Now. I don’t dislike or have any hate for the woman at all. She is very pretty, talented and it sounds like she is a good person. Not my taste in music, but some of her songs sound good.

but omg. People seem to be bloody obsessed with the lady. £300 a ticket to the Edinburgh show. People queuing from 5am to get near the front.

as a guide leader in 2010 or thereabouts I remember some 12 year old girls declaring their love for her. But it seems like lots of adults seem to love her too!

Yes you don’t see thread after thread criticising Springsteen or Harry Styles do you? Can’t think why that is 🙄🙄🙄

And criticising a talented woman for being wealthy - take a look at the Catholic Churches wealth and behaviour over the years! What’s the saying involving glass houses and stones?

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 09/06/2024 20:06

@Carly944 again I just don’t think that really is reflective of anything other than a lack of knowledge of her catalogue.
“Who’s Afraid Of Little Old Me?”? “Vigilante Shit” “All Too Well (10 minute version)”? They might not be Cannibal Corpse, but calling them “nice sweet songs” doesn’t do them justice.
Whoever made the comment about mums and daughters- that’s just naked misogyny. God forbid women should bond and find common space, unless it’s in a way you deem appropriate.

TheaBrandt · 09/06/2024 20:08

“My mother is a saintly woman…but she often said she wished that you were dead”

Soooo sweet!

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 09/06/2024 20:19

As I seem to end up saying on every Taylor Swift thread, the idea that it's 'music for teens and tweens' is laughable.

I'm 50 years old. The Patti Smith line on Tortured Poets made me laugh so much because I'd seen Patti live 4 or 5 times before I'd ever even knowingly heard a Taylor Swift song. But a friend whose music taste I'd always 'respected' started talking about TS, and I actually spent some time listening to her properly - and was hooked.

You don't have to like her music (although maybe if you listen to more than just Shake It Off, you may be pleasantly surprised?) But the endless carping on here is so tedious. Everyone who starts these threads and everyone who joins in with the slagging thinks they are so edgy and unique. You're not. At best you're recycling dull, debunked 'arguments' and some of you are showing you just have no curiosity and no imagination.

Oh, and Katherine Jenkins? Give me a fucking break 😂

Carly944 · 09/06/2024 19:42

Can people see though the marketing plan behind her. She fills a marketing need.

There are no other nice middle class girls singing nice sweet songs.

All the other female singers sing much more risky songs.

They needed someone to fill the mold of sweet , innocent, middle class rich girl, who gets into no scandal.

So young teens will follow her

God how patronising and you can’t have listened to any of her songs or albums other than Shake it off

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 09/06/2024 20:24

Would just like to take a moment to say, I also cited Shake It Off as a fluff track, but it’s also an absolute party banger.
I was lucky enough to actually get an extra release ticket to see her at Murrayfield yesterday and the crowd wasn’t wild during SIO, me included 😊. And she’s a consummate pro, she was on stage for 3 hours and 20 minutes, it was freezing cold and she barely put a foot wrong.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 09/06/2024 20:24

Oh, and I don't have a dd and I've never bought a single item of merchandise or a single bit of vinyl etc.

But sure, carry on whining about how we're all brainless dullards getting shafted by an evil Satanic billionaire. I'll carry on enjoying myself with the fun kids 😂

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 09/06/2024 20:24

*WENT wild, not wasn’t wild !

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 09/06/2024 20:25

Yes, poor old SIO - it's a pure pop banger AND has a genuinely funny video too.

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 09/06/2024 20:27

@TheSandHurtsMyFeelings here here, this unmarried, childless 41 year old will join you.
You’ve actually just reminded me of a moment last night when an unknown woman of about 19 and I locked eyes during the bridge of August and had a full on, impassioned, fist- of - emotion singalong together. It was just lovely!

EmeraldRoulette · 09/06/2024 20:28

@TheSandHurtsMyFeelings the OP never returns as well.

Anyway, TS can now literally build a castle out of all the bricks they threw at her...so it's all good.

be interesting to see if there's ever similar threads about men.

I'm going to enjoy this month of the tour in particular, and hopefully there will be a costume exhibition next year.

did MN exist when there was the Kylie costume exhibition at the V&A? That probably had a moaning thread too.

edit - SIO is not my favourite but the video is such fun....that Alan Carr cats painting/drinking cider/ribbon dance interview was so funny!

NashvilleQueen · 09/06/2024 20:30

She's a singer songwriter who brings great joy to a lot of people. That's it. It's not compulsory to like her and it's also a bit dull for there to be a MN thread every few weeks slagging her off.

Jog on.

OverNexus · 09/06/2024 20:30

She's not a patch on Lulu !

Changingmynameyetagain · 08/06/2024 00:12

Yawn, yet another thread bashing Taylor Swift.
People are allowed to like who they want, my BIL once paid £2k to see his football team play in the champions league final 🤷
not my thing, I can’t stand football but he does, it’s his money and he can spend it on what he likes.

@Changingmynameyetagain i don’t understand your post. The OP isn’t bashing TS. She also isn’t saying that people aren’t allowed to like her.

Aren’t people allowed to ask why somebody is popular?

kkloo · 09/06/2024 20:33

girlfriend44 · 09/06/2024 19:40

It's not a case of whether you like it or not, she has got the second best voice in the world.
Regarding the merchandise of Taylor Swift, footy pounds for a t shirt, she can see the mums coming a mile off.
With her money she could afford to sell them for half that price.
Sheer greed it's ugly.

Says who? 😆
I don't care if people think she has the second best voice in the world or even the best voice in the world, that's just some peoples opinion, it's not fact.

I would much prefer to see Taylor Swift sing and I'm not even a massive fan of hers. I just like her.

TheaBrandt · 09/06/2024 20:35

We live in a capitalist society! Do you tick off high end shops and large corporations for their "sheer greed"?! Making a profit is what our entire society is based on like it or not - havent your noticed?! . Funny its only a problem when a young woman does it!

I've not been lucky enough to get tickets for Eras, but I went to a Swiftogeddon night a few weeks ago. 5 hours of dancing, singing and, yes, connecting with other women (all over 18, no kids allowed) in our enjoyment of this music - it was fucking fantastic. It is genuinely a community, and I love it. I actually feel kinda sorry for those who are still trapped (as I was for MANY years) in obsessing about whether something is 'cool' or not and therefore automatically default to 'ugh, Taylor Swift is so mid/meh/lame/crap'.

Just let the Swiftie joy be unbounded!😂

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 09/06/2024 20:42

Aren’t people allowed to ask why somebody is popular?

Sure. Maybe not every single week though, about the same person, recycling the same tired tropes and, often, demonstrating startling levels of misogyny, ageism etc

'I just don't get Taylor Swift' is the new 'Is my MIL a narc?'

Your joking Barbara Streisand has got the best voices in the world.

I'm a die hard musical theatre fan, but give me Taylor tickets over Barbara Streisand any day.

likethislikethat · 10/06/2024 02:59

Music festival in Finsbury Park this summer. Tickets around £100 for a place in a field with 1000 people in front of you for 3 shitters which will be full by the time you get there.

So add another £100 per ticket for VIP which gives a better area, no queuing, less toilet woes etc.

Chuck in another £50 for dedicated bus transport from a nearby provincial town (Guildford) and with 2 tickets for daughter and her best friend, £500+ has left the bank and she'll need another £100+ on the day.

Late teenage birthday !

@Changingmynameyetagain i don’t understand your post. The OP isn’t bashing TS. She also isn’t saying that people aren’t allowed to like her.

Aren’t people allowed to ask why somebody is popular?

Don't you think it's a bit weird to ask though?
Surely it's obvious that people like her music and they're entertained by her.

There's lots of bands/singers where I don't understand the appeal and some I really can't stand such as coldplay.

But why would I ask why they're popular? The answer is surely that other people love their music and that they're entertained by them even though I personally hate their music, because there is a large variety in what appeals to different people.

I don't 'get' it in that I don't experience what they experience when they listen to coldplays music but I fully understand that other people actually enjoy it which is why they're so popular.

People could list all the reasons that they love coldplay but it's not going to make me enjoy their music so why bother asking why they're so popular. It's just a weird question.

Are people not able to understand that other people like different things? Can they not use their brains to understand that some people love her songs and love singing to her songs and that her style of music really appeals to them and that it's as simple as that? Surely they all live on the same planet as the rest of us so they're aware that there are always some people who become ridiculously famous and popular and then someone else takes over?

Firefly1987 · 10/06/2024 05:20

@kkloo TS just seems to be on another level popular though. Coldplay are not routinely mentioned on BBC news just for touring or whatever. She is THE most successful music act in the world right now, I just wonder what it is about her that elevates her above all the other artists. I suppose it was similar when Adele had her big comeback and there was a point Ed Sheeran was absolutely everywhere (don't get his appeal either) but still maybe not on the same level as Taylor. I don't even follow music anymore and I'm still hearing about her!

TheaBrandt · 10/06/2024 05:32

It’s not difficult or complex 🙄. She has a vast number of new and excellent songs that appeal to a wide section of people. She is currently putting on an incredible visual show in various parts of the UK.

Elton John was on the main news with his tour as was Michael Jackson etc back in the day. Football (which I have zero interest in) is daily on the main news and talked about.

The only odd thing is this being repeatedly questioned and exclaimed over. Which frankly I can only attribute to misogyny. This conclusion is supported by the vile sexist comments from many of those questioning TS popularity - about both her and those that enjoy her music.

What a pathetic thing to say.

This is aibu, so opinions differ. Wind your rude neck in
