To think DH should sit in the front?

BusyCM · 09/06/2024 10:06

Now and again we get an Uber with DD for quite journey of about 25/30 mins. Every time DH squeezes in the back with me and DD. I should say we are both a bit bigger and DH is tall. Dd id a teenager. He opens the door for us and we get in and then he makes us budge up and we all sit squashed in whilst the front passenger seat is empty.

Is this weird? He thinks you don't sit in the front seat, I think he should.

I would sit in the front but I generally think he should and secondly he gestures for me to get in first and then gets in after. It would be silly for me to get back out and walk around to the front seat.

What do you think?

The idea men should sit in the front makes me seethe. The passenger seat moves back and forward so length of legs is a total non issue. They just like it as it’s generally considered preferable and make up reasons why they should always have the best thing.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/06/2024 19:10

@BusyCM

So next time you get an Uber, when he opens the door for you say "I'm tired of the 3 of us being all squished up. Shall I ride in the front or shall you?". Either he'll say "I'll ride in front" or he'll say "But we should all 3 ride in back". Then you say "OK, that's me in front then" and get in front. He'll either get the message or he won't. Either way, no more being squished.

When there have been 3 of us, who rides in front depends on who the 3rd passenger is. His friend, I'm in front. My friend, he's in front. An adult DC or our DiL, it's a toss up but any one of us will hop in the front. It's ridiculous to squish in.

See this is why at least one half of a couple should hold a license, it would save bizarre disappointments like this Grin (around these ways everyone squeezes into the back. No one wants to make awkward small talk with the drivers. All the drivers ever do is moan and whinge!)

That wouldn't solve a situation where both adults have had a drink though.

discountsandoffers · 09/06/2024 16:20

So the poor DD sits between her two pissed parents 🤭

OP, how often does this actually happen?

I don't know about you but I'm perfectly capable of having a drink or not but not being drunk. Not everyone drinks to excess.

I just won't drive after even a single drink.

discountsandoffers · 09/06/2024 19:25

BusyCM · 09/06/2024 18:40

Yes of course we could but on rare occasions (2/3 year) we both like to have a drink together. Not pissed as the aforementioned overreacting PP likes to assume, but a couple of glasses of wine at a dinner party type situation.

so this happens a maximum of 3x… a YEAR!
😆

The advert was about wearing a seat belt, not having people who are heavier than you sit behind you. And he was hardly a whale of a teenage boy… Very odd that’s your takeaway from the advert.

Well I was about 11 and it didn’t seem worth taking chances after that. I do know that wasn’t ’the Point’ of the advert but it still makes me edgy, also a surprising number of adults don’t wear seatbelts!

I was even younger and even I remember that’s what the advert was about…but taking no chances with anyone heavier sitting behind you….a bit odd but at the same time, it was such a heavy advert I don’t blame you!

and your daughter is a teenager so she too could sit in the front and leave her daft parents to squabble in the back

Edited

Well it would certainly show them how a grown up behaves.

Men sit in the front.

I used to think this but found out I was wrong when I sat in the back seat to do my driving test and failed it!

Ilovelurchers · 09/06/2024 21:15

Why don't you take it in turns to go shotgun, if this is a regular journey the three of you make?

But above all else, why on earth don't you discuss this with your fella, rather than asking the internet?

You are intimate enough to exchange bodily fluids (one assumes). Then exchange a few words about the fact that you would like him to go shotgun in the Uber.....

Delphiniumandlupins · 09/06/2024 21:16

You just need to pre-empt his door opening with "Do you want to sit in the front?". If he says "No" you head for the front door.

Hoppinggreen · 09/06/2024 10:15

DH loves sitting in the front - its easier for him to ask the Taxi driver if he has been busy and what time he finishes
If he didn't I would quite happily do so (without the daft questions)

😂😂

ilovepixie · 09/06/2024 21:18

TiberiusFlam · 09/06/2024 10:15

Men sit in the front.

Is that because their massive penis won't fit in the back!

Led921900 · 09/06/2024 21:19

Is he shy? My DH is shy and I can imagine him doing something like this!
Also TWICE I have been in a taxi where the taxi driver has asked us not to sit in the front! I guess you don’t with black cabs either usually but it was weird as three adults had to get in the back, I don’t know why except maybe it wasn’t clean or something? And I’d expect DH to go in the front to have more room for himself and give us more room in the back since he is bigger.

I think a previous poster had a good suggestion which was basically saying “shall you get in the front or shall I” next time. Or tell him you’re ordering a people carrier with more room if he won’t get in the front because it squeezes you!

But check with the blooming driver because honestly some don’t expect anyone to get in the front!

TiberiusFlam · 09/06/2024 21:20

@ilovepixie that’s certainly the case for my husband

SirAlfredSpatchcock · 09/06/2024 23:06

Didn't read the whole thread, but men traditionally sit in the front because the driver was usually male, so the back seat was for the ladies.

That's a sentence that initially sounds like it should be an actual reason, but isn't in any way at all.

SirAlfredSpatchcock · 09/06/2024 23:08

I think the only rational solution for next time is going to be for you to tie him up (pop 40 or so feet of rope in your handbag before you leave home) and bundle him into the boot! Grin

Daizydozy · 09/06/2024 23:17

I’ve actually had a couple of Uber drivers whove said they don’t want people to sit in the front?! I’m also wondering if he’s shy/feels awkward… my mum told me once she had to sit in the front of an Uber and found it so awkward. She doesn’t like getting Ubers for that reason

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 09/06/2024 23:18

Your cab musings are helping me avoid work :)

Some cabs have a barrier between passengers and driver - clearly you are meant to fit in the back of those.

Otherwise - it might be best for the person happy to socialise with the driver or the tallest/longest legged person to get in the front?

Why don't you want to be in the front OP?

Perhaps your DP has the same reason.

SirAlfredSpatchcock · 10/06/2024 10:34

I get that black cabs are different, as they're designed that way - and they have five seats in the back anyway - but what is it with taxi drivers with 'normal' cars who ask you not to/don't allow you to sit in the front?

It's the equivalent of a van driver keeping a few empty cardboard washing machine boxes in the back and insisting that only the back two thirds of the cargo section can be used for actually usefully transporting goods... because... 'reasons'.

If you're not comfortable being at close quarters with members of the public in a normal travelling-in-a-car context, being a taxi driver is probably not a good occupation for you; same as if you cannot abide heights, maybe don't pursue the pilot training.

INeedToClingToSomething · 10/06/2024 17:57

When he says “budge up” say no, sit in the front. Then close the door. Or you should just sit in the front and ignore the door he has opened for you. I’m not sure why this is so difficult to resolve 🤔

crockofshite · 10/06/2024 18:00

LivelyTraybake · 09/06/2024 10:19

Oh no, I’m with your DH you sit in the back of a taxi. You’re invading their private space sitting in the front.

The front passenger seat isn't the driver's private space, the driver's seat is that.

MumMRM · 10/06/2024 18:04

Why do you generally think he should sit in the front? Is it a masculine thing to sit in the front?

OMG, all the problems in the world & this is what Mumsnet is offering me!!! A man with long legs won’t get in the front of the Uber & the wife or daughter won’t because… I have no idea why they won’t but it is a serious enough issue that other people’s opinions are required!

May I suggest when the Uber arrives you open the front passenger door & say out loud “I will get in the front to give DH with the long legs more room in the back”! Problem solved!

crockofshite · 10/06/2024 18:04

BusyCM · 09/06/2024 10:34

Exactly this!

OP could request a female driver. Perhaps her DH would jump in the front then.

Delta41 · 10/06/2024 18:45

Is the front of the car open to the elements, but the rear enclosed? Think some of the cars in Downton Abbey. If so, he should definitely sit in the front. Your hair is far more likely to be affected by wind, flying insects and general atmospheric dust. In the likely event of you wearing a hat, this is more likely to be blown off. Therefore he should definitely be in the front.
Likewise, if the UBER is a stagecoach, once again he should be in the front to “ride shotgun”. The field of fire is far less restrictive than from the inside. And him being a man means he is more likely to know how to use a shotgun.
