This covid merry-go-round is never going to end, is it

covid again, oxygen monitors again, off work again, informing all vulnerable contacts again, feeling terrible again. I have had 8 immunisations. Well, at least it isn't anything like as bad as it could be without immunisations. But this is never going to end, is it. Every year, at least 2 immunisations, and at least 2 illnesses, until the one that finishes me off , I suppose. That is without counting the disruption when someone else tests positive, instead of me.

Such as?

Hi Rationalmum, talking of videos we may/may not have watched...
There have been a few mentions of long covid on this thread, especially in the last page or two.
Have you watched any of the conversations between John Campbell and Professor Robert Clancy? eg:

and there are others, all fascinating, and easy to find, and with some, but nottoo much, technical detail. Particularly relevant to long covid, and what he and his team have been discovering about it. They are particularly interesting to watch, on a human level, as they wonderfully convey the sense of excitement and enthusiasm involved in scientific research and discovery - well, I thought so.. Anyone out there with long covid might find something useful in them.

Thank you for this. I have watched several Debunk the Funk videos, but I have come to the conclusion that he is not an honest agent. For example, off the top of my head, I recall him totally dismissing the idea that ivermectin could possibly be of value in treating covid: he sarcastically goes on about how, if that were the case, the drug companies would have used it and made a fortune with it, and since they didn't do this there cannot be anything in it. I think such comments show extreme naivety in the matter, since ivermectin is out of patent and extremely cheap, and obviously if the pharmaceutical industry can make a vaccine at many times the cost of ivermectin then they'd obviously stand to earn much more through producing the expensive vaccine. By making naive comments like this I believe he shows himself to be so full of zeal to rubbish things he disapproves of [ivermectin, Dr Campbell, Bret Weinstein and so on] that his zealotry makes him dishonest.
But the focus in the Campbell / Clancy video that I referred to is on Professor Clancy, so I don't think that attempting to rubbish Cambell is particularly a propos.
I posted the video as I thought it might possibly be of use to people with long covid. I hope it proves to be.

Just because a drug is out of patent it doesn't mean it is cheap. It depends on supply and demand like everything else. If ivermectin was effective against covid demand would have been so high drug companies who manufactured it would have been able to name their price and would have made a fortune. Trials clearly showed it wasn't effective though.

Also, ivermectin is not "out of patent" - it doesn't have a license for oral use for covid in the first place. This means that the door was open for a drug company to get a license and patent it if they could show it to be effective for covid.

Yes. Well, ivermectin is produced in huge quantities, especially in India, because it is a drug in huge demand in Africa as an anti-parasitic. So it is cheap. (Compare say the cost of ivermectin with a course of remdesivir). There is no supply problem with ivermectin. It is cheap. For Debunk the Funk to say "Pharmaceutical companies would make a fortune from ivermectin if it worked" in his scoffing fashion is totally innumerate and goes some way to ruining his credibility in my eyes.

You surprise me - my understanding is that the patent on ivemectin itself expired in the mid 1990's - isn't that the case? It may be that some particular formulation of ivermectin with other pharmaceuticals is currently patented - not sure. But my understanding is that the patent on ivermectin expired some decades ago, since which time it has been manufactured as an unpatented generic pharmaceutical.
I believe the intellectual/property rights are with Merck, the original developer; I don't see how you think another company could come along and patent it. Whether you believe it's been found effective for covid or not, doctors are able to prescribe things off-label, and many have done so with ivermectin over the last few years, irrespective of its patent status, or its license status in connection with a particular illness.

Where are the pro vaccine people? I don't see a single one

Why do you think people are rejecting it in this way?

spikeandbuffy · 23/06/2024 16:06

Because the average U.K. literacy level is low?
Then you've got the conspiracy flat earth people plus the ones who think homeopathy is better than antibiotics. Add all those together

I don't really know, I just do what's best for me and that's to get my flu and covid vaccine to protect myself as best as I can due to my vulnerabilities

Question the Covid response?
“Covidiot”

Question Ukraine war?
“Putin apologist”

Question net zero?
“Climate change denier”

Question the Covid vaccine?
“Anti-vaxxer”

These lazy gaslighting tropes are designed to shut down and undermine any questioning of the narrative.

And do you keep catching COVID and getting sick like sixtysomething?

spikeandbuffy · 23/06/2024 17:50

No, I've had it once and was very unwell
Hence why I avoid crowded spaces, public transport and wear an FFP2 mask if I go to a hospital appointment (but most of mine are by phone still)

So the vaccine is so effective you're literally a prisoner in your own home.

spikeandbuffy · 23/06/2024 18:43

No, I'm hardly a prisoner
I go for meals outside, I play netball outside, I go outdoor swimming etc etc
This would be life with or without covid anyway if I was immunocompromised due to chemo - mine just happens to be lifelong

Coffeeinsunshine · 23/06/2024 20:14

Just say for argument's sake it is all down to the vaccine, do you think covid causes any issues at all @Rationalmum? Do you think things are going smoothly now? Do you think all those suffering with health issues triggered by a covid infection without being vaccinated are delusional?
