Please say what you think. Vinted asked NDN to verify her ID, which she’s happy to do, or they won’t let her withdraw the £300 she’s made selling her stuff.

Life on disability benefits not so easy right now. Her £300 a big deal.

But she can’t do the checks - cos the only ID Vinted accepts is a passport or driver’s licence, neither of which she has as she can’t travel. All the other ID proofs - she has loads - Vinted won’t accept.

We’ve appealed to Vinted three times and they won’t budge. Mangopay, their money platform, refer us to
Vinted.

So Vinted are keeping NDN’s money. They say ‘We hope you will understand’.

YABU = I’m with Vinted.
YANBU = Shame on Vinted.

I think the point op is trying to make is that the disabled friend has no need for a passport outside of this situation, and would struggle to find the money to get a passport in order to release the funds. Meaning that vinted have effectively locked her 300 pounds behind a 90 pounds (I don't know what passports cost any more) paywall. Though I do think a provisional license is much cheaper.

Op you friend will need to get ID anyway to vote in the up coming election. Could you help her by paying for the passport or provisional driving license and being reimbursed from the 300 when vinted release funds? She can apply online for both and it's way way way less faff than the paper forms. If she goes for the cheaper provisional driving license I think they only take about 10 days to arrive. That way she has ID for future things as well as this situation.

OhmygodDont · 05/06/2024 18:12

It’s not because she’s disabled ffs.

how has she gotten though her entire life not needing a passport or license for id. Even banks want photo id 99% of the time when I’ve been in to open an account. Unless for a minor.

Miriad · 05/06/2024 17:58

Yes.

Thanks for confirming @Miriad

As it's in the T&C, without the accepted/required forms of ID, your friend/NDN should have sold her stuff elsewhere.

It's unfortunate that she's learnt the hard way. But it's not really an issue of 'disability vs Vinted'. It's about not reading and adhering to the T&C.

Framing it as a 'disability issue' is wrong. I say this as a person with multiple disabilities as defined by the Equalities Act 2010.

OhmygodDont · 05/06/2024 18:13

Hell even Roblox only accept a passport 😅 so my 15 year old has a passport to make games.

blackcherryconserve · 05/06/2024 18:13

OP have you/NDN emailed Vinted legal department?

Anotherparkingthread · 05/06/2024 18:14

Also I think vinted has their hands tied by the law. There are strict rules in place to prevent money laundering. Money can be 'washed' via sites like vinted, so they have a legal obligation to hold ID and bank details for all sellers. Unfortunately it is the law.

As I said above. Help her apply for some ID so she can use it for all future needs as well.

SilentSilhouette · 05/06/2024 18:14

Vinted are correct and it does say in the wallet T&Cs that you'll need to verify your identification for money laundering purposes (by law) and will need drivers license, passport, bank statements etc..

I suggest she pays £34 to get a provisional drivers licence or apply for a passport to get the £300.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/06/2024 18:15

Presumably rhe NDN will use one of the other accepted Government IDs to vote, like the Voter ID card.

Flickersy · 05/06/2024 18:17

FGS they're not withholding her money because she's disabled.

They are adhering to money laundering regulations and KYC procedures which they have to by law.

Supersimkin2 · 05/06/2024 18:19

Vinted’s ID checks in the
t&c are passport/driver license and proofs of residency and govt letters - Vinted specifically gives a range. You don’t only need a passport or dl in any other country.

Voter authority cert for the election - Or a freedom pass, which is a whole lot harder to get than a passport.

OP have you/NDN emailed Vinted legal department?

For what? It's in their T&C's, they have valid reasons for only accepting photo ID, they're literally not doing anything illegal.

It's frustrating and upsetting, but completely and utterly legal.

Supersimkin2 · 05/06/2024 18:20

Not according to
their TCs.

ApoodlecalledPenny · 05/06/2024 18:22

Also, she can spend the money on Vinted - which is what I did - so it’s not totally lost.

Cherry8809 · 05/06/2024 18:23

Rather manipulative to suggest she can’t withdraw the funds because she’s disabled.

She can’t withdraw the funds because she doesn’t have the required forms of ID to verify her account.

Passports and ID cards/provisional licenses are as readily available and accessible to disabled people as they are to able bodied people.

Any sympathy I had for you/niece due to Vinted being arses in general disappeared the moment she accused Vinted of withholding money because she's disabled.

What a crock of shit.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 05/06/2024 18:31

It's a terrible situation OP and I feel for her.

However, I don't believe this is about her disability, it's about a lack of acceptable photo ID which her disability has nothing to do with.

Trishna99 · 05/06/2024 18:31

Freedom pass isn't an official form of ID in thr same sense as a passport or driving license, BRP, etc. The other forms you listed aren't photographic. Vinted are just doing their due diligence.

Flickersy · 05/06/2024 18:33

Not only that, but it's likely to put Vinted / the payment processor on even higher alert.

Pressure tactics using emotive language is a hallmark of scammers.

PuttingDownRoots · 05/06/2024 18:37

The Voter ID card was introduced as it was acknowledged that not everyone is eligible for a Driving Licence and not everyone can afford to travel. Its Government issued. So why not accept that?

footgoldcycle · 05/06/2024 18:40

FourOfDiamonds · 05/06/2024 18:09

Could you get a close friend or family with ID to set up an account, you buy something for £300 from them, they take out the money and give it back to you? Bit of a work around but would save you getting a passport?

That would probably be classed as money laundering

imnotsickbutimnotwell · 05/06/2024 18:41

I would always say never keep a balance in Vinted. They are not a bank and also based in Lithuania so not subject to financial regulations. I always withdraw my balance after each sale.

It is in their terms that after a certain amount you need to provide ID in order to withdraw money. This is for anti money laundering regulations and is pretty standard.

What people do to get round this is change the name on the account to a relative that has ID then use theirs then withdraw the money.

AllTipAndNoIceberg · 05/06/2024 18:44

Disabled people face a lot of discrimination and it must be immensely frustrating. But this is clearly not that.

It’s disingenuous to suggest they are doing this because she is disabled. Really unhelpful in a broader sense too, because it contributes to the existing climate of skepticism people often face when they really are experiencing discrimination.

Supersimkin2 · 05/06/2024 18:44

Asking for only travelling ids when you’re too disabled to
travel and don’t/can’t get them
is pretty mean. It is discriminatory.

Maybe not discrimination for all disabilities, but for hers, no
doubt.
