Please say what you think. Vinted asked NDN to verify her ID, which she’s happy to do, or they won’t let her withdraw the £300 she’s made selling her stuff.

Life on disability benefits not so easy right now. Her £300 a big deal.

But she can’t do the checks - cos the only ID Vinted accepts is a passport or driver’s licence, neither of which she has as she can’t travel. All the other ID proofs - she has loads - Vinted won’t accept.

We’ve appealed to Vinted three times and they won’t budge. Mangopay, their money platform, refer us to
Vinted.

So Vinted are keeping NDN’s money. They say ‘We hope you will understand’.

YABU = I’m with Vinted.
YANBU = Shame on Vinted.

It's in their T&Cs that you need official photo ID.

Disabled people can absolutely have passports.

It's not disability discrimination, it's that the account holder didn't read the T&Cs when they signed up.

Supersimkin2 · 05/06/2024 18:45

No it isn’t - it turns up on the help pages only after something’s gone wrong. She didn’t sign up to
this.

The Voter ID card was introduced as it was acknowledged that not everyone is eligible for a Driving Licence and not everyone can afford to travel. Its Government issued. So why not accept that?

@PuttingDownRoots - I believe you can only use the Voter ID card as proof of identity for voting purposes and not for anything else, think it's in the T&Cs

Asking for only travelling ids when you’re too disabled to
travel and don’t/can’t get them
is pretty mean. It is discriminatory.

Maybe not discrimination for all disabilities, but for hers, no
doubt.

But what do you suggest they do? It’s a legal requirement.

They can’t handwave it away because it seems ‘mean’ to a person who is perfectly entitled to a passport but has never previously had a reason to acquire one.

It's very clearly stated in the "selling on Vinted" instructions.

OhmygodDont · 05/06/2024 18:49

Surely she can just buy clothes with the money she’s made selling clothes and that saves her in bank money.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 05/06/2024 18:49

OP what happens if everyone in this thread agrees with you? Not that I think this is going to happen.

It won’t change anything for your neighbor or Vinted. Perhaps your energy is best used to help your neighbor get one of the required documents.

Your friend could never travel in a car an adapted one and go on the ferry to say France?

Because plently of disabled people so travel, in wheelchairs, on oxygen and all sorts of things with various medical equipment.

Supersimkin2 · 05/06/2024 18:53

@TwattyMcFuckFace Of course - most people use their passport as a novelty trivet.

It's not discriminatory on the grounds of disability. The T&C specify what ID is required. She didn't have the forms of required ID and she does not want to purchase a passport for ID purposes, so she should have sold her stuff elsewhere.

Your use of emotive language, and framing this as disability discrimination is not helpful.

See this just makes you look very silly because you know people use it as official ID.

I agree with a PP, why not spend your time helping your neighbour apply for a passport?

You can be as sarcastic as you want, it doesn't change the law and it doesn't help your friend.

What was the solution offered by Vinted, and why isn't that an option?

Why can't you help your friend apply for a passport?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 05/06/2024 18:58

Oh well at least we’ve hit the snarky portion of the thread.

WayOutOfLine · 05/06/2024 18:59

There's a few solutions here, but none of them involve Vinted changing their position on this which they appear to hold due to money laundering regs around photo ID, so you could a) change the account holders name to yours or someone else's, show the ID then change it back (suggested upthread) b) your neighbour could buy clothes off Vinted down to a certain balance and then withdraw, that might be too much clothing though or c) get one of the documents required so that going forward, she's always got the preferred form of ID for everything (voter ID is only valid for voting).

Sucks, but she'd still be £200 up and have a passport for the next ten years to use as ID and/or go away if the opportunity arose.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 05/06/2024 19:01

I would focus on mangopay, as they are regulated by the fca. Quote the consumer duty act and make sure they are aware that you expect this to be a regulated complaint against them, not vinted, with Financial Ombudsman rights.

Under the Consumer Duty, firms should act to deliver good outcomes for all customers, including those with characteristics of vulnerability.

Banks etc will always ask for passport or driving licence first, but need to have ways to verify people who don't have them. The issue disproportionately affects the elderly, disabled and people with very little money, so absolutely falls under vulnerable customer regulations. The regulator doesn't state what documents companies need to ask for, so this is entirely down to policy set by each company.

NotTHATMelania · 05/06/2024 19:02

I'd go with what a couple of other posters have said: you, or someone trustworthy who has an account they CAN withdraw funds from (or even several people) sell her something (or a series of somethings) for £50 a time until you've got all the money for her.

iamtheblcksheep · 05/06/2024 19:03

I would be interested to know how their terms and conditions align with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Id normally say hard lines but in this case their attitude is appalling.

Can you see if the mail will pick up your case? Their money section is pretty good at getting money back

Elieza · 05/06/2024 19:03

You need ID to vote so everyone who doesn't have it will presumably want to get some form of acceptable ID in time for that

You can get free Voter ID for that.

Sahara123 · 05/06/2024 19:07

Anotherparkingthread · 05/06/2024 18:12

I think the point op is trying to make is that the disabled friend has no need for a passport outside of this situation, and would struggle to find the money to get a passport in order to release the funds. Meaning that vinted have effectively locked her 300 pounds behind a 90 pounds (I don't know what passports cost any more) paywall. Though I do think a provisional license is much cheaper.

Op you friend will need to get ID anyway to vote in the up coming election. Could you help her by paying for the passport or provisional driving license and being reimbursed from the 300 when vinted release funds? She can apply online for both and it's way way way less faff than the paper forms. If she goes for the cheaper provisional driving license I think they only take about 10 days to arrive. That way she has ID for future things as well as this situation.

Edited

You don’t need to pay for ID to vote, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate on the Gov website. Which doesn’t help the OP’s friend obviously. And having to pay for a passport or driving license she doesn’t need is nuts !
Echoing what someone has already said, can OP put up something for sale for £300 , her friend buys it and OP reimbursed her ? So convoluted it’s nuts , but no idea what else she can do .
Not good, Vinted , not impressed.

OolongTeaDrinker · 05/06/2024 19:07

It’s really shit, but if it’s in their T&Cs there’s not much she can do. I’m surprised Vinted let her get up to £300 without this being flagged before, I remember having to verify my identity quite early on in my Vinted use. Unless she sold a single item for £300?

Happyher · 05/06/2024 19:08

This is probably in breach of equality law - they should make a reasonable adjustment for your daughter. Even the government with its new voting id law allow ways without photo id. Check with your local CAB for legal advice
