To wonder whether or not coriander tastes a little soapy to everyone?

I know about the 'coriander tastes like soap gene' and I know people with that who can't tolerate any bit of coriander in their food, it makes them sick etc. When you read about that online the explanation is that people with this gene hate coriander so much because the gene makes it taste like soap. But I'm happy to eat coriander and also think it tastes like soap? Like I don't think it's a BAD flavour, it's just soapy. So do I have the gene but somehow don't despise coriander for some reason? Or is it slightly soapy for everyone and people with the gene taste it significantly more strongly. What does coriander taste like to you, if it doesn't taste like soap?

I love coriander and it doesn’t taste like soap to me.

Dil though 😫🤢 how does anyone like dil?!

MidnightMeltdown · 07/06/2024 16:51

Love coriander. Doesn't taste anything like soap to me.

Parsley on the other hand, I absolutely hate. Revolting stuff.

CasperGutman · 07/06/2024 17:09

I love coriander, but it doesn't taste much like parsley beyond a general green leafy background flavour. In terms of how I experience the flavour of coriander, I'd say "soapy" would be a better description than "tangy" or "peppery".

I honestly thought the salad bar at uni was somehow getting fairy liquid in the salads until I figured it out.

There are four groups of people as far as I can tell:

Coriander is fragrant and I like it
Coriander takes like soap and it's vile
Coriander tastes like soap and I like it anyway (I think more common if you grew up eating lots of it)
Coridander doesn't taste like soap, but I don't like it anyway.

It's only the leaves for me, the seeds are fine.
For the poster wondering about asparagus: i can smell asparagus wee, I don't think it's the same gene.

PickAChew · 07/06/2024 17:47

It just tastes zesty, to me.

PickAChew · 07/06/2024 17:53

I can also smell asparagus wee. DH can't. Iove the taste of parma violets, Turkish delight etc.

The flavour I can't tolerate is raw celery. I'm fine with it cooked, so long as it's been killed thoroughly, so I always put it into a recipe before anything else.

Frlrlrubert · 07/06/2024 18:09

I love Parma violets and cherry lips and things that taste sort of like soap smells. But coriander tastes of actual fairy liquid, not at all pleasant.

MarthaDunstable · 07/06/2024 18:12

While we're on the subject of asparagus wee: is the issue that some people have a gene that makes their wee smell of asparagus and some don't, or that it has the same effect on everyone but some people can't smell it?

DH and I are on opposite sides of the genetic divide (I can smell it, he can't) and I'm sometimes tempted, in the spirit of scientific inquiry, to leave the toilet after I've eaten asparagus and drag him in to ask if the room smells funny, but I can never remember at the crucial moment, which is probably just as well.

The other odd thing is that he finds the smell of the anti-flea stuff we put on the cats overpowering but I literally can't smell it at all.

Frlrlrubert · 07/06/2024 18:14

As far as I know everyone has 'asparagus wee' after eating asparagus, but some people can't smell it.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/06/2024 18:16

Not soapy at all to me

Vates · 07/06/2024 18:16

I love coriander and it doesn't taste anything like soap to me.

ShiftySandDune · 07/06/2024 18:17

I adore coriander. Doesn’t taste like soap at all to me. I agree with fragrant as a description. Deeply herbal. It’s brilliant stuff.

Sooverthemill · 07/06/2024 18:17

I have the gene ( and the one for whiskey) and I love coriander. It doesn’t taste soapy to me. So I cannot explain it

morphlerana · 07/06/2024 18:18

I love coriander. Fresh. I have it daily in my curries.

The only time I ever thought it smelt/tasted abit weird/soapy was when it had been left too long and I should have threw it away

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 07/06/2024 18:18

I love fresh coriander but it can taste horrid if it’s old and past it’s best.

AgnesX · 07/06/2024 18:22

Nope, I love coriander especially on Indian takeaway foods 😁

NotSoFunThis · 07/06/2024 18:22

I’m with you. It definitely tastes soapy to me but also fresh and fragrant so I love it.

longdistanceclaraclara · 07/06/2024 18:22

I love coriander, no soapiness for me

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/06/2024 18:33

It's disgusting stuff and ruins any food it's dumped on. I rated like perfume to me. Yuk.

Gymnopedie · 07/06/2024 18:35

I'm in the soap group. There's nothing fresh or fragrant about it as far as I'm concerned, just pure Lifebuoy.

I can also spot an artificial sweetener (including stevia which isn't technically artificial) at 50 paces.

DappledThings · 07/06/2024 18:43

Doesn't taste soapy at all to me. I love it.

StormingNorman · 07/06/2024 18:47

LOVE coriander and use quite a lot raw on top of salads and curries. Never tasted soapy to me. It makes my Dad retch 😂

DiscoBeat · 07/06/2024 18:55

I love it, but the family are divided. When I make curries I put a pot of coriander in a bowl for people to choose. Ground and seeded seems to be ok so I do use that.

Theweepywillow · 07/06/2024 18:55

Can’t get my head round anyone thinking it tastes soapy and still eating it.🤮

i can’t stand the stuff, but im not sure id describe it as soapy, more its a absolutely foul bitter taste. I can taste one leaf in a meal and it contaminates the whole thing.

sticklegs · 07/06/2024 18:59

Not sure if you can read this photo of a book I have but apparently there are different compounds and different genes involved in the coriander one. I am not a fan so won’t try to love it like it suggests …
