Please say what you think. Vinted asked NDN to verify her ID, which she’s happy to do, or they won’t let her withdraw the £300 she’s made selling her stuff.

Life on disability benefits not so easy right now. Her £300 a big deal.

But she can’t do the checks - cos the only ID Vinted accepts is a passport or driver’s licence, neither of which she has as she can’t travel. All the other ID proofs - she has loads - Vinted won’t accept.

We’ve appealed to Vinted three times and they won’t budge. Mangopay, their money platform, refer us to
Vinted.

So Vinted are keeping NDN’s money. They say ‘We hope you will understand’.

YABU = I’m with Vinted.
YANBU = Shame on Vinted.

A provisional licence is £34 so she might as well do that. It is shit though.

Not the point of the thread but they are £62.50 in Northern Ireland, very unfair!

Vinted should be able to accept alternative forms of ID.

Whatineed · 05/06/2024 19:16

Can you sell her a "blouse" for £300 or will they take money for the transaction?

socialdilemmawhattodo · 05/06/2024 19:18

There is so much misinformation on this thread. Photo id is not a legal requirement in the uk. The government provide a list of documents that are acceptable to prove identity and then again separately to prove address, I have been an executor twice without current photo id. I have been able to open an executor bank account. And I have been able to transact large sums of money again without a photo id.
So I believe genuinely that vinted and their payments organisation are probably in breach of legislation (which one is probably a decent question). The FCA are all at the moment for supporting consumers. The payments organisation would be registered with them. So worth seeing what the actual requirements are rather than a company's own internal process. PS I do now have a new passport because I need it. Not because some organisation cannot be bothered to understand what is legally required for identity verification rather than their internal preference.

Simonjt · 05/06/2024 19:24

Vinted ade very clear what ID is required, seems unwise to agree to this the moan when a rule you agreed to is enforced.

A very close friend has an aquired brain injury, so he cannot drive and is unlikely to go abroad, he still has a passport as he is aware he will sometimes need photo ID.

Portakalkedi · 05/06/2024 19:27

I didn't have to provide either of these when I joined Vinted a few months ago to sell. Ridiculous though that some places do require either passport or driving licence, as there are people who have neither. About time we all had ID cards if you ask me (cue wailing and gnashing of teeth about loss of personal liberty blah blah .... )

H0ghedge · 05/06/2024 19:29

Has your friend emailed their legal email address? (Not that I've had much luck via that route)

Would your friend consider bringing a small claim? The fee would be £35 I think.

WayOutOfLine · 05/06/2024 19:30

Vinted and Mangopay are not based in the UK and are following these regulations:

FourOfDiamonds · 05/06/2024 18:09

Could you get a close friend or family with ID to set up an account, you buy something for £300 from them, they take out the money and give it back to you? Bit of a work around but would save you getting a passport?

Excellent idea!

Yes definitely seems like the most sensible route.

How would that work if she's signed up to the clear T&Cs?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 05/06/2024 19:52

Supersimkin2 · 05/06/2024 18:45

No it isn’t - it turns up on the help pages only after something’s gone wrong. She didn’t sign up to
this.

It's 8.2 on the T&Cs

ValleyClouds · 05/06/2024 19:58

As a disabled person people shrieking DISCRIMINATION when no such thing has taken place is damaging for all disabled people as a whole minority.

She is eligible for a passport and should get one.

You're not unreasonable to say Vinted have been difficult, but prejudiced? No. YABVU.

JanglingJack · 05/06/2024 19:58

I'm disabled, cannot travel but have blue badge with photo (if someone should drive me), bus pass just because I can and it's another form of photo ID, and then still had to get a passport just to verify my ID now that kids are getting their first adult ones.

It isn't about disability, she just doesn't have the correct ID.

Get the correct ID. Sorted.

Dont get it, lose 300 quid.

H0ghedge · 05/06/2024 20:03

PracticeorPractise · 05/06/2024 19:42

How would that work if she's signed up to the clear T&Cs?

It might work because (1) in many cases companies settle when they get a claim as it costs way more in legal fees to defend than to pay out; and (2) it may be possible to argue that the T&Cs are unfair in which case they would be unenforceable (I emphasize the "may"). Just because you agree to T&Cs doesn't mean that they are enforceable (even if they are clear).

However I do agree that the easiest solution would be to just get a provisional driving licence or passport. Surely needed (or at least useful) for other purposes too.

TheFairyCaravan · 05/06/2024 20:07

I’m a disabled person with a driving licence and a passport.

There’s no discrimination here. It’s in the terms and conditions which she should have read before she signed up. She could have always withdrawn smaller amounts from her balance instead of letting it mount it up, too. The choice was hers, but she chose not too. Now she’s in a pickle of her own making.

ParadiseLaundry · 05/06/2024 20:09

Apologies as haven't read all the replies but I encountered the same problem as I didn't have any photo id at all either.

I changed the name on the vinted account to my husband's and used his photo driving licence to verify the account and they accepted it. Could she get someone else to do this for her?

itsgettingweird · 05/06/2024 20:19

It's not as easy as "just get a drivers license" when you have a disability.

It took over a year for my son to get approved and has to be renewed every 3 years.

And some disabilities prevent you from driving.

This is why some form of national ID card would be so much better.

When I lived in Spain I could use my NIE for anything!

elliejjtiny · 05/06/2024 20:23

I can't drive or travel so I don't have a passport or a driving licence. The only time it's a problem is when ordering my repeat prescriptions. And I'm reluctant to pay £100 or whatever it is now just so I can order my prescriptions online.

Tarquina · 05/06/2024 20:28

Miriad · 05/06/2024 18:01

Everyone can get a passport though, so there’s no reason for anyone not to have photo id 🤷‍♀️

That is not the case. My friend is disabled and applied for a passport purely to be able to prove her ID is situations like this because she was as time and time again for either a passport or a driving license and she does not drive. She reluctantly agreed you would have to pay the £80 to get a passport.

However when she applied she was told that it was a requirement for her to appear at the Passport Office in Brighton in person in order to have her photograph verified as being her. The kind of disability she has means that she is not able to travel so that means she cannot get a passport.

drainthebath · 05/06/2024 20:35

TwilightSkies · 05/06/2024 17:51

What has her disability got to do with it?
Most people with disabilities have ID!

If you read properly you will know that they only accept passports and drivers license which due to her disability she has no need for so hasn't got.

drainthebath · 05/06/2024 20:37

@Miriad

If you are never going to travel you wouldn't get a passport.
There are other forms of photo id. It's just that Vinted won't accept them

ByNavyOtter · 05/06/2024 20:38

Small Claims Court! It is a 35 quid fee but I garuntee you this will be sorted immediately once its with Vinted's legal department.

drainthebath · 05/06/2024 20:40

WalkingonWheels · 05/06/2024 18:06

I'm disabled and don't travel. I still have a passport because in many cases, it's the only accepted form of ID.

This isn't ableist. Not having a passport has nothing whatsoever to do with disability.

A passport is an official travel document. There are many forms of identification that should be acceptable. It's ridiculous to have to get a travel document for the sole purpose of using id

OP will they accept a Citizen Card? Google it

But it's the T&Cs they signed up to?

OhmygodDont · 05/06/2024 20:41

It will be because vinted and its banking system are not U.K. based. So they are accepting only universal id types passports and drivers license.

Otherwise they would have to familiarise every single Id type of Every single country.
