 12/06/2024 07:31

Why did you post OP when you clearly don’t want to listen to what most people are saying.

go to the loos if you want to reapply your make up (other than a two second slap in of extra lipstick if required). Particularly things like concealer etc.

Or don’t. In which case a significant number of people will think you’re obsessed with the way you look.

YourPithyLilacSheep · 12/06/2024 07:32

Well, putting on make-up while sitting round chatting is - just, well not very nice. I don't think it's particularly mannerly - manners being about consideration for others.

BlueMum16 · 12/06/2024 07:32

Just nip to the bathroom to check your makeup.
Problem solved.

leafybrew · 12/06/2024 07:32

😂😅😆

Belching loudly or farting in public - yes - that's revolting.

But putting on mascara?? I think a lot of folk on here need to Get.A.Grip.

Then…what’s your problem?

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 12/06/2024 07:33

I would think it a bit odd if someone whipped out their make up bag in the canteen tbh. Could you use the bathroom to touch up your make up?
