Love my rotary cheese grater - always hated grating cheese but this is a game changer.

Meat thermometer.

What kitchen gadgets do you actually rate?

Oh dear! Just ‘impulse ordered’ the Quopener. I also only have one wing Duck and it looks like it might be just what I need!

Now looking at mini choppers as I’ve frightened myself silly with the price of a Thermomix and a Sage coffee machine!

Do you also know about the culinaire magic one touch can opener?! It's an electric can opener that you just put on the top, press one button to turn it on, and it does the rest. You don't even need to line it up as it sorts that out by itself.

There are finger protectors/hand guards for grating food; they have a fork-like device to hold the item in place, and above that is a large grip (usually made of plastic). They are especially useful for mandoline slicers where it is very important not to come too close to the blades.
They cost a few pounds and might save having to buy a new machine.

Additionally they are useful for people who, due to illness or other reasons, can't easily bend their fingers.

I'll look into them-thank you. Amazing what you can get these days!

ForestAtTheSea · 03/06/2024 20:01

@Firefly1987 You're welcome - I am not sure they are that new, there's an old one from my grandparents lounging in a kitchen cupboard somewhere. I forgot its name and found these keywords on amazon. I remember I had strict instructions as a child to never slice small items or leftover pieces without it.
On a grater the possible injury is maybe not that extreme, just inconvenient, but on a mandoline it's more dangerous.

Not surprising they are not that well known anymore; I never see them pictured in any articles or magazines either.

I recently bought a Ninja AirFryer which I love, so quick and easy tto clean.

From reading this thread I have just bought the Sistema Rice Cooker and will try it out tonight.

Sistema rice cooker worked very well - thanks for the recommendations😁

For me, this is a very interesting thread, as I have a cookshop and we stock a lot of these items 😀

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 04/06/2024 08:00

Air fryer and moka pot - I spend a lot less in the local coffee shops since I got that.

A friend suggested shower caps for covering bowls & they work beautifully.

I might need to get a Quopener for my dad.

OMG my idea of heaven! (Second only to a stationery shop)

Joseph Joseph Helix Garlic Press

Mexican Elbow (lime/lemon squeezer) - use both of these every day

Four beautiful pottery spice jars that someone made for me - can keep cumin, garam masala, turmeric and ground coriander on the shelf next to the cooker as again, seem to need these every day. Could easily use a couple more for chilli and paprika. Not gadgets but better than scrambling around in the vast spice box.

Oxo salt and pepper grinders - last for ever

Knife sharpener

Glass kettle. Actually its a pain in the arse as the limescale builds quickly and it looks unsightly. But it means I descale it monthly, which, if I couldn't see it, I would not do. A friend recently had a water softner fitted which they describe as a game changer but I can't afford the cupboard space.

My Spice Tray as well...This is one off the internet...if I put search in for spice tray these come up but are then immediately hidden for some reason.

I've been wanting one of these for years! I must treat myself

They're not expensive but I've got AMAZING knives that I keep very sharp, a cleaver, a santoku and a paring knife.

2 heavy cast iron pans that can also go straight in the oven

My kitchen game changers (some gadgets, some basic equipment which made a difference / bring joy):

  • Having and being able to use a sharpening steel (and so having knives that are kept sharp)
  • Slow cooker, for meals when we were both working on site and having to drop kids into childcare early and collect late, also for making xmas puddings and homemade stocks
  • Cast iron frying pan and wok, properly seasoned and taken care of
  • An egg cooker which is set and forget, so I can continue with my morning routine, then return when I get beeped at to get my cooked eggs
  • Bread maker
  • V large saucepan / stock pot
  • Super huge enamelled cast iron casserole dish
  • A deep, in-mug / teapot tea infuser thingy that actually works well and is easy to empty and clean, plus good, loose leaf teas
  • Nevis range Dunoon mugs, for their generous capacity
  • Espresso machine with milk frother
  • A good bread knife
  • A 4 litre glass jar to store homemade muesli in

Popcorn maker - I’m not inclined to buy anything if I can manage with a pot or knife instead. But some gadgets come into their own with teenagers. Quick healthy snack in a minute, and always a hit on play dates.

I use a pyrex dish (because it has a lid) and the microwave.

Laruca · 06/06/2024 09:18

Thermomix - used almost daily for the last 8 years

Hello sorry only just saw this.

I bought mine from a big Chinese supermarket near where I live (wing yip near Croydon if you're in that area) and just chose them because I liked the handles and they are nicely balanced. I sharpen them often, they are little bit softer than ideal but that also makes sharpening easier.

Sorry that's not much help

My friend has a set of global knives that are very nice, the lady we flat sit for has a set of wusthoff knives and they are beautiful. My friend who is a chef in very high end restaurants says never overlook victorinox and that there's a reason butchers and professional kitchens are full of them. He doesn't use them though Grin

Meat thermometer. No more overcooked dry chicken

Also my OXO gravy jug that pours from the bottom.
The fat sits on top, so you're just pour the nice fresh gravy without all the fat.
