To not understand the fuss over Taylor Swift.

Now. I don’t dislike or have any hate for the woman at all. She is very pretty, talented and it sounds like she is a good person. Not my taste in music, but some of her songs sound good.

but omg. People seem to be bloody obsessed with the lady. £300 a ticket to the Edinburgh show. People queuing from 5am to get near the front.

as a guide leader in 2010 or thereabouts I remember some 12 year old girls declaring their love for her. But it seems like lots of adults seem to love her too!

She is very special as a songwriter and producer of her own brand. She doesn't have to be the strongest singer, just good enough to express what she wants to.

People enjoy her shows because of the music, because of the lyrics they can relate to and because the relating to feels much stronger when done together with others.

Something a fan would say but you're choice buddy.. Taylor doesn't even know you exist 🥴

of Course TS doesn’t know I exist. I don’t seek or need her approval or approbation
However, it’s irrefutable, she is an icon. Represented and reported on a daily basis
By comparison, You’re referencing a false God construct and chastising strangers about their spending habits and priorities. Your God doesn’t know you exist either

Firefly1987 · 08/06/2024 01:14

I'm sure she's got some great songs but I am perplexed at her being the biggest star in the world right now and what she supposedly has that other singers don't. Britney and Beyonce in their prime I get, but TS just seems so bland in comparison.

Of course God knows I exist and you exist and everyone on this earth. He put us here and he loves you and me and everyone ❤️. You may not seek her approval, but sure does feel wrong to splash a month's wage on a celebrity. I was simply making a point before you got triggered, that there are far more important causes in the world currently that deserve a month's wage other than Taylor swift who is sitting in her $million mansion not thinking about you. You got to agree a little with me on that at least ?

MissMelanieH · 08/06/2024 01:20

Good for her, I'm not a fan especially but I believe she's a really nice person so am happy for her.
What does confuse me slightly is that all of a sudden many 8-11 year olds at school are "swifties" and utterly obsessed with her. I can't quite understand how she suddenly has become much higher profile with this new audience... good marketing I assume?

PeonyAndBlushSuede · 08/06/2024 01:24

You don’t have to get it.

I’m sure you’ll have interests and hobbies that other people won’t understand the fuss over.

A lot of concerts are extortionate nowadays. But, if parents, adults and even teens want to buy tickets with their own money - then why not? If fans want to queue from 5am to be at the front and have a great view that’s their decision and they shouldn’t be shamed for it or mocked.

God, imagine a world where everyone was the same. How utterly depressing and boring it would be.

No. God doesn’t existing. At all. Dont agree with anything you’ve written.
Just because you don’t agree with the cost some fans pay, doesn't make it immoral or offensive to pay that amount.
Triggered? You do have a curiously provocative goady tone when you reference me,are you seeking a reaction?
Few points
£1000 is not a month wages for many in UK, The average UK wage exceeds that
Million pound property isn’t a mansion. Not in London.
I don’t ordinarily think about TS other than she is topic of this thread

I refer you to my previous post, TS most definitely does not think about me.

butterflywingss · 08/06/2024 00:59

If only people would give God an ounce of the attention that these celebrities get. I heard people were paying up to £1k for tickets. People are dying all over the world and here we are making ourselves broke to make the rich richer 🤡. There really isn't an excuse.

God. 🤣🤣🤣 Mumsnet is wild at times.

WhichEllie · 08/06/2024 01:36

Jfc. Couldn’t you just read the identical thread from what, yesterday? Rather than making yet another one about the same topic?

Expected reaction from someone who is adamant to make a point God doesn't exist, when he most certainly does. People believe in things so blindly today and no one bats an eye. Bring God in and wow, they make you delusional. However, that's a whole other topic. Also you're kind of contradicting yourself a bit, wages are on average and there ARE many people earning less than that even so yeah it can be a month's wage for some which goes back to my point. Of course, a person is entitled to give up their life savings if they wish for overly entitled and overrated things and people but doesn't make it right, especially in the context of what's happening around us. I don't think I am saying anything that bad tbh. However, maybe you're a free spirit and you see past. To end it here, I totally agree with OP, I really don't see the hype over her but everyone to their own. Have a goodnight 🙏🏻👋🏻

Zone2NorthLondon · 08/06/2024 01:47

Please do end it. It’s tiresome & preachy. You’re a bit heavy on the evangelical Gawd thing

TheaBrandt · 08/06/2024 02:15

If I never saw another post saying “I don’t like Taylor Swift” or containing the words “VAT” and “private school” combined that would be just fine by me!

coxesorangepippin · 08/06/2024 02:28

She must have an awesome promotions team

TheaBrandt · 08/06/2024 02:32

No she just is awesome hence the popularity.

I do think there is an element of misogyny to these numerous threads whining about TS. No one seems to start numerous wide eyed threads questioning why football or the Grand Prix are so popular. Both bore me to tears but accept others enjoy them so fair enough.

HelpMeGetThrough · 08/06/2024 05:04

God lost the dressing room years ago.

Inyourwildestdreams · 08/06/2024 05:29

@Partyinthedark Not all tickets were £300! I paid £95 each for mine. I’ve paid similar to see many of my favourite artists as I love live music 🤷🏻‍♀️

As for why her fan base is so big:

  • she’s a fantastic songwriter and storyteller. She writes songs that so many people can relate to.
  • it’s widely known that she is a genuinely lovely person - from her respect shown to others in the industry, to her charity work etc.
  • the amount that she gives back to her fans is huge. Let’s face it - she is absolutely at the top of her game at the moment. She could easily be doing this tour by playing about 20 songs for 1.5-2hours max like most artists and still raking in the same amount but she knows what her fans want. It’s pretty unheard of for an artist to be singing almost 50 songs and being on stage for 3.5hours each night putting on a huge show.
  • she stands up for others and what’s right regardless - lawsuits, streaming services, re-recording her albums etc etc.

I say all this as a fan, obviously. I’m 33 now and have grown up with her music. There are plenty of huge artists who have a massive following that I don’t “get” too. Each to their own 🤷🏻‍♀️

BeauSignoles · 08/06/2024 06:04

Can we please stop with these "I don't get Taylor Swift" threads? I'm not a fan either but for the love of god, how difficult is it to comprehend that people like different stuff?

BeauSignoles · 08/06/2024 06:05

"I do think there is an element of misogyny to these numerous threads whining about TS. No one seems to start numerous wide eyed threads questioning why football or the Grand Prix are so popular. Both bore me to tears but accept others enjoy them so fair enough."

YES and also this. If you go on X.com you see the same thing - shitloads of men asking why TS is popular because I don't get it/she's talentless. Fuck off!

SnapdragonToadflax · 08/06/2024 06:22

There has always been and always will be artists who capture the zeitgeist and just blow up, so suddenly they're everywhere and everyone loves them. It's not down to talent alone (though of course some is necessary), it's down to having the right music and image at the right time. She got lucky, and she's capitalising on it brilliantly.

I completely agree with @BeauSignoles , there is an element of misogyny. It's because mostly women like her, and people have been socialised to see women's interests as less than. No-one questions huge crowds seeing the Foo Fighters, yet they sell out stadiums every year. (And I say that as someone who has seen them many times.)

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 08/06/2024 06:26

ButteryNuts · 08/06/2024 01:02

@Zone2NorthLondon Okay, "something against her" might have been a bit harsh. I have nothing against her as a person but was trying to distinguish that I'm not one of the people who think 'she's talented but not my cup of tea', I genuinely don't think she's a talented singer in comparison to others.

I try listen to her because if she's so popular then I have this feeling that I must be the one that's wrong. And I'm glad I did keep listening, I do enjoy the 'Florida!!!' song (potentially just due to Florence's contributions). I quite like the one about London too.

I have plenty of time to pop some airpods in and give a listen, I'm not going to write anyone off until I've given them a proper chance. I just haven't heard anything from TS that tells me she's a good singer, yet.

I'm 44 and I love her. I personally adore her voice, whereas singers like Ariana Grande, Celine Dione, Beyonce and to some extent Adele leave me cold. I actually find Taylor's songs much harder to sing than Adele because Taylor is so strong in the lower register, where if I try to sing (and I'm normally decent) nothing comes out.

But regardless of that, with Taylor her voice is just a tiny part of it. Her songwriting is exceptional, her story telling, her lyricism. It's honestly like a drug, which is why her recent lyric "put narcotics into all of my songs, and that's why you're still singing along" is so funny.

One good example of her story telling. Listen to the first 33 seconds of The Black Dog. Within that time you'll completely have a picture of a scenario that may or may not have happened, but is something that you, as a listener, could totally understand would be devastating. That's her skill. She tells a story in a really clever, beautiful way.

Mokp · 08/06/2024 06:31

Just a mediocre singer.

Give it a few years and no one will hear of her

CaptainHaddocksPychotherapist · 08/06/2024 07:18

Taylor Swift. The icon of girlies and their mothers who tell everyone that said girly

"Is not my daughter, she's my best friend"

and

"We wear each others clothes.."

BadSkiingMum · 08/06/2024 07:33

I wasn’t really aware of her at all until the last twelve months or so, when the tour was announced and people began to talk about going!

I have listened to a couple of playlists on YouTube and don’t really get the huge hype about her. The songs are great pop, but they all sound quite similar and her voice sounds quite ‘processed’. The only standout songs for me are ‘Shake it Off’ and ‘Blank Space’.

Whereas if it had been Adele I could understand that as she has a great voice.

But people are free to like what they like!
