So we went out for a lovely afternoon waffle at the fabulous waffle house in St Michaels (St Albans). We don't go out much so it was a real treat.

Middle aged almost (mid 50's) couple next to us - him in burberry jacket, Hackett scarf and shirt. Her with £800 quid Chloe bag.

They were on the table next to us and came in the same time. They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was. They had virtually the same as us. Their bill came to £16 - they paid with a twenty. They kept the change. The bloke said what about a tip. The woman said "that'll do, she's only young".

When they left they put 40p on the table for the waitress

I wouldn't know what a Chloe bag looks like, either.

so saying you hate someone and referring to them as scum based on the fact they clearly have more than you is not nasty km?

southeastastra · 06/04/2008 21:12

or harpenden. poncetastic now.

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 21:12

I didn't say she couldn't afford to live on her minimum, her in particular, I said that as the south-east was expensive it was difficult on minimum wage.

I am not particularly materialistic, I noticed what she was wearing/end of the conversation because of the 40p tip and her comment that the waitres was 'only young' and I was shocked by it.

I only said this part of the country was expensive to explain why I thought the tip was unreasonable as lots of mumsnetters don't live down south - I don't live in St Albans (can't and wouldn't want to afford it). Not because I'm boasting (I'm not wealthy - student nurse and volunteer)

cotswold village of Snowshill where "Bridget Jones Diary" was filmed. Cotswold nice many of the the primrose hill Fag&ChloeBag hanger on's eg sadie frost, Kate moss have cotswold pads (caused much consternation)

Tutter · 06/04/2008 21:14

"wouldn't want to afford it"

oohhhhh-kayyyy

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 21:14

They said the service was fantastic and still left a 40p tip.

OP posts:
Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 21:15

Not if affording it meant being like them as I may disappear up my own arse.....

OP posts:
MsSparkle · 06/04/2008 21:15

I live down south, it's not that friggin expensive.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 21:15

laurie but you clearly name checked the labelled accessories -why? tbh dont reckon i would notice (too busy scoffing waffles)

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 21:16

Right, off to Samaritans now to listen to men masturbating for the night.

Thanks all for letting me rant

OP posts:
Tutter · 06/04/2008 21:16

yes such handbag angst

why

jealous of cvourse

expatinscotland · 06/04/2008 21:16

I see I will need to google this Cotswolds place to determine where exactly it is.

I didn't see those Bridget Jones films because I'd rather chew my own tongue than endure Renee Zellweger, that Firth person or Hugh Grant.

But if I had a million pounds I wouldn't be in teh UK at all so there goes my Cotswolds fantasies.

bookkeeper · 06/04/2008 21:16

This thread is fascinating - I've read so many threads on MN where posters have been criticised for being insensitive about money when a lot of people on here are really struggling (one famous thread springs to mind - can't remember the OP's name though grr). Surely this is just the same? Agree scum was a bit strong though.

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 06/04/2008 21:17

I understand your POV LFC. Don't be so mean to her.

harpsichordcarrier · 06/04/2008 21:17

oh dear, I think
Lauriefc is getting a bit of a vicious kicking here, with not much justification tbh.
she did say she was just letting off steam, she did say she was being unreasonable.
I think she has got the message and maybe you could all stop now she is bleeding from the head

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 21:17

laurie what an odd thing to say?

Quattrocento · 06/04/2008 21:18

Oh Laurie - I used to do that! You wonder how much good you are doing but there are nights where it really does feel like you are making a difference. Hope tonight is one of those nights for you.

Good luck

Tutter · 06/04/2008 21:18

ooh, where would you be expat? [kind of interested]

wannaBe · 06/04/2008 21:18

well you can get chloe handbags for £80

of course materialism comes into it. Unless the handbag has chloe stamped all over it most people wouldn't even know it was a chloe handbag, musc less be able to attach a price tage to it, unless they'd been eyeing up said handbags in the hope of one day being able to afford one?

I thought, that work like the Samaritans, was supposed to be quietly done, with no braying whatsoever. ???
