To wonder whether or not coriander tastes a little soapy to everyone?

I know about the 'coriander tastes like soap gene' and I know people with that who can't tolerate any bit of coriander in their food, it makes them sick etc. When you read about that online the explanation is that people with this gene hate coriander so much because the gene makes it taste like soap. But I'm happy to eat coriander and also think it tastes like soap? Like I don't think it's a BAD flavour, it's just soapy. So do I have the gene but somehow don't despise coriander for some reason? Or is it slightly soapy for everyone and people with the gene taste it significantly more strongly. What does coriander taste like to you, if it doesn't taste like soap?

I love coriander and it has a sweet perfumey flavour to me.

Prawncow · 07/06/2024 19:02

I love it, my sibling hates it.

JoJothegerbil · 07/06/2024 19:34

I love it. It doesn't taste soapy to me, more fresh and citrusy. Mango, red onion and coriander salsa is the dog's nuts.

BettyBlueHat · 07/06/2024 19:54

I dislike coriander and can taste the tiniest amount. Does not taste of soap.

Sage however 🤢 That tastes of soap. As does lemongrass is utterly disgusting. I love Thai food but lemongrass can ruin a meal for me.

I think I may have been eating this 🤔

You clearly do not like Indian food op.

fishonabicycle · 07/06/2024 20:08

Love coriander and no - not soapy at all.

Devilsmommy · 07/06/2024 20:09

I only really like it fried, can't say I've tasted soap though 😀

Hotnamehere · 07/06/2024 20:09

It doesn't taste like soap to me but I still can't stand the taste of it.

Pallisers · 07/06/2024 20:15

It tastes soapy to me but I do eat it. I would never sprinkle it on something but I make a really nice sauce with avocado, parsley, garlic and coriander and I don't mind it in that.

velveteens · 07/06/2024 20:17

Apparently it's a genetic thing if it tastes "soapy"! My husband and friend both have this reaction....

EC22 · 07/06/2024 20:18

I love it.
theres no soap

TheHateIsNotGood · 07/06/2024 20:21

Have always liked coriander since a local greengrocer sold bunches (like watercress) where I lived in the 1980s. It added a very nice taste to the various marinaded dishes I was making at the time - before 'cooking' became trendy.

Not sure where the soap taste comes from but as different foods can taste differently to different people I don't deny that to some it might taste like soap. And then nowadays many things lack flavour, including coriander and very few places would still sell it in bunches.

I do try and grow my own coriander from seed as it can produce well in both pots and in the ground; with varying results depending on the usual climactic conditions, slugs and, for a time, chickens, who will clear it given half the chance.

I also recommend growing Dill - you can cheer up the blandest bit of fish with it.

It's a bit soapy for me but also kind of orange y yuk, I can't stand it, makes my mouth feel weird and once I've eaten even a tiny bit I can't get rid of that horrible feeling for ages no matter what I eat afterwards or how many times I clean my teeth, it's even horrible to touch when chopping or tearing it up, so I avoid it now , horrible stuff!

maw1681 · 07/06/2024 20:24

No not to me, I love coriander and I feel sorry for people who have the coriander soap gene!

stickthewellyin · 07/06/2024 20:25

I love it but the kids and dh all complain that it tastes soapy, i just can't understand it. One of my favourite foods is a coriander, tomato and red onion salad.

ExtraOnions · 07/06/2024 20:27

Tastes like soap to me, and my daugher .. it’s genetic, just one of those things. I hate it, ergh

TheHateIsNotGood · 07/06/2024 20:37

Some might prefer the taste of cilantro...instead.

BambiSkate · 07/06/2024 20:39

Absolute love fresh coriander and it completely tastes like soap

BobbyBiscuits · 07/06/2024 20:39

I love it. If it was soapy it would be gross. Mint is more soapy if anything?

WilliamButt · 07/06/2024 20:43

I used to hate coriander but now quite like it and use it liberally (where appropriate). But back when I hated it I didn't think it was soapy. So I probably lack the gene but just didn't like it. It's a very very particular flavour.

I have no idea how but I went from tasting coriander properly (aka peppery, a bit tangy) to soapy overnight. Was genuinely convinced that as I was tucking into my burrito somebody had squirted washing up liquid into it! Now can’t go near the stuff with a barge pole 😷

My husband went off coriander after he had COVID.

Some taste things like this are genetic, I believe.

BogRollBOGOF · 07/06/2024 20:50

I find corriander fresh and fragrant. The leaves a bit more zesty than the seeds.

It's artificial sweetners that taste of soap to me, and the bastards stick right on the back of my tounge so I can taste their awfulness every time I swallow for hours after. They're much harder to dodge than corriander!

Proseccoagain · 07/06/2024 20:54

Absolutely loathe it, tastes very musty to me. Always ask for Indian meals without it.

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 07/06/2024 21:00

I love coriander! Can't get enough. I'm one of those that can't eat fresh cod 🤢
