To wonder whether or not coriander tastes a little soapy to everyone?

I know about the 'coriander tastes like soap gene' and I know people with that who can't tolerate any bit of coriander in their food, it makes them sick etc. When you read about that online the explanation is that people with this gene hate coriander so much because the gene makes it taste like soap. But I'm happy to eat coriander and also think it tastes like soap? Like I don't think it's a BAD flavour, it's just soapy. So do I have the gene but somehow don't despise coriander for some reason? Or is it slightly soapy for everyone and people with the gene taste it significantly more strongly. What does coriander taste like to you, if it doesn't taste like soap?

I'm currently eating coriander and I can't taste any soap

TyneTeas · 07/06/2024 12:04

Tastes like aromatic tangy parsley

Pomegranatemum · 07/06/2024 12:04

Ooo, I love it! Definitely not soapy to me. More ‘fragrant’.

LessOfMe99 · 07/06/2024 12:05

It tastes vile !

Wishitsnows · 07/06/2024 12:05

Yes, has a bit of a washing up liquid flavour for me

Plump82 · 07/06/2024 12:06

I'd agree with it tasting fragrant. I used to hate it but now can't get enough of the stuff!

lovelysunshine22 · 07/06/2024 12:06

Its truly revolting and ruins any food its put with!

Serencwtch · 07/06/2024 12:06

Tastes soapy to me but don't totally avoid it. Depends how much of it is in whatever I'm eating.
Doesn't make me I'll or anything like that. Always thought it was just an acquired taste before I heard about the gene.

loropianalover · 07/06/2024 12:06

I don’t like it. A local burger place where I live uses coriander in their ‘house sauce’ and it tastes like fairy liquid to me.

pbdr · 07/06/2024 12:06

No soap taste at all. Can't really describe what it tastes like though, because it just tastes like coriander. I can't really think of a good comparison. But definitely no soap taste.

Rumballs · 07/06/2024 12:07

Like lemon fairy liquid. To the point where I'm not sure I'd be able to tell the difference 😂 I'm not a fussy eater but the smell and taste is like very strong, artificially flavoured detergent.

WelshWannabe · 07/06/2024 12:07

My ds2 and I have the "soap gene" We absolutely hate the stuff.

Dh & Ds1 like it, they don't get the soapy taste at all.

stressedespresso · 07/06/2024 12:08

I have no idea how but I went from tasting coriander properly (aka peppery, a bit tangy) to soapy overnight. Was genuinely convinced that as I was tucking into my burrito somebody had squirted washing up liquid into it! Now can’t go near the stuff with a barge pole 😷

Projectme · 07/06/2024 12:09

It's the food of the devil; vile disgusting flavour! I don't think it tastes like soap...tbh I'd rather eat soap than coriander. I can't describe the taste but it's foul. Both my kids love it. weirdos. 😂

It tastes vile !

I still recall years ago when St Delia introduced the majority of us to coriander feeling almost guilty for not liking it, a bit like back in the sixties when I first tried to eat yoghurt. Still can't stand yoghurt but I can just about tolerate a bit of coriander in a cooked dish.

SoundTheSirens · 07/06/2024 12:10

I love it, I agree with the description of 'fragrant'. But I also like gin, which to some people tastes like perfume; Parma violets, and rosewater-flavoured things so 'fragrant' foods are right up my alley.

toadinthebucket · 07/06/2024 12:10

I can't stand coriander. I can taste the tiniest bit and it makes me gag
It doesn't taste of soap though, just disgusting.

Lentilweaver · 07/06/2024 12:11

No, it doesn't taste like soap to me, but I am used to a lot of herbs in my food. I also like whole cumin seeds in my food😅

PossumintheHouse · 07/06/2024 12:12

Tastes like extra herby posh parsley. I don't get any soap vibes.

CapitalRRake · 07/06/2024 12:12

I love coriander!! I wouldn't describe it as soapy but it does have a strong distinct taste. But whatever it is I like it!

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 07/06/2024 12:12

Yeah, I taste it as soapy but still quite like it. I think I like the fragrance more than the taste though.

Hoppinggreen · 07/06/2024 12:13

Apparently it can taste like that to some people.
Pin nuts taste very burnt to me, I couldn't understand how people were happily eating them. Thankfully they seem to be less popular these days

LuubyLuu · 07/06/2024 12:14

I wi see if it's the same as the asparagus-pee gene?!

TheOneWithUnagi · 07/06/2024 12:15

Yes I agree. It's fine in food for me but I tried a little raw the other day and it definitely had a soapy taste.

crochetcatsknitting · 07/06/2024 12:15

There's a beetle in Africa that releases a pungent smell as a defence. That's what coriander tastes like to me. Utterly vile. I have to pick out the tiniest pieces in a curry because the flavour from a scrap can overpower a whole meal.

I would never use the word 'fragrant', or think of it being remotely like parsley. That sounds delicious. But coriander is yuck (seeds are fine though for me).
