Please say what you think. Vinted asked NDN to verify her ID, which she’s happy to do, or they won’t let her withdraw the £300 she’s made selling her stuff.

Life on disability benefits not so easy right now. Her £300 a big deal.

But she can’t do the checks - cos the only ID Vinted accepts is a passport or driver’s licence, neither of which she has as she can’t travel. All the other ID proofs - she has loads - Vinted won’t accept.

We’ve appealed to Vinted three times and they won’t budge. Mangopay, their money platform, refer us to
Vinted.

So Vinted are keeping NDN’s money. They say ‘We hope you will understand’.

YABU = I’m with Vinted.
YANBU = Shame on Vinted.

@AllTipAndNoIceberg

But what do you suggest they do? It’s a legal requirement.
Do what other organisations do. Accept Voter Card, Citizen Card or any of the other official photo ID cards.

If you can use one to vote you should be able to use one to get your money from Vinted.

What has her disability got to do with it?
Most people with disabilities have ID!

Because being disabled means you often don't work and rely on benefits, and if you dont travel you dont need to spend £100 on a passport you will never need, I think it's pretty clear and you have to be super thick to not make that link.

Would you expect say an American bank to accept a voter id card as proper proof?

Thanks to all the massively helpful posters - we are truly grateful to you.

Vinted’s final solution was the autosent link ‘upload your passport’ for the nth time.

A human responded ‘thanks for understanding’ when they confirmed the £ was being kept.

It's completely insane that the NDN should need to waste money on a passport to ACCESS HER OWN MONEY.
I'd see whether a consumer rights organisation or Martin Lewis could help you. She is not laundering the money and ironically some of the solutions suggested on here would be much closer in terms of dodgy transactions.
Vinted/Mangopay must be able to comply with Money Laundering Regs without permanently depriving customers of their own money (and making a tidy profit in the process).
They keep the money and they are profiting from this.
Angry on behalf of you and your NDN OP.

Can you sell her a "blouse" for £300 or will they take money for the transaction?

That’s money laundering. We’re trying to
avoid that and do the thing legally. Vinted won’t let us.

What other photo ID does she have?

Its not discrimination to only accept legit photo ID.

Not everyone has a passport but everyone needs some form of photo ID for almost everything these days.

I would tell her to get a provisional license for £30, so she can claim the rest of the money.

It will also be very handy in the future for other uses to prove her identity.

Is it? I don't know the technical definition of money laundering but I thought it was to do with you earning the money illegally and the processing it through a legit business. Your daughter hasn't earned it illegally. I'd do this option.

LakeTiticaca · 05/06/2024 20:58

I can't remember having to verify when withdrawing from vinted

NegativeNelly · 05/06/2024 20:58

I think that's disgusting! Is it something the ombudsman could help with at all? or trading standards?

Miriad · 05/06/2024 18:01

Everyone can get a passport though, so there’s no reason for anyone not to have photo id 🤷‍♀️

Have you seen how much passports cost though?? It's a lot to pay to only be using it as a form of ID.

Supersimkin2 · 05/06/2024 21:01

@TwilightSkies what has her disability got to do with it?

She can’t travel as a result of disability. So an organisation specifically and only asking for ID that is used for travelling isn’t that helpful cos she can’t get a driving licence and couldn’t ever need a passport. She has all the other entirely acceptable ID used for larger and more established orgs eg uk govt..

I know it’s confusing to some, but you don’t need to have every disability there is to be dIscriminated against for disability.

As an example, if your DC used a wheelchair, and you tried to get her into a concert hall, how would you feel
if the ticket attendant said ‘I’m autistic, for which I get PIP, and I manage the 172 steps fine.

‘How dare you claim to be discriminated against?’

Sorry haven’t read all the replies, but does she have a blue badge? Would that be acceptable, I noticed it was one of the permitted IDs for voting.

Nope.

Yabu - these rules are needed to prevent selling stolen items etc

Londonrach1 · 05/06/2024 21:03

Has your neighbour got an expired passport. Tbh it's in vinted terms and conditions and not linked to disability. Reason why I don't use vinted.

Why would a company and bank registered in a foreign country take a U.K. blue badge as photo id?

Could you get a close friend or family with ID to set up an account, you buy something for £300 from them, they take out the money and give it back to you? Bit of a work around but would save you getting a passport?

I was about to suggest this!

It’s not a UK organisation, and neither is its payment provider, as has been explained on the thread. So there is no particular reason why you “should be able to” do that.

Casimira · 05/06/2024 21:05

OP, you seem to have missed the many posters who have suggested she changes the name on the account to a trusted person (you?) who does have ID. Someone upthread said this is exactly what she did.

mybeesarealive · 05/06/2024 21:05

You may have a claim for disability discrimination (indirect discrimination, where practices that might be otherwise lawful disadvantage a disabled person).

Delawear · 05/06/2024 21:06

Complain to Martin Lewis, Trading Standards, Guardian money, whoever else can apply some pressure to Vinted. Tweet them, plaster their social media with complaints. Make a fuss.

Wonder if it would count as disability discrimination?

Well she clearly DOES need a passport for some things - like recognised photo ID

No, it really really wouldn't.

You're just embarrassing yourself here with statements like this.
